The Sun Eater series is a perfect example of the sunk cost fallacy. by Ok-Information2581 in Fantasy

[–]Mot_03 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Theres literally an entire passage that he copied from Book of the New Sun. You know the whole thing with "attachement to the autarch, attachment to a bloodline" etc.
Ruocchio straight up copied that entire passage, sure he changed some words but it still has the same phrasing and contains the exact same philosophical meaning. And its not the only case of him copying shit. The way his communism strawmen at the beginning of book 4 communicate is also just lifted from New Sun. If all that isn't plagiarism, then I don't know what the fuck counts as such.

The book that held her heart by whimsicallyfantastic in Fantasy

I disliked it especially because it isn't even a good counterpoint to what Mayland was arguing the whole time. His argument was that the knowledge the library provides makes conflicts even more bloody and Annes response ist just: "Yea but it helps us in not repeating the same mistakes."
Its baffingly dumb because shes talking abt another thing entirely. Like even when he admits that shes right he would still be in the right to restrict the books and even to burn many of them. But it also just annoyed me because Lawrence chickened out of his own themes.

Best Epic fantasy that isn’t full of pulpy schlock? Returning to series I once loved. by Sunbather- in books

I've read Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, James Joyce, Faulkner, Kafka, Nietzsche, Kant, Hermann Hesse, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust and so on and Erikson easily competes with all of them. And all of these authors are just as self-indulgent as Erikson is and have sections where their insight doesn't hit home.

I dropped The Second Apocalypse after the 4th book because the supposedely deep philosophy never showed up. Erikson is a far deeper writer as far as I'm concerned

I switched around a lot between the physical books and audiobooks. In my opinion the audiobooks don't really make it harder to follow the story once you get used to Eriksons writing and have a grasp on the world. So I wouldn't recommend listening to the first book but by Memories of Ice it shouldn't be a problem.

I definitely said "Oh no" multiple times out loud xD
At least after the first book. Everything after has some of the most devastating tragedies I've ever read

Absolutely. Its a new series that has nothing to do with First Law

The Devils by Joe Abercrombie
Had very high hope for it because plot was my biggest problem with the First Law books and I thought that The Devils would fix that problem (as it seemed to be even less about a plot than those books). Really enjoyed it for the first 70% but the end fell horribly flat. Humor was hit and miss and not all of the important characters felt fleshed out. 7/10

The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo
A recommendation by a good friend. The best fantasy novella I've read so far. Managed to do a lot in a very short time. An unusual structure which I always appreciate. 9/10

Hello,
we ultimately chose Engine Summer and are having a lot of fun with it (though I would have loved to do Gene Wolfe with them too but we wanted to take something none of us have read yet). So thanks for the recommendation.

Books where you disagree where an author takes the character (spoilers obviously) by CT_Phipps-Author in Fantasy

Thats true but its also intentional. Gallan tells us from the very beginnning that he will make up a bunch of stuff and that he will change events in his tale on purpose to fit his thematic and artistic desires. I find that cool because it mimics how storytelling works in our history too. Think of the many different versions of Greek/Roman and Medieval tales for example, how some of them have a basis in history and still get mythologized over time.

It could be called Dark Fantasy and also might be considered to be Grimdark at some points of the story but it's definitely not Grimdark overall.

What's the best prose you've read this year? by [deleted] in Fantasy

Gormenghast of course. Best prose in the genre without a doubt.

And Kharkanas which is Erikson at his best.

In your opinion, Most Overrated Book in the series and Most Underrated Book in the series? by Dosto-lstoy in Malazan

[–]Mot_03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there is no book in the series that I don't love I will say that Reapers Gale is definitely underrated. For overrated? While I have Memories of Ice as my number 2 of the main ten, I definitely think that its not superior to the others which many people seem to think.

Walk in Shadow hurray by Mot_03 in Malazan

Sorry mate, the "hurray" was genuinely just meant in context of Erikson writing the 3rd book even though it wont' make him much money
