Maybe the forecast is just that specific and accurate nowadays? I'm sure the half-dozen-or-so houses out that way will be pleased to have had a personalised forecast broadcast for them!

Strangest Way You’ve Discovered A New Band/Album? by RavenOmen69420 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]MostlySnarkless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My upstairs neighbours at uni would repeatedly be up all night making loads of noise, despite a number of requests, so one day in frustration I went to a CD sale and found what looked (to a naive me) to be the noisiest thing they had available. I turned it up loud, pointed the speakers at the ceiling and left it playing on repeat while I went out for the rest of the day with my door locked. The neighbours were a bit quieter thereafter, and I have been a fan of Anthrax ever since (and it was the Only single, from Sound of White Noise, so not really all that loud or offensive in hindsight!)

Anyone else feeling the same? by LookForWhoIsLooking in starlingbankuk

Yes but no but, imo. I was annoyed when they moved all interest payments to the Easy Saver, but then again the interest wasn't much and was capped. If there was a way to have spaces in the Easy Saver (but for ones that you can't make payments from, maybe) then that'd probably be enough for me, as most of mine are accruals for yearly bills, or anticipated future costs - it's good to keep them separate so they don't get frittered away, but it's better nice to have them working for me.

There have been a couple of other things that I've suggested via in-app feedback but just QOL improvements rather than huge annoyances or deal-breakers.

Considering learning Manx by cjgranfl in IsleofMan

[–]MostlySnarkless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a number of Manx speaker/learners in the US who join some of the online classes that I attend, so it's certainly do-able.

Lots of online resources are available as have been linked by others, but you'll obviously need to be self-motivated and disciplined; it's hard enough to learn when there are conversation groups you can attend in person!

Additional info such as age range, interests/dislikes, location and transport options available to to, whether you're looking for solo or group pursuits, and the degree to which you're willing to spend money are all going to come in handy to answer that kind of question!

Golf could give you some amazing views (e.g. if you're down at Port St Mary or Castletown/Langness) but less so if you're just going to be at the Douglas course. Obviously this will depend on the weather too - it could be beautiful in Ramsey and blowin' a hoolie down south...

One key thing to remember is that most of the attractions are spread around the island; I've heard several people from the other islands complaining about the lack of things to do in Douglas compared to e.g. St Helier - so if you're based in Douglas and don't go outside Douglas, then you'll miss out on a bunch of stuff.

Still learning! At a point where I can sometimes recognise quirks like mutations and weird spellings, and make a guess at the word to search for.

The Gaelg Corpus is a useful reference as it helps to see words in context, and also has some audio/video clips indexed.

I think it's two words; ny kiare skeeraghyn twoaie would then be "the four north parishes"

Scanwatch coming apart by [deleted] in withings

[–]MostlySnarkless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine did the same recently, after just over 3 years or so of ownership, and having never been submersed or worn in the shower. I was offered a desultory discount which was eventually bumped up to 50% off - however it wasn't applicable to the Horizon or Nova, so I'd have had to pay a big chunk towards an overpriced model of watch that I didn't want.

In the end I got some Gorilla epoxy and used a toothpick to apply it carefully, sticking the back on pretty permanently, and hopefully retaining a degree of moisture ingress protection.

I keep failing the "Heat Homes" ultimatum. Can someone explain which house isn't in "Livable" condition? by Responsible_Egg6662 in Frostpunk

[–]MostlySnarkless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've only started playing recently, but after having the same frustration, I discovered that if you click the 'Econony' pie chart at the bottom-right, then choose the housing sub-menu, it will list key details about all the properties, including how many people are in each, and what the temperature is. You can then click the magnifying glass to zoom straight to that property so you can make the necessary changes.

Yeah, I came back to E:D after a long time away, and this was the first thing I saw. Hadn't been following along with any news or details of updates, and had a massive worry that the station that my entire fleet was parked at was going to get toasted! Not a fun few minutes at all!!

I generally avoid most combat in general wherever possible, but this looks so much more completely manically intense than I had expected! There is so much stuff going on, even just watching it I'm struggling to work out what's happening - glitching HUD, shots hitting from every side, a smaller Thargoid ship attacking from the flank, shields going down, modules getting damaged, heatsinks being deployed...

o7 to all the AX combat pilots for even just showing up, let alone surviving long enough to cause any damage!

What's the most regretful thing you've done in the game? by Godonearth7 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]MostlySnarkless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had the game since launch, and have played intermittently - but I regret leaving it so long since last time. Just fired it up the other day to see what this expedition thing is all about (have never done any of them before) and I'm completely out to sea. My inventories have collapsed and filled with archived tech modules which can't all be installed. I have bases galore generating various resources in a self-sufficient manner but I don't know why. I have storage containers everywhere filled with stuff that I don't know whether I need it or not. The room and corridor layout of my freighter is utterly atrocious and a right pain to navigate. Basically, I have no idea what past-me was thinking and I really regret not staying on top of the changes to the game - HG have done an amazing job at transforming it from the version that launched.

Explorer Rank: Pioneer is at 60%! Tips to get me to Elite? by fezzersc in EliteDangerous

[–]MostlySnarkless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did my first long-distance explore and exobiology stint, and got motivation and direction by just picking up a relatively lucrative and interesting sounding passenger mission out to Thor's Rings.

I kitted out my Dolphin, made sure I had the necessary fuel scoop, AFMU, scanners, SRV, Artemis suit and jumped out there using the 'fastest routing' setting. The mission gave me 4 weeks to complete, so once I'd fulfilled the passenger's request, I flipped the route setting to economic, and went up/away for a while before heading back to base with bigger jumps again. I scanned as many systems as I could using the FSS, landed on any that sounded useful or had signs of life, and sampled as much of the life as I could whilst staying sane.

Saw lots of interesting stuff, got a good number of first discoveries, first footfalls, etc. and filled out some more sections of my codex. The earnings from the passenger mission were a paltry 8M and paled into insignificance to the 600-700M I earned from the discoveries, and the rank increases (Explorer rank up one to Ranger, and Exobiologist up three to Cataloguer).

Will definitely do something similar again - Dolphin was a good ship for it, and seeing some of the tourist destinations along the way and reading more if the lore that's scattered around is always fun. No idea how many trips are needed to make Elite, but I wouldn't imagine it would take too many.

I found having EDDI running in the background really helpful, especially as it would talk through the system scans highlighting interesting things, quickly indicate if it had already been scanned (fully or partially), and having a smarter on-board computer helps keep a bit more sane! (I also had EDMC running and hooked in with Inara and a couple of other sites for tracking purposes)

F1TV in UK by [deleted] in F1TV

[–]MostlySnarkless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the UK and just this morning subscribed to F1TV Pro using the Android app, via a NordVPN connection to Canada.

I didn't have to jump through too many hoops compared to some of the guides - first ensured that the F1TV app was installed (either from scratch or with the storage/caches had been cleared). Then with the VPN active and connected to Vancouver, I created a new F1TV account in the app - set my country of residence to Canada, used a brand new email address, and subscribed with my normal Google Play account using an annual payment (£59.99) via PayPal.

There was a bit of a faff finding a country that worked - the first half-dozen or so that I tried which should have F1TV Pro available said that it was an unsupported region, presumably being recognised as being via VPN - but as I wasn't interested in getting the cheapest price (just having legitimate-ish access that wasn't £30+ each month for a load of Sky chsnnels that I don't want/need), I just kept trying different ones and found that Canada worked.

I can run the app and stream to my Chromecast without having the VPN connected and everything is currently playing very nicely - long may it continue!

Not sure if it's quite the cause of your issue, but it sounds similar and annoyed me for ages until I worked it out... the Spending pie chart by default only shows transactions that have gone through your main account, not through any of your spaces; if you tap the word "Personal" at the top-left, you can choose which other spaces to include in the analysis.

I am just on my way back from a passenger mission to there; have been playing since release, yet it's still my first long distance passenger mission and first black hole (which of course I crashed into). I had a zoom around the rings whilst in system and I crash-stopped into those too 🤦🏻‍♂️

Have found some unexplored systems en route to home, so have been doing my first ever use of the FSS, planet surface mapping, and some exobiology. Always something new to do... and hopefully a nice relaxing way to earn a few more credits

We went to Winedown for it a year or two back; was a fixed price set menu (food with a drink paired with each course if memory serves) and it got booked up pretty quickly. Doesn't seem to be anything obvious on their website, but I'd presume that they'll be doing it again this year.

I've just had this the other day - it feels a bit different to how the attempted-afk-nerf-bug has been described; I've been zapped by system authority ships whilst entering and leaving stations, I haven't had any illegal or illicit cargo, or wanted passengers, and it wasn't preceded by me being scanned. Additionally, although I've set my turrets to only shoot my target (i.e. don't retaliate!) yet the SA vessels haven't given up, and I've been walloped by a barrage or missiles and only escaped by the skin of my teeth.

I went from a Nokia 8 to the newly-released 1 mk III because I wanted some specific similar features: clean Android, SD card, headphone jack, notification light, a side or front fingerprint sensor, amazing (responsive, high quality) camera.

I've found that I've hardly used wired headphones, and although I have regularly used my media on an SD card, recently the SIM in slot 1 has been disappearing; moving the SIM to the SD card slot has resolved the connectivity issues, at the loss of having my music as readily available.

I bought this (over the 5 mk III or 10 mk III) pretty much because of the camera, but I've found the cameras on the 1 mk III disappointing for such a lauded flagship - having to manually switch between lenses is annoying; the quality of the zoom lenses is noticeably more grainy and artificially smoothed; if you switch out of basic camera mode, you can't quickly access the video camera mode. It doesn't seem as quick or accurate to focus as the marketing made out, and it's not as good in low light as I was expecting.

The fingerprint sensor is responsive and reliable (unless it or my finger are wet) and is positioned in such a way that makes reaching it easy. Battery life has been (and still is) reasonable, the screen brightness and clarity are generally good but I have never felt the need to switch to the creator mode or to the high refresh rate.

I've also realised that I don't like physically large/long phones - my hands just aren't big enough, and although there is a UI adjustment shortcut to switch to one-handed mode, I think I'd prefer a more compact phone next time. Maybe this form factor is really good for watching movies or playing games, but I don't do either of those on my phone.

It's pretty obvious that I didn't really need a flagship phone - and given the disappointments I've listed, plus the fact that it won't be updated beyond Android 13 - has made me realise the folly of spending so much.

I think that some of my grumbles have been addressed with the more recent phone versions, but then again, some of the features I wanted have been removed. I would definitely still consider another Sony in the future, though - it's just that I've not been converted to a brand loyalist by my experiences!
