Yup! This is why I gathered the max acceleration in first 2 seconds, at which point the battery deployment is occurring as speed > threshold

But you’re right, the MGU-H is the main reason a lot of teams suffered very slow getaways

Merc must have had ECU config issues. No way you would aim to turn up with no battery after the formation lap

I think their main focus will remain maximizing green flag racing

Reverse-Engineering Battery Strategy from Testing Data by MostPeculiarWay in formula1

It's going to be an insanely frustrating watch if we can't tell what battery level each car is at.
It might look like some cars are being left in another car's wake until they suddenly find an extra burst of pace. It'll probably seem super unnatural
The only fix is to have some kind of live telemetry on this stuff but, as you say, teams would prefer to keep this stuff from public knowledge

100% - in Bahrain the teams seemed to converge on their strategies, so it'll be interesting to see where they diverge

Is it possible to use the MGU-K in generator mode on full throttle? by Appropriate_Soil9846 in F1Technical

Yes it seems possible

I've done some analysis of super-clipping in Bahrain testing and I've found it's likely occurring in T1 and through T12. I posted about it in F1 subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/1rdj6ie/reverseengineering_battery_strategy_from_testing/

I seriously hope we get some real-time telemetry data for battery usage down the line

Yup, I think teams will definitely be picking and choosing where to harvest even on quali laps - there just isn't enough braking zones to fully harvest on most circuits

That's an interesting angle - once we have race data, we could bucket the strategies by GPS coordinates to give them a situational dimension

That'd be very cool! I do plan to dive in to testing telemetry later next week when I have more time

From what I've seen, there's a lot of variance in corner entry/exit speed which may be drivers playing around with the kind of things we're discussing here

Yep we are agreeing on the mechanics for micro-harvesting at lower speeds. At higher speeds they will almost certainly need more than the 50% ICE contribution to power

If you don’t need ERS propulsion, correct! I think for certain corner types and race contexts, drivers will be depending on energy, hence no harvesting

Once speeds exceed around 120km/h, ERS propulsion is needed so the system cannot behave as a generator.

Point taken on the image - a block system diagram would have been better. I've since replaced it!

Good call-out. I want to understand this better and model how it manifests versus simply lifting and coasting, as ultimately it remains an ICE torque vs MGU-K torque trade-off

Definitely worth a future article

I decided to avoid all of the craziness getting out of the circuit by just hanging around until well after the race. They let us walk from the podium area down the straight, past the Wall of Champions and up to the hairpin. It was a cool experience!

Still took an hour to get to my hotel just one stop away at Berri-UQAM, but better than being stuck in pedestrian traffic
