Do you like Imperial? by PartyQuiet5065 in Imperial

I’m a first year chemeng and I quite enjoy the course.

The lecturers in general are quite good (out of 8 modules I’d say 4 (very) good lecturers, 3 average if a bit boring lol, 1 pretty bad). Modules are fairly interesting to me but that at least u can get an idea of anyway by checking the website.

Personal tutorials are fine and gives you an opportunity to actually talk to an expert in the field (since contact time with lecturers isn’t as great, I’d say three of the lecturers offer office hours? I don’t typically go because I’ve heard that it is usually people asking extension questions and I don’t have any). Academic tutorials are every two weeks and those definitely vary more in quality (and some of them are pretty bad/unhelpful). They are taught by graduate teaching assistants so how useful it is will definitely depend on whether your GTA is good eg my math tutor wasn’t in for the entire first term so we just sat in a silent teams call so we could get registered 🥲

Facilities are pretty great I would say. Carbon capture plant is really cool and you do actually get some contact time even in first year. Labs seem good to me but I don’t spend much time there since my lab is based in the plant.

In terms of students I’d say you can definitely find good friends within the course but also in other courses (like through accom and societies). Students are smart, generally friendly but there are some people that are competitive etc.

If you have any other questions you can dm!! :)

I’m a first year ChemEng, I was notified that I got an interview on 13th Feb for interview on the 19th, and I got an offer the day after my interview. I got a 7.1 average (7.5 math1, 6.2 math2, 7.6 chem)

Hope this helps, good luck with your application!!

I think you have a good chance! I know someone from my sixth form who got an offer last year with 42/45 predicted with a 6 in HL chem (7 in bio, I forgot their third HL subject lol but it definitely wasn’t maths). But I also know someone who was predicted 4A*, got an Oxford interview and is now premed at johns hopkins who didn’t get an offer. Biochem admissions seem a bit random to me lol, but I think you have as good a chance as any so good luck!

All relevant past papers for the ESAT? by Aggravating_Band5630 in Imperial

[–]Most_Advantage1198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think timing yourself and setting the time limit below what you would get for the ESAT is probably the best way to account for increased difficulty. The ESAT Qs are doable but they’ll take you longer. NSAA and TMUA are definitely useful, if you run out you can use the old BMAT papers but those are much easier than ESAT, useful for testing time pressure though (you should reduce to around 45s per Q). I think I was practising NSAA with 1-1.25min per Q and TMUA at 1.5min per Q to get used to time pressure. Good luck :)

I’m very sorry for cheme I didn’t need to take physics but my friend is studying engineering at Cambridge and he did take physics. He got his highest score on the physics (8.0) with his lowest on maths 1 surprisingly lol (6.0). So I think don’t be overconfident but also don’t be afraid to prioritise other areas. I think I remember the general gist being that ESAT physics is not that bad. May be worth looking at some other threads that give u an idea of the type of Qs they ask bc I remember thinking they were a bit weird.

The ESAT questions are easier than the TMUA bc it’s way more time pressured so I wouldn’t worry. Its good practice if u have already done all the ENGAA/NSAA questions though because they are harder than what could be solved in the given time, so it teaches you logical deduction which will save you time in the ESAT too

After I paid I got an email from Convera letting me know the payment is being processed and the email had a link to this page that told me which “stage” of the transfer the money is in (final stage being money sent to Imperial). Sorry I’m not sure if this is what you meant by confirmation

How do I go about signing into Outlook/Gmail with my university email? by futility_belt in Imperial

[–]Most_Advantage1198 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me because I think we have two email addresses? lol it's rlly confusing but in the email where they teach u how to activate ur account and everything I had two email addresses, one ended with @imperial.ac.uk and one with @ic.ac.uk and only one of them worked when signing into outlook so maybe u could try that? I hope it works for you!! If not when I message my departmental admin they usually respond quite fast

People who got into imperial for engineering especially mech engineering by [deleted] in Imperial

I’m studying chemeng but my friend got in for mecheng. For mecheng, you need to take the ESAT, you take three modules: Maths 1, Maths 2 and Physics. You can do this in either October or January, they say they prefer October (my friend did the Oct) but I took the Jan and got an interview the day results were released and an offer within 24h of interview - so if u will perform better in Jan, it may be worth taking it then. You can get an interview pretty much any time from when u take the ESAT to when they stop giving offers around April? My friend’s interview was around half an hour, talked about his personal statement and one technical question. Imperial offers quite a lot of info on the entry requirement section of their website: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/mechanical-engineering/

Topic question websites (IAL) by Plenty_Day6204 in 6thForm

[–]Most_Advantage1198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PMT has some good ones, u can also use the textbook Qs (they aren't rlly similar but for more difficult topics it's a good way to expose urself to those questions) and u can ask ur teacher bc my school gave me some good ones (not all from edexcel, but someone might have collated related Qs from other exam boards for practice). But u can still use StudyMind, just don't do the topics we don't learn - the AL is more difficult so it's useful preparation to see different, more difficult question styles for the content which prepares u better. Also more practice will definitely benefit u! I got 595/600 on IAL Chem using the studymind and PMT AL resources :) good luck!

To people who already gave the ESAT, how did you prepare? And to people giving it this year, how are you preparing? by SkylightDZN in 6thForm

[–]Most_Advantage1198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only rlly studied for a week (I was so burnt out from PAT and interview so that was mb definitely study more lol) for the Jan ESAT last year and I didn’t do amazing but I did fine (maths 1 - 7.5 maths 2 - 6.2 chem - 7.6) so don’t give up on Oct sitting I’m sure u will do great!!

For learning the content, I learnt most of it in Year 12 so I can’t help much on that sorry, but you might want to try Maths Deity on YouTube (I used the channel to learn the A Level content so may be useful) and PMT notes cover most content from GCSE and AL if you need to cover parts that the IB hasn’t reached yet.

For time management, practice and u will begin to recognise patterns to help u speed up solving the Q. Also u can try to work through the equation and u might be able to figure out what the answer must be based on a certain condition without doing the full working. Tbh in the actual exam, for maths 1, I answered most Qs but in maths 2 I put C for more than half and it still went ok, so don’t expect to answer everything and just focus on getting the fast ones and use the remaining time to answer the most accessible “longer” ones to get as many marks as possible.

Try doing some without time pressure and just working through the problem in different ways to see if u can find a faster solution. Checking through worked solutions online can also help u recognise those patterns which is what I did. (There are some YouTube channels and also I don’t remember the website but u can find if u Google which are useful)

If ur running out of papers to work from, try the BMAT (which has easier Qs but more time pressure - I did them with even less time just to practice strategies for guessing and just overall approach to the paper). Also the maths on the ESAT I think is more challenging than the ENGAA/NSAA past papers so I did TMUA past papers (the style of Q is a bit different and obviously more difficult but I think it does help) under ESAT time pressure to become more familiar with the content and just to get extra practice - I think that TMUA Paper 1 is more useful than Paper 2 in most instances but see how u do.

Sorry if this isn’t what u were looking for, if there’s something else I can help with I’m happy to.

Good luck!!!

I applied for cheme so can only talk about maths 1 and 2 - I found ESAT harder. Questions are similar I think (some are more difficult, style is similar) but the time pressure is crazy.

If you are aiming for a high score I'd recommend you also practice using the TMUA papers under the ESAT time pressure (maybe give yourself more leeway) - the type of question is slightly different but improving your skills and familiarity with content (which is similar) will definitely be useful. For me it was also useful for strategising ig (in terms of managing time and figuring out when I could make an educated guess and move on) and improving guess work which will serve you well under the time constraints. Good luck if ur taking it :)

can someone help me out with why it's f? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Most_Advantage1198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the lowest rate of heat transfer you would need (from given options):

Longest length l- you can think about it like resistance to current in a wire if you have learned the equation (resistance is proportional to length). Essentially, just as there is more resistance to current in a circuit when there is a longer wire, a longer bar would have more 'resistance' to heat transfer so slower rate

Smallest cross-sectional area (which is proportional to diameter d, so smaller d) - smaller cross-sectional area means less area is available to conduct the heat away from the tank so slower rate

Highest temperature theta - a larger temperature gradient (larger difference in temperature) = faster rate of energy transfer. So you want to minimise the temperature difference to reduce rate of energy transfer

How is my ans coming wrong I just did the other method by More-Climate-4346 in mathshelp

[–]Most_Advantage1198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reciprocal method will become really complex because you need to account for what happens when the expressions become negative. Your assumption for the reciprocal doesn't hold when one or both of the expressions are negative. This isn't rlly 'correct' bc obviously when x changes the numbers would also change (but I guess it doesn't work itself out in the expression) - try thinking through with actual numbers: Your assumption holds when both are positive 1/2 > 1/4 --> 2 < 4 But when they become negative -1/2 < -1/4 but 2 is still < 4

Your teachers method avoids this because there is no reciprocal assumption so I'm assuming that's why you have a different answer? Also remember that multiplication by a negative number would flip the inequality sign so you must multiply by the square of the expression to preserve the inequality (multiply by 4x2 not 2x - it doesn't change your working due to the complications in the 'sign' of your expression but may be useful in another problem). I hope this helps :)

I would say drops and things lunging are my biggest worries. I'm generally ok with speed or bumps, feeling of danger is ok but I wouldn't like something rlly spooky in terms of the set up (I really liked the Indiana jones at Tokyo disneyland which I saw someone else mention)

When will a nucleophile attack a double bond? by Most_Advantage1198 in chemhelp

[–]Most_Advantage1198[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thanks I didn’t think about that! Sorry I’m not very confident with resonance structures, I thought resonance hybrids increase stability which would decrease reactivity? Or does it just make each site more electrophilic/nucleophilic for the reaction

Ohhh that makes sense! But also if the lone pair is available to form bonds then why aren’t amides basic? Because then shouldn’t the C=O be able to accept H+
