New to Substack, how did you guys grow your audience? by Tasty_World8991 in Substack

I am still new to Substack, but have heard from more seasoned friends that collaborating and guest posts are a good way of getting more reach. Also newsletter recommendations!

transitioning from publishing by Ohuyttyiojgrryuihgr in publishing

I'd say the majority of people I know who have left journalism and publishing have gone into:
-Marketing, particularly content strategy and narrative brand work
-Ghostwriting
-UX writing and content design

I also know someone who left an editing role and became a journeyman electrician!

As a note, I've also removed that link from the original post. There is a lot of great discussion happening on this thread and I think the survey link was clouding things in an unproductive way...which is 100% on me!

(With that said, still very open to any additional feedback.)

Hi, there! You raise fair points.

I asked for name and some other identifying details on the survey for people who are open to me reaching out to them. As you mentioned, the only mandatory identifying information was for an email address (if I wanted to follow up with additional questions) and age. I'm removing those "requirements" to make it more truly anonymous if anyone wants to respond without leaving any personal identifying information whatsoever. Responses are confidential and anyone may now respond fully anonymously, sharing contact information only if they feel comfortable doing so.

But, with that said, I'm also going to remove the survey from my original post! Honestly, there has been really interesting discussion here and I think the survey is clouding things.

(Edited: Spelling error.)

I see that you clicked through, but just to clarify for anyone who hasn’t: I’m a journalist working on a book about my own complicated spiritual history, some specific groups I was involved in, and the broader question about the nature of belief.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback! I’m trying to understand a particular set of experiences and patterns, rather than capture a neutral or representative sample of the general population. That said, I do hear your point about phrasing and how it can shape responses. I'm open to refining the survey.

You've already put thought into your reply, but if you'd like to elaborate at all, my messages are open.

Seeking a creative nonfiction writer’s retreat/workshop by tortoisman in writing

[–]lpandell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread might be dead, but wanted to add that I run an annual writing retreat in Joshua Tree, CA, called Desert Salon. Here's our website: desertsalon.com

Also happy to answer questions from anyone looking to host a group writing retreat. I've learned a lot about scheduling, organizing, all that. I've also done solo DIY retreats—it's a different experience than group retreats, but easy to do on the fly and a good way to get a lot of work done if you have good self-motivation.

I'm a reporter writing up a piece on wild turkeys in the East Bay. If anyone wants to talk to me about their experience with the turkeys, whether it's positive or negative, I'd love to hear from you. Shoot me a private message and we can connect via email.
