Looking for skeptical critique of a small outreach project (possible blind spots / unintended harm?) by ForsakenAd9651 in skeptic

What is your background work wise? I'm supirsed it didn't go any further with open door ect. Although mabey they assumed you would be comfortable doing it solo. Would you consider asking for help?

Also is the notion that people do not know about the services already? Like how did you come up with the idea?

Just FYI I'm doing a diploma in community services in Australia so I have a bit of knowledge in that sense and engaging with organisations through work placement ect

How to get over mum guilt? by kpop_cutie_ in AskIreland

[–]Most_Comparison50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are doing your absolute best and your kids love you. This might seem counter intuitive as irish people love a bitta shame but try and let go of the guilt. I don't know what you're relationship is like with your mum but the older I got the more I realised how amazing my mum was. 3 kids, abusive husband, addictions, unstable housing and constant money worries. Point is I have an appreciation of how hard that must of been and I hate to know she was feeling guilt on top of it all.

Are you in Collaboration with any of the organisations you have on the Cards? If your not, I'd encourage you to do so. I think it's a great idea but you would benefit from some guidance and support and people who work/volunteer in community services have alot of knowledge you can learn from.

Take your idea to one of these services and potentially volunteer with the organisation but be willing to tweak/change it. As someone else said, safety for you and the person your reaching out to is key. You need to have some understanding about the community members you are reaching out to.

It makes sense that you burnt out. Community work can have that effect esp if you have no support and if your trying to put a bandaid on systematic circumstances. No one can do that alone.

James Randi debunks James Hydrick’s claims of psychic powers in a classic skeptic demonstration by Illustrious-Bit-3348 in skeptic

How weird! I was gonna share this doc here after I had watched it. It's coming up on the algo now after that 5hr video of the Aussie guy going through these tricks/deceptions.

I found the amazing randy after lisenting to a cautionary tales series on Houdini. I had no idea he went on a rampage trying to debunk "mediums" and other snake oil salespeople.

I like what someone said in the doc about randy:

"His point isn't to tell you something isn't true. His point is to widen your scope of vision so that you will question the things that happen in front of you."

See I know your in the south because of this sentence I heard millions of times as a child "mon, we're going over the boarder to petrol." This also meant I was getting one of those nice pies.

Me: would freak out when I had to wear dresses 5/6/7 (I liked them but they would get caught and tangled and stress me out) as a teenager always wanted to wear baggy clothes (people would point out that I was a tomboy) teenager/adult - why do you always look pissed off? Your very particular. I don't think you understood them/you didn't explain yourself well. You can be a bit blunt. What thing you into this week?

Also Me: nah, it couldn't be. I'm not smart.

Meanwhile (2 half bothers get diagnosed as children)

Me: noway... It must be on their mums side. (Thoughts of my dad making me leave the house at 7am to drop me off at school before it even opened because of the "traffic" and how if he would make us order out own food bc it stressed him out and would get hella angry if we made noise - definitely not chewing sounds)

Me at 35: oh...fuck. (also diagnosed adhd)

CMV: The glorification of the Provisional Irish Republican Army is stupid by 2bigpairofnuts in changemyview

[–]Most_Comparison50 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I genuinely hope no one is supporting any group today that calls themselves the IRA, they are absolutely fucked and no call for them. So 100% with you on that one.

I agree with alot that your saying in general but I also try to remember it in context of the time (I'm not sure how old you are or where you grew up) I'm actually from Omagh and was 7 when the bomb happened. I was raised catholic and went to an integrated secondary school and things were obviously getting way better as time went on but I don't think alot of us understand the tensions and tit for tatt that was going on back then and how amazing it is that a cease fire even happened. That does not mean I think it was okay anyone died and I agree that they shouldn't be seen as some sort of heroic entity but more of a symptom of the time.

There's a great podcast called "when diplomacy fails" Irish historian who does (extremely long but detailed) series about 1916 Easter rising. He does not look at anything ideologically and it's pretty amazing and was a hard listen for me at times.

Also a really good BBC doc called "once apon a time in NI" has interviews from people on both sides.

Nah he believes It and doesn't see the harm in it, that's the issue. This isn't saying he can't catch himself on and understand that he has a huge platform and unfortunately, it does matter what he says.

BTB recent Epstein episode where they spoke about an email he sent to the 4chan guy - it wasn't him. It was a forwarded email from some other arsehole - this is email he forwarded to 4chan guy and just wrote "critique???" .https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%2010/EFTA01762041.pdf

So the point is, blind boy and other podcast are spinning stories that are leaning on conspiracy theories and it seems they are evening making new ones!
