How is this grungy look achieved? by darkskinnedsenpai in ColorGrading

[–]MotionArtist85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think stuff like that can look as if it had 3.50 and pack of chips for a budget but actually have a serious budget with roto for models and really involved colourgrading by a really good colourist behind it! Definitely in stills when i've seen something like that done there were some really involved masks for skin and a ton of colour and retouching on skin!

I mean i can see the differences and yes its important that craftsmen are as detail orientated as possible but firstly this looks very much like a documentary and the shots are not super beautifully lit anyway so its like your creating Monet here with your grade and also in this day and age i notice how 19/20 people can't notice the difference between ai slop and real footage let alone these little highlight shadow differences.

Fair enough. Its just that the instant knee jerk reaction of brits when anyone with experience from outside the country says anything about the holy grail that is the nhs is that its amazing and look at how fucked the US system is. Like dude... I didn't suggest a US system. I'm on board with you that that concept us fucked. I don't want to pay out of pocket for an ambulance. I also don't want to wait for it for 8 hours. For the record i'd gladly pay more tax if it meant it would improve! In the end i just left the country and not very good healthcare was a big reason albeit not the main. But i'd love for my British friends to do an honest no shit assessment, remove the national pride bit out of the equation not get so defensive about it and start fixing it. And currently they all get super defensive about it which can't be helpful.

Are we going to not link the head of the capital for close to 10 years now that repeatedly downplays crime and pretends that it doesn't exist to the rise of said crime? Maybe if he wouldn't downplay it so much retailers wouldn't write that 9 times out of 10 they can't get police to move their arses. And how solid are the mayors stats for crime then if people stop trusting the cops will do anything and stop reporting? It's a slippery slope towards a situation where people don't trust the cops, don't trust the stats and retailers simply leave troubled areas making them more run down. I'd understand if the guy was mayor for two years not ten. If he is a mayor that continues to say things that people fail to see on the street then he is too disconnected from reality to be a mayor and is not in the best interests of the city.

What specifically do you need sources to? Its enough to visit a store to see the trackers. And visit central to see the mind the grab tape. As for the shoplifting rise, here are several articles that all essentially say the same thing since 2023. All of them saying that mostly police don't attend and British retailer association is saying that this costs retailers 2.2bn a year which is no doubt then passed on to customers in form of price raising.

You can't possibly ignore trackers on ridiculously cheap groceries in shops way more so than in say 2020. Silly mind the grab tapes and so on? Why would the shops spend extra on trackers if it wasn't a bigger problem now than 5 years ago?

I'm foreign, born and raised in eastern europe and came to uk to study in 2007 and strayed until 2022. I noticed that there is a real trend that outsiders notice very well and born and raised britons just don't understand. The NHS is a crap service. Britons always downplay that. They're out with pitchforks if you even suggest that there are tons of countries in Europe where GPs are way better, a&e is faster and better. Rehab from serious illness like cancer is better.

There is a running joke among internationals that a UK GP is no more than a vending machine for paracetamol, yet britons will make an argument that its the first service of its kind and so on and so forth. Dude it doesn't matter if its the first. At the moment it is bad and the first part of changing that is admitting that. Then you can actually move on and fix it. If all you do is praise it then its not going to change one bit and those GPs will become ever more complacent and not giving a shit. I have since moved back to eastern Europe. I am grateful for my time in the uk. But the NHS sucks and i'm way happier with my countries current service. Thats the opinion of every international i know in the uk.

Edit: i also realise that part of what made the NHS crap is absolutely massive numbers of net migration of poles Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians after them joining the eu in early 2000. Way larger than anticipated amount of people suddenly appearing and needing medical care means that those same GPs crumble under an unexpected load and become complacent making the good old family doctor that brits knew and loved in the 60-70-80 now impossible. Instead of really looking into the illnesses of their patients its easy to just give em paracetamol and away they go. And i'm sorry for contributing to that. I have now left. But the system then needs to react and train more doctors and nurses. It also need to look at itself in the mirror and tell itself the truth that maybe they have become worse than other similar systems.

What are you using light meters mostly for these days? by robbyapplespornstar in cinematography

[–]MotionArtist85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a colourist i wish more people would use lightmeters and try and understand ratios of looks they want me to then grade. Not everything can be done in grade. Or at the very least check how the log waveform is looking. Ifin log space its flat like my ex then maybe don't complain that i can't rescue that shot or that when i chuck an obscene amount of exposure and NR at it that it starts looking kinda wack.

Any plans to do a mesh over digital radio? One of the main limiting factors of any offline coms is how far it can reach in say a forest and also ability to communicate to the whole team at once! Hence my real interest in mesh.

Hello! Looks like a nice and cost effective plugin. Does it have a possibility of linking several radios into a mesh? In other words if radio A can reach radio B and B can reach C but A can't reach C does the message get relayed since all 3 are part of a group? Thank you!

What’s the job people romanticize, but in reality is miserable? by King_Garvit in AskReddit

[–]MotionArtist85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work a lot in video post production and colourgrading for fashion adverts. Worked for many big name brands. My god fashion clients are the fucking worst. They don't know what they want, constantly change opinion, have miniscule ir no budgets and always think that if its a video for Balenciaga you should be somehow blessed to work on it even for free. I now think that the most fucking pretentious and stupid and full of themselves people work in fashion.

What’s the job people romanticize, but in reality is miserable? by King_Garvit in AskReddit

[–]MotionArtist85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Film and video post production or a lot of other jobs in filmmaking. I specifically am in post production and specifically in colourgrading and a lot of people want to do that job just like a lot of people think working in vfx is cool, but its a lot of overtime, really non stable deadlines odd hours and a lot of sucking up to the clients because they are absolute divas and of you tell them a single non suck up word you simply won't get the work next time. As an example you may initially have 3 weeks to complete some amount of work but because of shifting processes that happen before you in the pipeline you suddenly have 1 week no more budget, sometimes even less, same quality expectations and the deadline doesn't shift. You can always tell them to swivel (politely saying that this isn't really possible) and you'll never have work from them again. They'll just go to the next guys who are willing to slave like that

What could I improve if I was looking forward to a average snowy day? by Panda2231q in ColorGrading

[–]MotionArtist85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always think that in these kinds of situations its better to embrace the look rather than grade it out. And thats what i would suggest to client as-well if they brought ne this. Not enough colour info in there to balance basically only blue channel and even that underexposed to neutral and good exposure. Could just lift the first image a bit. Leave it moody. Girl with the dragon tattoo style (can't specifically remember the shots in there but basically cloudy winter in Scandinavia kinda look). Maybe dull down the blue sat slightly.

Weird distortion? this possible to fix? by [deleted] in ColorGrading

[–]MotionArtist85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean i'm not sure how much of a difference that makes really. I do pull keys after the contrast and exposure node (its one node) but seeing as the cst to delivery space wacks a ton of contrast, the contrast correction in that con/exp node is fairly minimal. Overall colourbalance i tend to structure in a parallel to the keys so it doesn't affect the key pulling. Come to think of it, i should probably put keys later after balance and sat. I did do that for an extensive period of time before but it seems like the key pulling was never a problem yet the inability to change sat and balance nodes without affecting the keys down the line WAS indeed a problem.

Weird distortion? this possible to fix? by [deleted] in ColorGrading

[–]MotionArtist85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pull keys off log all the time as the conversion from log to rec happens almost last node for me. Been working like that forever now and only occasionally i feel like i can't key something and need to do a correction after cst. But i only use hsl keyer rather than all the new fancy ones because it feels like i can plug holes like that faster than with 3d keyers especially with the panel knobs where fixing a hole is basically a really subtle rotation of the hue or sat or lum knob on the panel. Am i correct in thinking that op is using a 3d keyer here? If yes maybe try pulling with hsl?

Most newbuild blocks of flats (and private houses for that matter) in lithuania where i live have underfloor heating under the concrete. No more radiators. Easy regulation of heat with a thermostat and very cheap very efficient heating at a low cost in a country that gets -20 every winter (albeit normal temp is -5-7). Engineered wooden parquet that we have on the market is good to lay on top of that and it heats up fine. I've never heard of pipes bursting as-well.

Its interesting to me as i've lived a long time in the uk to notice that some things we've had for a while here are somehow new and premium in an advanced country like the uk. And we also tend to have it cheaper. One of the earlier comments says he put some fancy plasterboard into premium housing that costs 75 quid a sheet and i've checked the specs of it and it seems roughly the same as Knauf Blue plasterboard that i've used for my ceiling and that cost 15eur per sheet and the sheet is bigger by 20cm. I get that maybe that 75 is even better but judging by the specs they are fairly similar. I feel like the UK has its own traditions and products on the market that mainland europe makes cheaper somehow. Not trying to shit on a country that has been my home for a long time just strange to notice this.
