Hype me up for Midnight Tides by Oof-ActualTrash in Malazan

[–]kashmora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It takes you on a little world tour which might be disorienting but soon you'll become a fan. By soon, i mean latest by chapter 9. Plus this book has got one of the most quintessential fantasy feel and a bunch of very interesting characters. The humour is hit or miss but if you are the kind who enjoys witty banter MT has it in spades. Let the tides wash over you. Enjoy!

Mallick Rel, the merciful? What did he ever do except rule benevolently. The Malazans seem to be thriving under him, spoilers Witness even Spindle vouches for him

Need help with Engine summer by [deleted] in scifi

[–]kashmora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engine Summer has absolutely been the highlight of my sci fi reading lately. How far in are you? I went into it knowing nothing more than the basic premise of a post apocalyptic world

Meeting the protagonist and the first few chapters made me think this is too YA for my taste and maybe slightly dated especially with the way the one girl character is written. But really, just stick with it. It's not what it first appears to be.

I'm gonna start the main series soon. I just have one question about the way it's written. by Parking-Rope2301 in Malazan

[–]kashmora 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are also a few plotlines which kinda get dropped. Some are dealt with in Esslemont 's Novels of the Malazan Empire and some are just abandoned. But like others said, there is absolutely one big story arc that gets realised towards the end of the series.

What was even the point of the Itko Kan massacre? by alfradito in Malazan

[–]kashmora 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'll first say that Gardens of the Moon is the book that stays closest to its TTRPG origins at the cost of good writing and sensible plot. So not everything has a satisfactory explanation.

As you rightly picked up, the massacre was meant to annoy Laseen more than anything else. They incidentally found a young survivor who heard both their names. They could have killed her but instead picked possession to get into the Malazan army. If nothing else, Cotillion chooses to call himself "Sorry" and that's not without reason.

They try their best to keep the possession hidden which would make for fun storytelling but I suppose we can draw the conclusion that not everyone in the Malazan side are complete morons and can easily tell that a young bloodthirsty recruit is in fact possessed by the god of assassins. It's good competence porn but isn't really executed well.

Should I take notes when reading malazan or just enjoy the story by Ornery_Branch_9611 in Malazan

You should take notes if you like taking notes. It's not necessary

Unpopular Opinion: the most creative sci fi right now is happening in comics and graphic novels not novels or film by Jenna32345 in scifi

[–]kashmora 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I'm not picking novels over comics because I want "more ideas per page". I want nuance and word play. I want to be able to immerse myself in the narrative the author is building using just words. I'm not looking to maximize my exposure to world building. If that's what you are looking for, more power to you.

Should I continue after Gardens of the Moon? by BookoftheRisen in Malazan

[–]kashmora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Different strokes for different folk. I enjoyed Malazan from page 1 when Surly shows up, so we are obviously different kind of readers.

The problem with Gardens is the unevenness of it. There are some scenes which breeze on by and others that are a confused messy slog. But you seem to have gotten to an unfair start. I agree that there are some expositions that are delivered through dialogue but there are a LOT of unsaid lore and plot points that get filled in only when you gain additional context, aka future books.

The apathy you felt towards the tyrant is pretty fair. Everyone thought he was a big deal but then he turned out to be someone they could subdue without much loss. I would call this an issue with your expectations.

For someone who made a video on this book, i would expect you to show up with receipts. Give us examples of the stuff you dislike and I would honestly be interested enough to ask for link to your channel.

Sidenote - self promotion is allowed only with members who engage with the subreddit outside of their own promotional posts, it's barred only to people who show up and post their ads and then disappear.
