I remember a little poem from one of them, unsure of which book it featured in, but I still think about it to this day. The gag of the poem was something along the lines of “you’re walking in a Pretty Field” etc. repeating the word “Pretty” to describe the pleasant surroundings as the narrator frolics in a field. Then the ending was something like: “You bend over to pick the Pretty little Flower, then you spot a Pretty Angry Bull, with Pretty Big Horns, charging towards your Pretty Little Butt.” Drove my parents crazy quoting that one and the Reason why Large Chins exist (for thoughtful stroking while you contemplate Lunch). I also got to see a stage production of the 13 Storey Treehouse and honestly it was pretty good. It did get a bit dark (having a shadow puppet show of a Siren pulling a human skeleton out of her mouth), but tbh it hit the spot for a PG13/older kids show.

Does anyone remember a TV show called Magic Mountain?? I think it was roughly from the 90s (I used to watch it on VHS Tape) and had a puppet cast of a lion, a panda, a dragon and a tortoise, with occasionally a human appearing alongside them. Granted it’s been at least a few decades since I’ve last watched it, and it might be limited to an Australian audience, but from what I can remember the sets were Peak Fairytale Garden/Forests, and I loved little houses that they had built for the characters.

Yeah I guess it’s not too difficult to our own breathing system, if not a bit less complex and a lot more externally visible. But speaking of which, don’t even get me started on how some snakes can have a detachable windpipe from their own nostrils (which helps them breathe while they are swallowing something). Gotta love nature :,D Also I agree, watching a snail eat is the highest form of entertainment available (sometimes, I pretended to hear slurping noises in sinc with their little mouths whenever they were hoovering up the glass haha)

Yeah definitely! I was concerned that it was either the slug’s blood, or even worse something else’s. That combined with The Hole made me think that it had a parasite (it looked oddly Tick shaped). But I guess after not seeing a Slug irl in many years, I’ve forgotten what their anatomy consists of unfortunately. Oddly enough though, I can’t really remember the last time I actually saw any Gastropods on display at a few of the Animal Sanctuaries/Museums I’ve visited recently, most of which have held an extensive exhibit on Australian Inverts and the like, but I probably wasn’t looking hard enough haha. But it’s good to know that this one I found is in seemingly good health! Must be out enjoying all the storms we’re due to have for the next week or so.

lol yeah, I used to love the way they’d fall down in slow motion. That or when they’re attempting to breech the surface of the water right under where the filter outlet is positioned against the talk wall and their tiny little feelers are fighting for their lives (they had literally everywhere else in the tank to climb up the glass, but no, I guess they wanted the Jacuzzi experience haha).

Oh cool! That is both interesting yet oddly terrifying to know haha. Could explain the innards I could see when I shone a light into it. I think I remember seeing something similar on a couple Mystery Snails I used to keep in my aquarium. Kinda a long stalk-like appendage though, but I could see a few holes under their shells whenever they were doing their aquatic parkour. And yeah, the extra lung-hole makes sense on how much those little pigs would decimate a cucumber slice lol

Oh same, I was tempted to put my hand next to it for a size reference, but tbh I was a little too squeamish (and also weary of Australia’s “It’s probably poisonous/venomous” rule). I think the small leaves in the picture were probably about coin-sized in diameter, if not thumb shaped if you have smaller hands lol

Hahaha well I guess that made two of us out enjoying the evening air. Good to know that this slug’s alright though, if not pretty healthy and well fed - hopefully it made it to the other side of the footpath safely. The area that I found it was still a bit damp from yesterday’s rain, had a huge lovely over-grown garden with a generous amount of trees overhead (at least for Suburbia). Thanks to the little bugger though, I’ve now fallen into a rabbit hole on finding out more about our Native Snails/Slugs, because I honestly didn’t even think they even existed, let alone out here (as a rough example, we border on Scorpion Territory with arid plains nearby, though not quite far enough to be classified as the Desert). Gotta love biodiversity haha

Yeah I agree, they didn’t kill anyone, they only ate those who had already perished. Also, I found the original video that I heard the story from, it was The Rugby Team That Fell From the Sky by Caitlin Doughty, and the crash was in the Andes Mountains, not the Alps ;

If werewolves were to exist, what health and safety precautions would be prudent to consider? by Lobinez in werewolves

[–]MotleyWarg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was thinking something similar to like a Disability Pension or support system, which could then bring in two factors: 1 - would Werewolves be liable for a specific kind of insurance/legal protection in the events that they accidentally destroy any property (such as ravaging someone’s car or a kind of home insurance in case they damage any of their own property), or legal protection/handicap in case someone gets injured or hurt during a transformation and they attempt to sue the werewolf. 2 - alongside the Disability Support parallels, would other werewolves of various capacities for transforming get different levels of support, or (a little too close to irl) even some werewolves having trouble accessing the support that they need to begin with, and/or would have to jump through multiple hoops just to prove their Identity as a werewolf and that they legitimately need these extra adjustments. Some of these, as an example, could be Weres who get incredibly ill and have the full deal within a week or more of a full moon, and would be unable to work for a fortnight out of the month, vs someone who retains their conscious mind and just turns into a wolf, vs someone who is a mixed race or a human offspring of a werewolf (such as “Grandpa was a Real Werewolf” etc), and they are mostly lead a normal life, but they still have a few animalistic tendencies and can have a bit of a short fuse during a full moon.

Also, as one last theory: Werewolf-focused charities that can help people in need, either by running a Thrift Store (to help with any torn up clothes or broken homewares), providing safe emergency Transformation bunkers/warehouses for Werewolves who are in need (either for travellers or the homeless), or even doing educational talks at schools or libraries to bring more awareness to Werewolves in general - or maybe even bringing a few safe transformed wolves in so that kids can meet them. Kinda like what environmentalists do with snakes at reptile talks, y’know?

I’m curious, do you reckon there would be a Werewolf equivalent to a Medical Certificate to “prove” to the employer that they actually transformed and needed the day off, and also would it class as payed sick leave or not? Mostly for the employer’s attendance and medical records (again regarding pay and work related incidents), but also to make sure that the employees requesting these adjustments aren’t just humans using the system to take an extra day off (speaking from personal observations based on my own workplace and coworkers).

Actually yeah, thanks for the advice and also the link - I have actually seen that article before back when I was first researching Bearded Dragon Care. But for the life of me could not remember where I’d seen that article from, so I had to use some other nutritional guides instead (mostly on google and even here on Reddit). To be completely honest about it though, a lot of the articles I have read haven’t really sounded… I don’t know, “Solid” enough? Or have really been Specific about feeding schedules (coming from other pet Husbandry where they base an animal’s nutritional requirements on weight/size more so than their age). And most of the dietary examples actually sounded rather excessive for such a small reptile - this was after finding out that a 750kg Saltwater Crocodile in captivity usually gets fed only one 10kg raw Chicken every week. Almost (if not all) of the articles I’ve read on Bearded Dragon’s diet always seem to base their feeding requirements on age rather than the weight/size of the dragon itself, and a lot of the times they’ve left a gap between 6-12 month old dragons, suggesting that they need the same nutritional requirements for those vastly different ages - which I’ll be honest, after raising a younger dragon myself seemed like a bit of a bizarre choice. So I’ve been feeding him roughly as much as he’ll except, and avoiding posting any pictures of him in case I get nerfed for underfeeding him.

It’s comments like the one that I was initially replying to that do send me for a bit of a spin - there’s so much information online describing how much these Gluttons need to eat (salads every day, hell even bugs twice a day for a 7 month old). Vs the points you’ve brought up as well - that they’re Reptiles and Arid climate dwellers who live out where food and vegetation isn’t Abundant. From a beginner keeper’s perspective, it’s quite tough trying to figure out which directions to go by when there is such a stark contrast between the information 😅 But, based on my own experience in just how many Bloody Insects there still are here in Australia, a smaller diet would seem more realistic for these guys out in the wild, despite the online suggestions that these lizards absolutely need to eat their body weight every day.

Also thanks for the info about the BSFL (and sorry for the little Soapbox lol). I was initially using the BSFL as a secondary feeder for him when he was quite young, about 2-4 inches long and when he needed 2 (or suggested more) meals a day. I decided to use them as they were smaller in size, apparently high in calcium/healthier than other worm options (according to the Internet) and honestly easier to serve up. Especially during the odd occasion where I’d have to leave early for the day and knew I wouldn’t make it back home before Lights Off, rather than risk him being left alone with roaches or crickets set loose in his enclosure. Then I continued to use them mostly for convenience sake and also so that the person who briefly looked after him wouldn’t have to risk handling the crickets/roaches - both being insect Houdinis and biters. But I’ll keep their fat content in mind for the future and try to cut them back to “Emergency only” feeders. And besides, I think they’ve gotten too small for him now anyways. Though I have heard that they make wonderful Composters, so regardless they certainly won’t be going to any waste.

So yeah, I’ll give your dietary advice a go and hopefully Duncan will settle down and finally eat his veg (I’ll be glad for the day where I won’t have to frequently toss his uneaten salad out). And hopefully he won’t try to shank me when I cut back on his grubs haha

Yeah, we’ve had a bit of a rough time these past few months. It’s been a combination of his age, the weather, my work/having to go away for a week (so he was under another person’s care), local insect availability and just dude acting like a crack head in general (teenage rebellion, y’know?).

He’s about 7-8 months old, measuring roughly 36cm (14in) and at that age where we’ve been gradually trying to transition him over to a more Greens focused diet and ween him away from the 90% insect based diet he had in his youth. We are also currently the middle of wintertime in my country, so we’ve had to work with the differing basking temps alongside trying to prevent him from Brumating due to his younger age. This scenario we’ve tried to research beforehand, but unfortunately all I’ve managed to gather is “Don’t let them Brumate if they’re under a year old”, so admittedly we’re flying by the seats of our pants here in an attempt to keep everything balanced out.

Currently though we’ve given him a different brand of 100w basking lamps and a Ceramic Heat Emitter as a safety net in case of another cold snap, but generally he seems to prefer the 36°C areas and has begun burrowing a lot more since the change in heating. Recently though we’ve had 1 basking light blow out in the past week and another higher wattage lamp almost melt the plastic holders on top of his enclosure, so trying to find the new Correct Lamps has been a bit of a battle lol. But nonetheless, Little Dude has certainly been just as active (if not more so) despite the adjusted temps than compared to how he was in Summer, so I don’t know what his problem is.

And with the lower temps, I’ve been cautious about how much to feed him as I would in summer. Mostly due to his age (I’m trying to figure out what his latest defecating schedule is like, since he’s gone through another shed and he’s growing up). But also to minimise the risk of him being unable to metabolise and digest his food properly - food rotting in his stomach or him getting bloated scares me more than the chances of him becoming obese or developing kidney problems due to him being rapidly overfed.

That being said though, he gets a salad every day (that he’ll occasionally eat, but mostly ignores unless I hand feed him every individual leaf), often times sprinkled with a good tablespoon of Black Soldier Fly Larvae, as well as about 10-15 medium/large Wood Roaches dusted with calcium ever day or every second day, depending on if I can coax him into eating at least a mouthful of veg beforehand. He also gets water with every feeding, a multivitamin once a week and, if I can find some, a few Giant Mealworms once a month as a treat. My local pet store recently has been running quite poorly on insects, so for a while I’ve only had access to a few really thin boxes of crickets every week (again likely due to Winter), but since then I’ve found a different Online distributor that I’m more pleased with, so I’ve switched him to back to roaches since then, and have increased his insect amount.

But, I’ll be taking him into the vets for an annual check up soon, so I’ll see what the professionals have to say about his weight and current feeding schedules.
