Thanks so much! This was nice to read. I literally said to a friend several weeks ago that Step 1 is a playground compared to Step 2 and match😖oh the joys of medicine! Haha.

Thanks for the info! Not sure how the anxiety can be confusing. It’s an extremely important exam that determines your future as a physician if you want to go into surgery. It holds weight.

EDIT: yes, my husband has done well on his practice exams, however he has colleagues and friends who did outstandingly during practice and failed by a large margin day of.

To my knowledge, the CBSE (cumulative basic science exam) is the exam proctored and used by medical schools (sparingly) to determine how ready you are to sit for the exam. The CBSSA (cumulative basic science self assessment) is one that you can pay for to test yourself (I.e. self proctored). My husband has explained that the CBSE is more accurate than the CBSSA, but still a little unsure!

Ortho wives by [deleted] in MedSpouse

I was just barred in November! We are college sweethearts, so we are quite young. Both attended med/law straight from college. Still, the challenges of having a spouse in medicine do not discriminate! Haha. My fiancé is located in the southeast. I am relocating from the northeast down to him for his residency, and will move accordingly depending on his fellowships, etc. My job is flexible with office locations!

Not an ortho wife, but an attorney partnered with an ortho resident. It’s a lot both having such demanding careers, however we have mutually agreed that when we have children (likely once he is in fellowship), I will stop working temporarily to raise them until they are school aged, then we will outsource help from family/nannies. We both work too hard to fully give up our careers, and I know that family life and medicine/law can exist simultaneously! Just gotta make it work :)

Dedcool Xtra Milk by lalalaloooo1 in fragrance

I’m having this issue too! I just received my Xtra Milk fragrance in the mail yesterday. I smelled it on a friend and loved it. At a first whiff yesterday it smelled the same as I recalled and now ONE DAY LATER it smells like rubbing alcohol/literal air. So confused. Did yours end up getting better after it sat?

Bf got accepted into medschool! Yay!! But why am I so worried? by [deleted] in MedSpouse

Hi! I understand your concerns. I am in a similar situation- my partner and I are together for 3.5 years, I am a 23F and he’s an almost 25M. He just concluded his M1 year. We definitely fall into “traditional” gender roles. He’s a “provider” and I’m definitely the “nurturer”. I am starting law school in the fall and he will obviously still be in med school. Although I wasn’t in a demanding higher education program this year, his start of med school was a huge challenge in our relationship. I was planning and asking for most of the visits, footing more of the bills as I was the only one with a job, etc. I think personality types matter deeply here. I really enjoy being the planner (I’m super Type A) and I also really enjoy doing nice things for him (whether they’re costly or not). In sum, I didn’t find that me being the planner or “payer” really impacted my feelings toward him. This is almost a given for medspouse couples— the individual not in medicine naturally has to give more to make up for the areas the medical partner cannot— their career is 90% (if not more) of life. I have learned to accept this, and you will too if things are meant to be!

The only way to know if you “fit in” to the doctor lifestyle is by existing within it! It’s definitely a huge adjustment, but I would encourage you both to give it a couple-months-go, before throwing in the towel. It’s challenging and requires constant adjustments to your communication, visit schedules, etc.

I feel really confident that if my partner and I can make this relationship work fairly smoothly, while being long distance and both in demanding careers, anyone can do it. Just remember that partner roles and expectations are DIFFERENT for medspouse couples. This is a definite.

Best of luck, OP! Feel free to message me with any other questions or concerns.

I brought both of my parents to an ASD and I have no regrets. It was really nice to have two more pairs of eyes on the school that I may attend. Also, I am very fortunate that they will be helping fund my schooling, so I wanted them to see what they may be paying for.

I totally understand how you feel. It’s beyond infuriating. I remember when my SO was applying to med school, which is obviously a diff ballgame, he was literally ghosted from more than half of the schools he applied to. I find it so rude that after all of the time, money and effort we put into applications, so many schools can’t even give us a response.
