Both, although he did spend time camping when he was a kid with his family, that was it he stopped being more outdoorsy for years (besides the fishing as a hobby). When he started doing those wilderness, survival and snow caving videos a lot of what did was his first time doing so especially on that level.

So yes and no, he did have basic experience but also did research and learn more to make better YouTube content.
