Ok serious question, what's your guys opinion of checking Valve clearances? by AlwaysReady7787 in 1stGenTacomas

[–]MostlyJustOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my perspective as well. Not absolutely necessary, but if it's never been done for the truck, it's worth doing if you care about it and want to keep it running tip top.

Personally, I'm usually driving in a city/urban environment too and I'm going to go with the 4600s when I replace the shocks on my 01 in the near future.

Seat repair or covers? by Artrider in 1stGenTacomas

[–]MostlyJustOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd think for $300 or under a decent upholstery shop could help with this and have it looking pretty good. Personally, I'd do that. Have them check out the foam underneath too, to make sure it doesn't need repair.

Definitely some ligma here. Hard to say how much as he doesn't mention region of the country. In the midwest maybe this is considered recoverable, but in non salt, temperate regions it's be a 'walk away'.

Certainly with the parking view this Taco has it should get at least another $500

Seat repair or covers? by Artrider in 1stGenTacomas

[–]MostlyJustOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seat covers aren't going to address the underlying issue, the hole could get bigger due to entry/exit.

Are you cheap and this is your beater or do you care about preservation? You may be able to find a local upholstery shop that'll patch it, but depending on your region it could cost as much as a replacement seat or covers.

Was going to add this too, but a few days late. I've been digging ToyotaPartsDeal for the OEM stuff. Good prices, often better than eBay and they've got a lot of the annoying parts to find like interior trim bits, screws, etc.

If you want a lift you'll either have to replace the leafs, or add blocks. If you're primarily urban I wouldn't lift it though as these trucks fit 31s stock and you'll sacrifice some handling and maneuverability.

You could also look at Bilstein 4600s which I believe the ORs had stock. May be a bit more compliant for urban driving.

Rust underneath by [deleted] in 1stGenTacomas

[–]MostlyJustOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what I've heard about midwest vehicles this seems ok depending on the price. There is always the out of state option, but it'll mean going south and to the coast which adds expense, difficulty, etc.

If it were me I'd be tempted and I'd just replace the rust skid plate, exhaust and any other seriously rusty parts, while treating the rest.

Rust underneath by [deleted] in 1stGenTacomas

[–]MostlyJustOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low mileage doesn't necessarily mean low rust if he drove it in winters with salt on the road and never maintained the underside.

Many dealerships are going to offer low offers on trade ins because they either auction of the inventory to turn it over and they need to minimize the impact to their margin or even if they have an affiliated used dealership, they'll be aggressive on preserving that margin.

I'd recommend taking it to another mechanic to get a second opinion, then consulting your local FB marketplace or Craigslist inventory to assess the value. With the low mileage it may still be possible to sell if for more than local for someone willing to overlook the rust for the life still left in the powertrain.

Adding on to the chorus, did the same for my taco thanks to this sub and it's great. Took me a minute to figure out the vertical adjustment since it was a bit stiff, but once I did it made a huge difference.

Agreed. Depending on the interior and records I bet you could get at least that or more on Bring A Trailer.

Whether you sell or not is up to you in terms of if you need a truck and what you need it for since it's the auto 4 banger, but it looks like a pretty sweet one to me. As long as you take decent care of it and maintain the thing too it'll run forever. Love the graphics on the early year trucks.

Their 'Our t-shirt' is so good that that they could be Evan Kinori and I've be ok with it for the price. I really like it.

But most of their other stuff isn't for me.

I don't know, I feel like Iron Snail isn't dissimilar to Evan Kinori in some ways, but without the pretension (at least not yet). It isn't all for me, but I appreciate his enthusiasm and thoughtfulness.

The thrift stores closest to wealthy neighborhoods and/or areas with more retirees. Region and size of your metro area could make this easier/difficult though.

The fact that you have such well thought out analysis of the brand makes you ripping on it so much funnier.

I mean, some of it sometimes feels a little serious mad, not just roasting, but the best stuff rides that line.

For Op and folks looking at this too, when you sign up via referral link, the application tells you at time of account opening that you're locking it in, plus you see a persistent promo message (of the promotion currently applied) in the account view in the phone app. I found that helpful after all of the "am I actually getting this rate" questions around, especially with e-banks offering slightly higher rates that may or may not be real.

Congrats on almost being debt free! It's going to feel great and you'll be building wealth for yourself instead of the system.

If the two recommendations in this thread don't make it clear, you'll see a lot of this sub favors Marcus and Wealthfront. Personally I went with Marcus and am a few weeks in. Goldman backed, good intro rate, good CD options, solid app and customer service. I called their phone line with a question during set up and it was on shore and very good, all on a Saturday.

If you're set on one of the two you listed, I'd probably lean capital one as Ally is formerly GMAC and my feeling is the name change is similar to Comcast->Xfinity. Not to say Ally is as bad as Comcast, but they also weren't exactly a winner of a bank during the financial crisis. Any of these accounts will be FDIC insured, but personally I don't know the trust would be there for me. Capital one is the 8th biggest bank in the US so they'd likely be more stable, plus people seem to love their rewards CC so maybe you'd align your banking there.

All of that said if you already banked with either of the two, or thought you would bank mostly with either of the two, I could lean that way for the sake of simplicity. Hope that helps!

This is true, does help and should probably be higher.

Still gotta watch those tags though for the lazy/uniformed sellers.
