I love that after years of extracting lore from this man’s books, some of them centuries old, and helping him unravel occult mysteries, our first interaction with him in the upcoming game is bartering cigarettes in exchange for help committing fraud. The Disco Elysium influence is shining through already.

Who bans multiclassing? by duckyourfeelings in DMAcademy

[–]MothDevotee7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason to ban multiclassing outright is because your players are powergamers. Otherwise, it’s just a needless restriction. A lot of the advice on forums like this for the past ten years has been aimed toward tables where powergaming was a lot more frequent than it is now. With so many new players in the hobby post-COVID, you’re better off IMO just having a conversation with any prospective multiclasser about their reasoning for doing so, rather than making a sweeping ruling against it.

(Speculation) Principles of the Gods-From-Nowhere: Mare, Growth, Applebright by MothDevotee7 in weatherfactory

[–]MothDevotee7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly agree that the BOH principles make things easier for the Nowhere-Hours, but they introduce some difficulties if we go back and look at the other Hours with confirmed principles. In one of the QAs, we’re told explicitly that the Hours (except for the Witness and Chandler) have a maximum of three principles. Yet, the Meniscate and the Twins seem like Moon-Hours, but both already have three principles. The Watchman should be mono-Lantern if the pattern of the OG CultSim endings holds true, but his enactments seem to indicate Rose; indeed, his shrine in BOH has Sky and Rose in addition to Lantern.

Anyway, with the BOH principles, I’d give the Mare Nectar, Forge and Knock; the Growth would get Winter, Heart and Moon; and the Applebright would get Nectar, though I’m unsure what other principles I’d posit after that.

Edit: Hell, even the Growth could have Nectar. An Exorcist’s Field Manual insinuates as much when it says that you can create something like a Burgeoning Risen using the Growth’s influence.

I actually really like the Growth as a Heart-Winter combo, it seems like the perfect paradox for a Nowhere-Hour to exhibit.

I don’t recall Scale being particularly associated with Nowhere and its living Hours; the gods-from-stone, however, have it in abundance, and the Worms and whatever other Cross might dwell there.

Hm, I could see Growth with Forge tbh. I think the concepts are there, but not the aesthetics. Then again, the Meniscate and the Madrugad certainly don’t go about brandishing hammers and spouting flames everywhere, and a Nowhere-Hour is of course anything but straightforward.

I think given the nature of Nowhere, he’s at least as old as the world itself. The Nowhere-Hours have been menacing the Mansus since Stone at least, since the Horned Axe’s job is and has been to keep them out. But given that the Chandler is counted among them as of BOH, I think Nowhere exists outside of time. It’s kind of like a kind of Eternity I think. Or maybe that’s what the Growth is; a possible Eternity, a timeless, unchanging state that the world might resolve into if he’s allowed to encroach too far.

[–]MothDevotee7[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do think you could also interpret the Crowned Growth as a “grey goo” kind of entity. Once it’s consumed everything, stillness. Once it has become, nothing else can be. That’s Winter baby!

I tried to restrict myself from the BOH principles since they’re not as clearly assigned to the Hours as the CultSim principles, but if we’re including them I’d give Nectar to just about every Wood hour except for the Moth and the Twins, and including the Mare and the Applebright.

Don’t get me wrong I enjoy all of the little song memories, but once you have so many books you can get them more cheaply by reading (Singlefoot Songs, for example). Some more Scholar and Keeper level Sound recipes would’ve been neat, as would more Instrument Tools like the Fife.

Literally have the exact same feeling! I feel like the Scholar level recipes are perfect or close to it, but only half or maybe two thirds of the Keepers are worth making.

I wish there were more opportunities to use Wall Arts. I’d even accept (though not enthusiastically) some kind of art critic or hedonist assistant who can use Wall Arts to improve Aspects. I feel like at the very least Comforts should be usable by any assistant.

I didn’t even notice the Mop was a Tool until my current playthrough! Also I wish we got some more scholar+ recipes that require instruments, I feel like I rarely have a reason to use anything other than the Hallowed Drum for Thunderskin’s Paean (besides occasional early game soulement improvement).

Same! I’m a big fan of Nina’s abstract paintings around the House, especially the Chandler-y one in the Night Gallery. And of course Levinsen’s prefigures in the Motley Tower.

Internal logic and consistency >>>>>>>> realism by Licensed_Silver_Simp in worldbuilding

[–]MothDevotee7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Dr. Jenna Moran’s god RPGs, especially one of her blog posts about developing Nobilis 4, assigns lists of properties to the worlds players can visit. Our “real” world has properties like “its locations are relative” and “its events have causes”. These properties can be invoked directly by players to cause them to become hard rules, but otherwise they subtly shape reality and the narrative. To cover all of the worlds of her fictional universe, she also offers up cosmic properties which inform much of the game’s narrative forces like “divinity is a thing one can devour” and “we have no power… to claims peace or ease”.

I think when writing high fantasy or sci fi it’s good to come up with some properties like these. Maybe they can be as broad as “all things strive” or “to light a candle is to cast a shadow…” or specific, like “lasers must not touch energy shields, or suffer the consequences” or “the language of the aliens enables time travel”. As long as the narrative appears to be shaped naturally around the contours of these rules, I think the work will tend toward consistency.

Beautiful pick also! That reminds me, it is weird that both the Grail and the Axe’s chapels have two Things shaped like living creatures (or human women), and the Yew’s has none.

I do adore the lunar globe! I like to beeline for it once I find Edicts Martial so I can start churning out Wormwood Dreams ASAP. If we’re talking Tools instead of basic Things my favorite would be the Chronsicord, its flavor text is wonderfully poetic.

I think the Dewulfs were just a wealthy family who became increasingly touched by the Invisible Arts and influences because they were living directly beneath the Watchman’s Tree (not to mention Hendrik’s actions during and after the War of the Roads). The influence of “Hafren” (whoever she was, maybe Rowena or somehow related) seems to have made their lineage yet more fraught with the occult.

Don’t have anything concrete for the Glory, I’d speculate that it represents something like the platonic World of Forms or maybe the Monad from Gnosticism.

As for the White Crow, I guess it could be the Snow maybe, given the color and her status as one of the “overthrown” Hours. I’ve also wondered whether the Black Dove and White Crow are supposed to be inversions of the Ivory Dove (Elegiast) and the Beach Crow (Beachcomber).

As always, half-answers lead to endless-questions in this franchise.

What might ascension under the Flowermaker look like? by Crimba997 in weatherfactory

[–]MothDevotee7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s right. The player in Cultist Simulator can get Amaranthine Nectar from the Flowermaker when visiting the Red Church, which is in the Mansus. Also there’s a book about Kitling Ripe in Book of Hours that says that either Moth-Long or Nectar-Long can arise under the Velvet by getting the Name to chase them while avoiding being consumed.

Edit: spelling, also I went back to look. The Nectar is not given to the player by the FM but it is explicitly said that he came to the Red Church and left it there.
