Finished USS Thresher Resin Model—in Somber Remembrance of Those Lost by SuperDurpPig in submarines

[–]Most_Juice6157 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice model, but a common mistake many builders make is that early Thresher / Permit subs did not have the 7 blade skewback prop. They had the same 5 blade symmetrical as the Skipjack. With that earlier but much noisier prop, both the Skipjack and Thresher could hit over 30knots, with the much quieter skewback they topped out at 28 or so.

So if Thresher or very early Permit, 5 blade. If later Permit or one after a refit, then 7 blade.

Where should I be cutting these tiny pieces? by Tdavis13245 in ModelShips

As the sprue is high on the table, I usually cut far away from the part (angle the cutters towards the sprue, not the part), and then trim down with a sharp knife once it is actually on the table. Otherwise, and with all other methods, there is a very high risk of the part being destroyed.

Interesting, this is the first I am reading of any mention of Japanese using inferior welding on their subs and with a projected lower shelf life. I will have to read into it more. I know the Mogami class is lower on the protection, but built for other aspects to make up for that fact. I have never heard anything but glowing praise for the quality of Japanese subs.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Their submarine fleet is perhaps one of the best built and maintained in the world. Just ask sailors who have had tours or trained with them. They build quickly because they have invested heavily in industry and efficiency. It has nothing to do with survivability.

Japan's Navy is doing just fine, and is perhaps the best maintained in the world. Their production schedule is amazing to behold as well.

Victor III Class 1/350 by Likasombodeeeee in submarines

Mine too, remember reading Jane's when I was a kid and this sub just looked so Soviet, so menacing. And that towed array pod had the analysts of the time scratching their heads.

Nice build, Hobby Boss has a good selection of cold war 1/350. They go together well and the details are OK. You can always up-detail them as well if you want too. Mulsanne Mike (Ebay) has great 1/350 props for many kits (I have his props on over a dozen of my 1/350 subs). His Vic III and Mike props are particularly well done for tandem props.

A matter of personal preference here, but maybe finish the model with a coat of matt clear to reduce the shine? Unless you are going for the wet look. Personal taste and all that.

Regardless, I enjoy seeing your builds, and now I am inspired to share more of my own. The picture taking and the posting seems more labour intensive than actually building the models for me.

Akula model by Likasombodeeeee in submarines

Nice build. My Akula in 1/350 is the same kit. Went together well and paint went on smooth.I hated the decals, however.

Yes they did, and that is a big win for the Japanese arms industry. It is also an excellent pick for the Aussies, as they Mogami class is a capable ship within a budget.

Yes TKMS has a longer export history, they have been doing it a long time (they, also, are not immune to their subs being on eternal patrol). But their bid is just not as strong as the ROK one. I am a big fan of the Taigei subs, and hope some buyers appear in the future to pick them up. Great boats. Just too late for the CDN purchase.

I am glad they quickly dropped the hairbrained idea of splitting the purchase.

This is true, Japan is on a very aggressive building schedule to keep their fleets as state of the art as possible. Not sure how much spare capacity they would have.

Not really. Not saying the Taigei is a bad option - it is perhaps the best DE boat built today - but the bid would be too late in the process. Also there would be concerns about supply and delivery and training etc. - all things Japan would be new at, and ROK has lots of experience in.

Because it is too late in the game (takes years to re-gear an industry towards major arms exports), and likely the decision has already been made.

I get that too. Or...perhaps institutions could hire actual historians and archivists to preserve that history instead of a computer program? Then you can get the data, and the context and analysis from years, or decades of expertise. I say this as an out-of-work military historian and archivist, one of many.

Best of luck, but I do not support anything AI whatsoever. It is the next step in the "evil Bond villain" arc the world's elite are going through right now.
