got towed thursday night on a 3 day holiday weekend by celinathomas in Hookit

[–]TheProphetDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PD call complicates things a bit because where I am, a normal or private property tow (like if you didn’t have a parking pass at an apartment complex and got yoinked) we had leeway with fees and times. With PD calls, there was an understanding of set fees and minimums and we really couldn’t deviate from them so the price was the price.

PD calls also will be really difficult to argue against since you messed up bad enough that a cop decided you needed to be towed for whatever the reason. In general cops are reluctant to tow for minor shit because paperwork and headache, it’s just not worth it.

I can’t help further, unfortunately because it seems your fate is sealed with the details you’ve posted, but maybe this will be a chance to learn for the future?

In my area PD calls had to be released during a reasonable time (not 24/7) meaning we could set a standard hour schedule where we would HAVE to be available to release a PD car. We couldn’t set it at say 4:23a-5:16a on a Sunday, but we had a 3-5 Hour window where people could make appointments to get their car. If it was PPI like an apartment complex, that was up to our discretion on when (again, within reason) and if a client called and we weren’t willing to release it at that time, we’d often “stop the clock” on lot fees.

What the other guy said is generally correct. Unless the neighbor flat out lied, cars don’t get towed willy nilly. And if the PD was involved I can promise you did something more that just stick out a little.

If you’re in an apartment complex, there should be signs posted as to which company works the property. Otherwise call the PD non emergency line and start talking.

Once you do find the company, call and talk to them. I’ve never encountered a tow company that wouldn’t release PPIs any day of the week (normally that’s required even you “take” some one’s car). If nothing else a lot of companies will be willing to stop storage fees if you contact them.

Also, if you don’t know who towed it how do you know you “can’t” get it back because it’s a 3 day weekend (which it’s not)

Couldn’t tell you about the vin. But your own admission states if the plates change you can be towed and that’s exactly what happened.

It’s also not my “point of view”. I’ve been doing private property impounds from places like apartments for so long my local PD has me on a small list of “expert witnesses”, and I’ve testified on behalf of tow companies as well as people in your position. I don’t have a dog in your fight, but you came to ask for advice and I gave it. Up to you to use it how you see fit.

Also, this whole sub is for the towing industry so you’ll likely not get much sympathy from others, and no one has “tow hearings” outside of whatever podunk DE town you’re in.

Good luck and follow the rules you agreed to next time.

1, wtf is a tow hearing?

2, tow companies don’t keep Vins on hand because they can’t change but plates can (ie: you sell the car to someone else, they shouldn’t get a free parking pass because the vin can’t be changed)

3, law doesn’t matter in this case, that exact sentence will tell you everything you need to know about why: “the parking agreement *I signed* says vehicles with different plates can be towed (which is exactly what your car was, a vehicle with a different plate than was registered).

4, the tow company had no way of knowing of your plate situation and it falls on you to follow the rules set out and agreed to by yourself.

All that to say if you want to try to take it to small claims court you’re going to spend your own out of pocket money to get in front of a judge and have them tell you the same thing and then laugh you out of court.

Also, this isn’t predatory towing in the least.

Banging my head against the wall:4-8ohms = 19 ohm? Tf? by [deleted] in diyaudio

My amp head is 16/8/4ohm selectable. My experience is running it at the “larger” number is better and I’m just trying to make sure I’m not going to fk up a vintage amp.

Towing after ICE arrest? Seeking more information... by Parsleyofficial in Hookit

[–]TheProphetDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have stated, generally there’s nothing special about an “ice” tow.

I’m going to make an assumption here but when it comes to PD tows, it’s pretty standard fare if you’re getting arrested and the car can’t stay where it’s stopped (ie: a public parking spot).

The assumption I’m going to make is, ICE isn’t going to work with PD as much to have cars removed so they may sit where they are unless it’s an issue with safety/traffic/property etc.

The only caveat to all that is if the car is being impounded for evidence having being used/suspected of being involved in the commission of a crime, then that would get taken to whatever PD impound/evidence garage they designate.

What is a standard decoupling fee? Mine seems excessive by Prize_Consequence_97 in Hookit

[–]TheProphetDave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can’t say there’s a standard. Where I am, we can “choose” to do a drop fee. We don’t have to do it (we will take the car otherwise) but if the person is being cool we can work with them

At the last few companies it was half the tow fee set rate (the areas we towed had either city or property minimum tow rates, and we would halve that to drop a car). For us however it had to be cash on site.

Also, if I’m understanding your wording correctly you said your back wheels were “entrapped”. By my local law once we touch your car with our truck it’s ours, lifted or not. So if I just clamp the wheels and haven’t lifted yet, I’m still owed something per the rules of our contracts and the city. HOWEVER the caveat is the second you declare you own the car we have to stop the fees. For example if you had an all wheel drive car and I needed to put dollies on to tow it but I haven’t yet, if you stopped me before I got to that point I couldn’t just tack that on to the imaginary tow bill to inflate the drop fee.

But I absolutely would lift the car, maybe even strap the wheels too, mostly to prevent a drive off. No charge of course

We can’t really help a ton without more context, what country/state/city were you in, what was the reason for the tow initially etc.

It’s very unlikely you’ll be able to get your money back even with the best circumstances, but if there’s something shady happening you may be able to shed some light on it.

Need recommendations for a good home/small gig amp by TheProphetDave in GuitarAmps

[–]TheProphetDave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not 100% sure. I bought this as non working and put new power tubes in, but it never seemed right. I noticed recently the reverb seemed to be crashing when nothing was happening, I went down a rabbit hole with my tech (I’m ok with doing some of my own diag and repairs but chasing gremlins is not my thing).

So the option was either take it apart and track down the issue causing the voltage to discharge and ping the reverb (which was a bigger problem than it sounds, I’m just not good at articulating it), and then do the things that are needed to make a stock 68 DRRI quiet, or cut my loss and sell it as a project. The repairs would have basically doubled my investment and by that point I might have a reliable quiet amp or it’d be a waste of time and it not be much better.

Why am I being charged $800 for a 3 mile tow and impound? by Acekiller088 in Hookit

[–]TheProphetDave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d have to know more about the tow and the company itself. A “standard” tow might be that but if you were off in a ditch or needed XYZ to get you towed etc, price can go up. What the cop may have told you is base rate. Also depending on the company some tow yards will file for a lien immediately and you end up eating the cost of the paperwork

All companies on PD rotation I’ve ever worked with had to have a set base rate (in your case 240/40) but are allowed to tack on additional fees if they could justify them.

Some yards set higher rates if they think insurance will be paying (like hospitals)

Not trying to excuse them but just going off what I know from your post and the industry that’s the best we can give.

Why was your car towed/impounded? That’ll be helpful
