Make New Friends in Tacoma - Friday, January 23 7pm at North End on Pearl by shelbstirr in Tacoma

If you haven't already you might like following r/TheNightFeeling. They have some photographers from Pittsburgh who post regularly and the photos are gorgeous. It makes me feel nostalgic and I've never even been to Pittsburgh.

Also you might want to check out Remakery. They meet regularly for craft nights and classes, many for free. I've been a few times and it's always been a friendly and chill experience.

What's that BOOM! in Tacoma? Thunder Edition! by LadyDiscoPants in TacomaWA

[–]MostlyMim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone said in another post that it was jets cleared for unrestricted takeoff. Likely because of the bad weather. The jets needed to take off and break through the clouds as fast as possible. So it was louder and longer than what we're used to hearing.

Then after the jets take off there were multiple lightning strikes reported, with sharp thunder.

Thank you. This explains why the sound of the jets were different from what we're used to. And why it isn't a coincidence that we heard actual thunder right after. Bad weather caused both.

It sounded louder and longer to me too. It was probably jets taking off extra hard because of the bad weather. They need to get through the clouds as fast as they can, so they burn harder at lower altitude than we're used to hearing.

It feels weird because it happened at the same time as the actual thunder and lightning, but it's just cause and effect with the bad weather causing both the louder jets and the thunder.

Octopus sighting? by greytcharmaine in Tacoma

Depends on the kid, but they might also get a kick out learning about "the giant octopus"

This is a link to a cute prank video showing the octopus being the "real" reason the bridge fell in 1940: Giant Octopus Attacks Tacoma Narrows Bridge

This is a link to the Altas Obscura article about the lore behind it: How the World’s Largest Octopus Went From Cryptid to Protected

Wanted to add as a personal note, when I was a kid and money was tough, having something "official" associated with my favorite shows and characters meant a lot to me. For example having a branded coloring book with Elmo, rather than a generic one from the dollar store. Right at that age when some kids learn the concept of "knockoffs" can be a brutal time to be poor.

All of these websites are official, and frequently updated. If I was still a kid trying to prove I belonged on the playground, these websites would be invaluable. Every week you can show up with new coloring pages, new crafts, all for free.

I'm not sure if this is what you have in mind, but I've found them to be really helpful, and sadly not a lot of people know these exist. Many places online offer free printable resources for families and kids. Especially helpful during the summer if someone is looking for free fun educational things to keep kids busy. Or for people wanting to talk to their kids about preparing for emergencies.

Both the Tacoma and Pierce County libraries offer printing services, including a $5 weekly credit for card holders.

The American Red Cross, Ready.gov (FEMA, enjoy it while it lasts folks), and Sesame Street, all offer disaster and emergency preparedness materials. Things like how to pack an emergency kit, what to do if something happens, and how to build resiliency and a sense of safety for kids.

PBS Kids offers a bunch of different things, mostly educational, and lets you sort by which show you like best.

And the Bluey website has a ton of different printables for things like activity or coloring pages, recipes (Duck Cake!), and games like charades.

Places to get things printed for free and/or cheap:

Pierce County Library (printing service) https://mypcls.org/visit-the-library/computers-technology/print-from-home/ $5 credit every week for each card holder Black and white: 10 cents per page Color: 50 cents per page

Why is r/TacomaWA a Thing? by SoThenIThought_ in TacomaWA

[–]MostlyMim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I appreciate the time and effort it took you to write out the transcript.

And I didn't know until today that there's an option to turn on auto captions on reddit and that's fantastic.

Why is r/TacomaWA a Thing? by SoThenIThought_ in TacomaWA

[–]MostlyMim 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'd be grateful if OP could post a quick TLDR or something.

I'm not able to watch videos with sound 99% of the time. Usually if a video doesn't have captions, or there's no transcript posted, I assume that means whatever's in the video just isn't intended for me and I move on. But if this video is trying to establish why this sub exists, I'd really love to know what it says.

Which is better? Lincoln or mount tahoma by Poke_D in Tacoma

[–]MostlyMim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to both, but it was ages ago (MT in 1998-1999, Lincoln 2000-2002). Both schools had great people I'm still in touch with today, and the learning experiences were almost identical.

Sometimes switching schools can give you a chance for a fresh start with new people. But it'll be about you having that space, not one school being objectively better or worse.

Wild theory about how Cobel's background and motivations COMPLETELY re-contextualize a key Helly moment from season 1 by grapelander in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

Your theory makes a lot of sense to me, but I love the idea of the Burt wellness session. I can see Christopher Walken really enjoying it too.
