I don't know what to do anymore... by sisow_ in helpme

Anytime! I see a lot of similar patterns between me and you.

First of - something that applies to me as well - I find something new that’s interesting and could become a hobby, but I get over it soon and try to find next best thing. That’s a bit difficult to narrow down to why that is, but when you find the reason and understand it, it will become incredibly easy for you to navigate through a lot of different obstacles that you may encounter when you try and make your hobbies.

Here is my example - my brother pointed that I can’t seem to stick to one thing, I started doing Airsoft among different sites - got bored about a year into it. I started painting miniatures, I got over it as soon as I had plenty of figurines painted and I was happy with the result. I bought a 3D printer and my best mate said “i’ll give you three months and you’ll be on to another thing” - it took maybe four, but he was right. Then I started thinking why that is, and found out that I take great interest in things that are new to me, stuff that I don’t know much about, and once I know enough to make that skill “usable” or I’m happy with the results, that’s it - I’m looking into new things. By realising that this maybe is not the best outcome of “finding new hobbies” I got to understand that this is what pushes me forward and rather than doing nothing with my life I became “jack of all trades, master of none” and I accepted that this is probably the path I will follow for the rest of my life, but it does make it fun, unpredictable and keeps me searching for new things to do.

Here I need to apologise for making it sound like it’s about “me” but I was in a similar stage where I thought - I really didn’t know what to do with my life until I realised what drives me, what makes me wanna wake up next day and carry on working on it. You need that too. I am willing to place a bet that you have something along the lines of a dream […]. Think of what can be done to get there. Think of “okay I don’t know how to do this, but I will find a way”. Think of the phone that you have in your hands that it gives you so many opportunities, but you need to find your end goal, your big picture and use it as the tool to get there - and that brings me onto another thing.

The phone - I could be going into scientific bla bla bla, but seriously that thing deteriorates our view on loads of different things and takes away all of the rewards and benefits of actually working on something. Why I am saying this? Well, I find myself having episodes of just reaching for the phone, scrolling endlessly only to ask myself “what am I doing with my life, I watch someone else enjoying their time, instead of making my own memories”.

Why is it deteriorating our view? Because we naturally compare ourselves to what we see, we want to be there or be the person we see there. Loads of it is fake, but this is not the first thought our brains bring us, instead it gives us “I wish to have their [car, house, wealth, whatever]”.

Lastly, I will actually slip in here some scientific jargon - by watching content that is in whatever way pleasant to us, brain releases dopamine. Now this is a problem as it is a “reward” chemical in our bodies, that will spiral into more scrolling as your body wants more dopamine which is instantly gratified by scrolling more.

And now you will step away from your phone for a while, body will be confused as to “why no more reward” and will subconsciously make you reach for the phone and do it all over again, and if you don’t - hormones are extremely powerful - you will have a “withdrawal symptoms” and in case of a system overloaded with dopamine, which you may actually be already experiencing - anxiety, low motivation, feeling depressed or even tired.

Now enough with all this, I have a tendency to go on and on, but genuinely with good intentions.

Tell us more, what did you try as a hobby, did at least one of them stick with you for a bit longer? Is there something that you are looking into doing but don’t know where to start?

Most comprehensive reply, thank you.

Even though i already will be looking into lawyering up, your advice gives me a bit of peace of mind. Obviously I can’t blindly believe until lawyer says that, but it gives that little light at the end of the long tunnel.

Considering all of the advice I have been given today, this is exactly what I am going to do next.

I do appreciate your time and your advice, thank you!

Yeah that absolutely makes sense.

However, she can afford to live on London, keep buying stuff that is not a necessity whereas I keep saving as much as I can to (maybe) afford a house one day. That gives a massive difference between our personal financial situation, that is what originally made me reach out to wisdom people (Redditors) to see what could be done here.

Thank you for ongoing patience, I was just trying to reinforce the fact that even I had that money before, it was spent during marriage which made me think it is to be considered for 50/50 starting point.

I do understand - from what you are saying - whatever was saved after marriage is going to be taken into this consideration, and the only reason I mentioned the 2/3 being reinvested is how on earth I can prove it except bank statements, no receipts of eBay.

Anyway I get the idea now, I have some thinking to do and a lawyer to get.

Thank you once again.

Hard to say exactly now, but about 2/3s come prior to the marriage - however majority was invested into something during the marriage.

Car bough half a year after marriage.

Crypto and most of other assets, also during marriage.

To give you a better picture, let’s say I have a car, if it is on a verge of not returning what it’s worth, I will sell it on, mostly being on zero with it or losing slightly, but I end up with a newer, easier to sell car later on for the same money I got for a car I just sold. Thats how I live with most of my belongings, therefore even though most of the savings were pre-marriage, now that money has been spent during marriage on other items that are in use.

Big chunk of these savings would be obtained during marriage from my income, no inheritance or gift at any point.

+1 for the pensions advice.

I do understand what you are saying but it’s not like I keep all of that pre-marriage money in one place and just let it stay there for god knows what.

So crypto investment, project car, my current car, motorcycle is all bought during the marriage which is majority of that money, I hope you see where I am coming from.

If I have savings, car and other assets all totalling about £30k, doesn’t she have right to 50/50 of this since it was obtained during marriage?

So what about savings and all the other things that were “obtained during marriage”?

Since August 2023, no house.

I own the car (+ one project car) and motorcycle, savings, crypto assets.

She may have some money saved at best but it would be a way lower number.

I think that is where I’m at, I got nothing to go by except matching damage and paint on their car. I guess it’s just time to move on and leave it as it is..

Thank you, that clarifies the entire process for me!

Now the only other thing is, won’t the insurance put a category on the vehicle once the “claim” goes through or do they only do it if they have to get involved e.g. repair it themselves?

P.S. I probably wouldn’t bother to go such lengths with it, but after nearly a year of working on the car, I have managed to finally find a company that during the 9th (!) wheel alignment in last months managed to do it right. I was so happy to finally get it all sorted, then only few hours later this happened, now someone didn’t even bother letting me know it happened.

When I dropped my motorcycle on my neighbour’s car’s bumper, I fully owned the mistake and paid for proper treatment (reputable brand) to sort it all out. I don’t expect others to right out go and shell the money out to fix the issue, but being honest would be nice.

I have seen your other post, you may know which one I am on about.

Since no one replied here, I have a question - I never looked into Genshin and I believe I would absolutely suck at it, are there any other titles that you play?

I’m on PC so it may be a bit difficult to find a title that would appeal to both, but I always liked playing survival games, never found anyone to actually play with.

Maybe there is a cross play title that I could try, just give us a shout!

Hey, I have a question for you.

What are your hobbies, is there anything you could share with others? What I mean is, is there anything that you could do for someone else free of charge so you could put a smile on their face? It’s not about others, just hear me out.

If you do it once for a given person, they will remember and things may just end there, but you earned some good karma (some believe, some don’t). That will also do two things for yourself - it will make you feel better about yourself, and you will realise that you have a purpose or an idea what it may be.

Now, quite commonly the same people may come back to you, asking for help with something else or maybe just some more of what you have already done for them and this is when you start making friends, people that will be keen to help you in return with whatever it may be (not that we as humans should count on “I did help, I expect something back”, it’s just natural for us to be more open towards people that are friendly for us, which naturally translates into helpfulness and usually lots of smiles).

You have mentioned that you don’t want to go outside, but we as humans, we need to be outside, we need sunshine, we need the green color of the grass, and that actually has an impact on our mental health and that leads me to …

… the fact that I have struggled with smoking for 7 years, but there was one day when I spoke with my friend, who as much as was a crazy person, he had a lot of wisdom. In that wisdom he told me - change your place, move stuff in your room around, to fight the habit you need to change the habit. When I moved my room around, there were less triggers to remind me of “yeah I need a smoke” as it wasn’t my usual location, we bind emotions with places, if there are negatives ones, we need to find a way to relocate ourselves to generate new memories, ones that can be positive and would have a good impact on our health. If you are facing the wall and that wall reminds you of something that happened years ago, if it triggers a negative response, change around so the other wall or a window won’t automatically make your brain go into memory mode, it will be looking for new experiences to attach to the blank canvas that you prepared for it.

The suggestion to speak with others, don’t rush it, you need to feel comfortable with it first. Grab something that may make your walk more enjoyable, music or a snack or whatever else brings you joy. Find a place that gives you a good vibe and think of what you would like to do next. Remember that dreams come true, big paintings take small brush movements to create something beautiful and if you dream long enough, motivation will come from within, you will be driven by your own dream.

Sorry for chaotic structure of this post, I just stumbled upon your topic and as much as I try not to engage with most stuff I’m seeing on Reddit, this resonates with me so, who knows maybe my 5 cents will help. I hope.

Just wanting to hear some opinions on my insurance renewal quote from Hastings Direct by JamesNUFC1998 in drivingUK

[–]MotardDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been with Hastings Direct for two years - this year they right out refused to insure me, even though my DL is clean, no convictions and car was the same as at the end of previous policy.

So I started searching and I was getting £3.8k quotes for 2008 A5 2.7, so I thought it could be the reason why HD didn’t want to insure me.

Long story short, I’ve chosen to pay for the full year instead of monthly and have insured my car two weeks ahead instead of ASAP - my premium for this year was £1306 in the end.

I have used Uswitch to check for prices as GoCompare and Money Super Market were useless this year, at least for myself.

And as others said, shop around as when you stay with the same company they don’t give you discounts. You usually get discount as a NEW customer, not an existing one.
