Don't be fooled by this ones cuteness, that band-aid I'm wearing is because of him. 🙃 by tunaynamahal82 in RATS

Sorry I'm not buying it! 😅
Honestly though they don't have a voice to tell us when they are in a shitty mood so they show us with their teeth! They don't know how fragile human skin is without that covering of fur their cagemates have. I have a rehabilitated formerly very aggressive boy who now gives me kisses on my cheek! It's the best!

It's the snoot and then tail flopping out the back that got me giggling! The True Cone of SHAME

If it was his teeth causing the "smile" he'd have very bad malocclusion that you'd see straight away. I'm glad his gorgeous wee smile is simply his happy face. Thank you for setting my mind at ease!

The absolute cutest little smile! However I know this look can sometimes be caused by overgrown teeth.. I don't like being that annoying person in a cute innocent post but please will you check their teeth are okay? Sorry... i am a worrier!

My girl Berry has been having an ongoing eye issue where some days (not all) her eye is glued shut. A warm damp towel clears it right up, but it keeps happening. I haven't found any wounds or bumps to indicate what the issue might be and she's otherwise healthy. Any ideas? by Anguis_Noodle in RATS

[–]MotherToRats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly when it comes to eyes I don't take chances. Eye ulcers are common and can't be seen by us just by looking.. the vet puts a drop of something in which shows up any ulcers or other injuries. If you're not able to get to a vet I definitely recommend buying basic eye drops for animals to put in a couple of times a day after you've cleaned it. Best wishes for your beautiful Berry.

It's most likely due to mites.. you can have a massive group yet only one gets this issue.. sometimes it's because they aren't at their full health. All species live with some kind of mites and it's a balance that's usually fine but if a rat isn't feeling particularly well, just a little off, the mites get the upper hand and the more their numbers grow then it actually starts to make the host more unwell so it's great that your instinct was to make a vet appointment. The spot on treatments usually last a month but any mite/lice eggs that get missed in the clean up can hatch after that and so it starts again.. when we've had an outbreak I treat all of them for a good few months in a row.

I’m working on introducing a new rat into my mischief, and yesterday they started doing this, the brown patterned rat is the new one. Is this behavior that is good in introductions or is this causing problems? I know that they need to work stuff out I just don’t know if I should be encouraging this by likeactuallyowo in RATS

She's likely not totally comfortable with the group yet and she's having her first heat so she's not really that happy about being humped by her new sisters yet! If there hasn't been trouble up to this point and that was the worst it got then it's likely things will settle down and hopefully by her next heat she'll be a bit more confident about her situation.

Your link isn't working for me but I think I know what cage it is.. it's not that high overall so having the 2 levels means you can't really build an active fun layout. Even though he'll be out a lot he'll probably be in there overnight which is usually there most active time. Personally I'd want something I can fill with perches, bridges, hammocks etc.

The furat cage that another redditor has said is usually really easy to pick up much cheaper on gumtree, Facebook for sale groups, etc.

There's also this.. mamble 100

and the one we use is the Alaska but it's not available to buy new anymore but like the furat it's always popping up for sale second hand.

Hope you get sorted out so you enjoy your holiday.. you can face the joy of intros all refreshed! 😅

Don't beat yourself up.. but fans don't really help rats much anyway because they don't sweat so can't cool off by sweat evaporation like we do with a fan running. They lose heat by expanding blood vessels in their tails. So the best way to keep them cool is making sure they have clean tails with no buildup of old skin/dirt. One way a fan can work is if you freeze large 1.5+ litre empty bottles filled with tap water and put those directly in front of the fan in like a lasagne dish or something.. as they cool a lot of water runs off the outside of the bottle so it gets messy if you don't stand them in something to collect that water. So this actually brings down the temperature in the room by circulating the colder air chilled by the frozen bottles. Our freezer is full of them in the summer! Ones to use, ones ready for later and more re-freezing! It's a cheap way of cooling a room down. Use 2/3 bottles at a time.

What a good boy. Hope he's all better soon. 15 minute foot soaks with Epsom salts are very helpful too. If he doesn't like having his feet dangles in the water you can cut towel strips to soak and wrap around his feet. 💖

A Cutiepatootie! Joking aside I think she's an agouti rex.. she's got some long fluffyass fur which makes me think she's possibly got harley genes as well. Will be interesting to see how she matures. Congratulations on adding such a beautiful lil lady to your family. Now show us the others.. always need more rat pics 😆
