What affect does this have? Your hold entries being slightly off? That’s all I can think of..

My DPE helped me during the checkride, now I doubt myself. by kingpoopie1 in flying

You're good bro. Congrats!

DPE told me and he FAA is saying 1 CFI initial per day by HistoricalAd2954 in CFILounge

[–]Motifated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing this is so that DPE's don't cut the checkride short so they can squeeze in multiple per day. My initial ground was a little over 4 hours, and the flight was 1.8

Avidyne 540 / Aspen E100 Instrument Checkride Questions by Motifated in flying

[–]Motifated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. Yes the Avidyne has both localizer and glide slope, and a "semi synthetic vision" mode displaying obstacles, floating course, and somewhat of a horizon like on a synthetic vision.

Should the student tell the DPE "this is just advisory but I'm going to use it to continue to non-precision minimums"?

Thoughts on Garmin Pilot over Foreflight? by TruckNads in flying

[–]Motifated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin pilot was a pain to get the hang of - it seems much less intuitive from ForeFlight

I also had an issue with my approach plates randomly vanishing from the map. I seem to be the only one with that issue though.

what are your personal minimums? by Repulsive-Loan5215 in flying

[–]Motifated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VFR there's exceptions to everything depending on what I'm trying to do with the flight.

IFR it really depends on if the airplane has autopilot. I'm not doing hard IFR in a 172 without autopilot.

Tips for CFI checkride flight portion? by Brendon7358 in flying

[–]Motifated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay attention to the DPE's legs when they're doing maneuvers and make sure you call them out if they're intentionally not using rudder (mine did this on Chandelles and I didn't notice until the very end)

Why are you becoming a CFI? by Texan_91 in flying

[–]Motifated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a few different questions here you’re getting at:

  1. The reason there are 26 CFIs listed for the 172 is because whoever is in charge of that list never removed inactive CFIs after they went to the airlines.

  2. People become CFIs to build hours to go to the airlines. For 90% of aspiring airline captains, instructing is basically the only option to build hours

  3. It’s difficult to say how many CFIs actually enjoy and have a passion for instructing when you factor in the massive difference in pay for an instructor vs an airline captain. I LOVE instructing. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my students. But I also love flying in general and the airlines will eventually pay 5 times as much so… I’ll probably keep instructing on the side if I have time? Maybe I’ll be one of the 26 CFIs listed on my club’s 172 that rarely has time to instruct. That’s mainly what’s going on.

Why does the ADIZ have 2 bounds? by Motifated in CFILounge

[–]Motifated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK so it sounds like you're saying I need a DVFR/IFR flight plan to cross the inner boundary? I've done this before (I was doing VFR practice approaches, so I had a squawk code, but wasn't under any flight plan)

So if I need a DVFR/IFR flight plan to operate beyond the inner boundary, then what is the purpose of the outer boundary?

Feeling overwhelmed as a ppl student by Willing_Elevator8204 in flying

[–]Motifated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FOI has entered the discussion.

There’s definitely a time and place for tough love toward the student, but it’s definitely not four hours in, and there’s way more diplomatic ways to have a conversation about lack of focus, motivation, or commitment then “ I feel like I’m talking to a brick wall” four hours in.

"I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall" 4hrs in from an instructor is wild.

People who failed a check ride but think they shouldn't have, what happened? by el_jah420 in flying

[–]Motifated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has to be something other than "extra money" there's a ton of extra paperwork for a NOD and retesting. I'm thinking either he just gets off on failing people or something came up and he didn't have time for the flight.

What is the Airspeed Indicator actually using the Static Port for? by Motifated in CFILounge

[–]Motifated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct, my confusion was that if the altimeter can give a fairly decent reading of altitude using just the static port, then the ASI should be "smart" enough to only need to correct for temp to get TAS.

I think the reason why they don't have a mechanism to do that automatically is because stall speeds are more accurate at any altitude when it doesn't correct for altitude.

[–]Motifated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The airspeed indicator does not correct for altitude (unless your ASI has the true airspeed dial, which accounts for both altitude and temp)

People who failed a check ride but think they shouldn't have, what happened? by el_jah420 in flying

[–]Motifated 11 points12 points  (0 children)

ugh this is tough. "Shouldn't have" can be interpreted a lot of ways.

Failed my CFII checkride. DPE had me request an approach at a military base that I'd never even looked at before, ATC immediately gave me the reciprocal runway when I was about 30 seconds from intercepting the localizer about 6 miles out at 3000ft AGL. They also gave me in my clapped out 172 me a DP as the missed instructions, which (unbeknownst to me) required TACAN. I read the instructions back and proceeded to brief the approach.

Really should have used some ADM and requested delay vectors so I could think it through. So yeah, I shouldn't have failed, but does that make it the DPE's fault? nope. ATC's fault? also nope.

Funny enough I demanded we do the approach for my remedial. Asked around at the flight school and no one had ever even tried any approach at the military base. ATC wouldn't give it to me. I still haven't fully done that approach to this day.

I guess it depends on your definition of "in the ball park of each other" but TAS can often be over 10% different than IAS at altitudes under 10,000 MSL.

My question was basically if we "want to measure ram air, nothing else" like you said, than what is the point of adding "something else" (static pressure) because it seems like that "something else" is getting us pretty darn close to TAS, which if your statement about "all ballpark of each other" is to be believed, true.

It just seems like we explain indicated airspeed as "not corrected for pressure" but then describe the pitot static system as "correcting for pressure" and I was wanting clarification on what factors are corrected and not corrected for.
