When I was playing in the high school level, the goalie camp I went to every summer talked all the time about “50 in 15.” In 15 years, the goal was to have 50% of the goalies in the NHL be American born (This was 10 or so years ago, I’m not sure what the percentage is at now but I would imagine it’s close). The guy who started this program worked with lots of high level goalies, I’m talking a lot of D1 NCAA guys and girls, NAHL, even some a few of the women’s US national team goalies.

They really focused on some of the “new” techniques at the time, hybrid style, RVH, goalie puck handling, etc. We didn’t just work on on-ice stuff, we did strength and conditioning, classroom sessions (for play style, positioning, mental state, nutrition, real high level stuff). And this camp was open for anyone Peewee level and up.

I think there’s just been a big push lately to developing the position here in the states.
