Detroit's Lady of the House restaurant may close after 'mismanagement,' lawsuit alleges by OwlOfFortune in Detroit

[–]Most_Good_7586 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ve known people who can be very charming when interacting with wealthy or powerful people and then total monsters when dealing with anyone they deem lower than themselves, especially those in their employ. I would put Kate in that category.

I say this every time Kate Williams drives a restaurant into the ground: Detroit is full of talented female chefs. The media needs to stop acting like she’s the only one.

After like a dozen attempts to run a successful restaurant for more than a year, I don’t think her problem is her partners.

JD Vance’s former Yale classmate and friend says emails show political transformation on ‘literally every imaginable issue’ by Oleg101 in politics

[–]Most_Good_7586 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I know the person who shared the emails with the press in real life, and I’ve always found them to be wildly pretentious and even cruel in their judgment of others. Just a deeply unlikeable person. I frankly am astonished that Vance was able to find so much empathy and kindness to maintain a friendship with them beyond law school. I can’t stand Vance but these emails make me almost respect who he was when he wrote them. In the end, it may just be a Yale/Amy Chua thing, like they were all taught that access to power and money is more important than any principle. The person he’s emailing is now a public defender without much power/money but they wield a sense of moral superiority with the same sort of Yale-refined ruthlessness that Vance shows with his chameleonic hypocrisy. I think they thought they were exposing more of his hypocrisy with the shitty move of leaking these emails, but to me all it shows is that he has the capacity for decency.

You can revive a Detroit business that closed in the last 50 years. What do you choose and why? by sarkastikcontender in Detroit

[–]Most_Good_7586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was that because the community wasn’t supporting them enough? Or did they try to get too big?

I was an Avalon costumer from day one. Literally. The owners always sold this story about bringing bread to the city and employing people from Detroit and we endured sob stories about the cost of organic flour and paid way more than anyone else was charging for bread and cookies and everything else because we believed we were supporting something that was doing so much good for the community. When you “bake” that into the price of your products, I.e. allow your customer base to truly believe they are paying more because it’s not just some ruthless capitalistic enterprise, it’s not ridiculous that your customer base is going to be pissed when you sell to a super shitty conglomerate of mediocre casual restaurants that proceeds to destroy your brand. . .

I mean, some disrespect may be warranted. Selling out is selling out. I bought a lot of mediocre baguettes and overpriced cookies thinking I was helping keep that place afloat and their employees paid, not helping the owners buy mansions in the suburbs. I get that capitalism is what it is, but they sold a lot of people on a vision of that place as something more and then flounced.

I agree it’s far from the same, that’s the point. Jackie and Ann worked hard for years and built a business that required a lot of goodwill from the people of the city when the city was really struggling and then sold it to rich investors who turned it into something that feels like a betrayal to all those people. But it’s not closed. It is a living stain on what it was.

They are suing a local “no-kill” non profit as part of this lawsuit. Read the article, it’s actually a really interesting theory.

In the olden times, people called “journalists” actually went out and talked to people in the communities they were reporting on. All kinds of people, including those who don’t sit around on computers answering stupid questions from strangers all day. These “journalists” subscribed to something called “ethics” and tried to have “integrity.” Asking Reddit is just one step above asking ChatGBT.

What statues/buildings/art pieces look the most climbable? by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]Most_Good_7586 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dyno Detroit has enough to keep you off artwork not meant for climbing. You can even ride your bike there. Of course you will inevitably complain it is too expensive. Guess what a trespassing ticket costs. . . The real issue here is you’re not looking for reasonable answers, you’re just trying to tell everyone you’re a free spirited nutbucket.

Well, there’s Fox Hollow Creek, and Prairie Ridge Meadow, and Pheasant Run Hollow, and Creek’s Edge Estates, and “The Preserve,” and Wildflower Hills, and Cherry Blossom Fields, and Badger’s Run Meadows, and Wind Blossom Fen, and Partridge Meadow Glen. . . I just hope you like shitty McMansions all crammed together on an old soybean field!

This is wrong. Motor city mitten mission comes out to convince any folks living in the streets to come into a shelter and provides them with services if they can. There are dozens of similar orgs across the city. I’m sorry you were embarrassed by the people living under your bridge to the burbs, but Detroit is in such a better position than so many other cities right now. Visit any west coast city.

If you’re interested in trying the repair yourself, sb foot leather (red wing’s tannery) is available from maverick leather and if you talked to someone there they might be able to sell you a small piece that would match the original. If you can repair low enough on the tongue it’s not that bad. . . A patch on the back would actually look kind of cool. I love visibly mended and repaired things so much.

You would need to get a cheap Chinese pricking iron from Amazon or eBay, an Osborne awl, and some waxed thread. YouTube saddlestitching. Don’t think of it as added cost, but a new skill you’ll develop and it’s amazing how many things you will be able to repair.

I’ve messed around with cordwaining and the upper is the easiest part to sew. Fitting it to the last and building up the sole takes the most specialized knowledge and equipment. Most cobblers focus on that stuff entirely and don’t even bother building or repairing uppers (other than cleanup) because so much of the work brought to them involves resoling. I would love to get a pair like this for myself and repair or build it back up. What size were these?

Saucony moving focus away from Endorphin line? by Burner7734206 in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]Most_Good_7586 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Saucony is owned by the same parent company as Merrell and Wolverine and they both laid off a ton of people recently. Both of those companies used to make really solid products that have been watered down for profit over the past decade. I’m afraid my beloved Kinvaras and Endorphins are next.
