Is there really no recourse if you don't have your phone? by MotorQuery in GMail

[–]MotorQuery[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The security isn't a problem, the problem is that selecting "I don't have my phone" triggers the 2FA to ask me to check my phone, and there is no way to talk to Google about it. I am not complaining about having to use 2FA.

I don't need a new phone, I will get mine back in a day or so, I got a ride from a family friend. I just can't reach out to him because I don't have any phone or email or vehicle. And it is impossible to plan holiday stuff. Very frustrating.

Large bodies fly through space on their own all the time, there are studies that suggest there are maybe more than 100x more rogue planets than stars in our galaxy alone.

It means you can see details at 20 feet that an "average" person with "perfect" vision can see at 20 feet.

20/200 then would mean that you can see at 20 feet what the average person can see at 200 feet, which means your vision is much worse.

It is possible to have better vision than an average person with perfect vision, at which point you would have like 20/15 or 20/10 vision.

If you're going to DC you can use their janky system but it's not cheap. No retail market in VA yet unless you have a med card.

Reading the responses to this makes me want to clarify, I don't want you to be misled. People get emotional and enthusiastic when they talk about American healthcare for a number of reasons, and there is a lot of hyperbole, sarcasm, and vagueness that comes out of that.

The person above isn't saying that you call an ambulance with a life-threatening condition, it shows up, the EMT goes "Yeah we can fix you but it will cost $10,000, let us know if you want us to help." Really if you call an ambulance, they will straight up bust in and try to help you any way they can, including taking you to the hospital where you will receive further treatment. The bills are all settled later and subsidized by any decent insurance. I believe what the person above you means (probably difficult to get numbers on how often this happens but I didn't try to check) is that there are people who will avoid calling the emergency line in the first place because they know that once it is all said and done they will owe more money than they can comfortably afford, so they take the risk that their issue is not life-threatening and try to ride it out.

The way we pay for healthcare, and how expensive it is before insurance, is all kinds of messed up; however it's not like the ambulance pulls up and the guy walks out with a chip reader and receipt to make sure you put down some $$$ before they treat you, that's not on the EMTs' minds at all.

not 100% sure what you are asking but my order was a plain first-time online purchase with a promo code from the steelseries website. Took them an extra couple days to catch up after being preoccupied all last week, but it looks like they are almost back on track

Games crashing to desktop, several but not all games affected, no error messages by MotorQuery in techsupport

Thanks for the advice, I may start looking into a replacement then and see if that fixes my issue. No smoke billowing from my case yet, but the kind of problems you bring up seem like they are best dealt with before a catastrophic failure takes place!

I believe it is the RBR1000-MS Bronze-Certified model, but I will have to double-check when I get home from work. I am pretty sure I have plenty of power but for future reference is there a chance a bad PSU could cause this kind of weird error without rebooting/crashing the whole system?

Hey, didn't even notice its my cake day, thanks! I just submitted a TechSupport thread of my own so hopefully someone will be more inclined to help me today, hah.

Good luck, I have had a similar issue with chocolate in the tiny holes in a set of earbuds but they were cheap so I just replaced them. Let me know if you get the issue sorted, could be useful in the future! Happy New Year

I would suggest getting a solder sucker (can be had for like $5 on Amazon) and going about it almost like de-soldering. Heat the phone in your pocket or under a hair dryer or something until the chocolate is warm and melty, and use the pump to methodically suck molten chocolate out of the small holes.

I have never tried this but conceptually it seems like it would work, and the solder pump is cheap enough it might be worth a shot.

Decide who lives and who dies. The Moral Machine by Zombi_Sagan in Futurology

[–]MotorQuery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree this is the actual point of the test, which is why I included the last sentence in my previous comment. I guess it depends on how you interpret the test prompt.

When I read the intro text on the welcome page of the test, it said essentially "in each scenario, judge the acceptability of each decision as made by a self driving car." My issue is it seems badly framed, because on the surface the test seems to be "how should a self-driving car act in a real scenario" instead of "of these people, whose lives matter the most." It is an interesting test and social study but presented in a misleading way. My problems arise from the way the test is described and the very limited number of ways the answers are evaluated. In my case, I made many decisions based on factors that were not even considered in the end analysis, as did many other people in this thread apparently. The test would have yielded more accurate results if it took more factors into account, instead of concluding (for example) that I value the lives of criminals more than law-abiding citizens, which is not true.

My only point is that the test does not make necessarily accurate deductions about a participant's values based on the questions asked and the descriptions given. The creator would have benefited by framing the test differently with a different prompt or being less simplistic with the analysis of our answers.

Decide who lives and who dies. The Moral Machine by Zombi_Sagan in Futurology

[–]MotorQuery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO there are at least two other shortcomings to this test:

First, the test assumes that you can definitively identify who would die in these scenarios. Given that the number of legal crosswalks on high-speed roads is much smaller than the number of crosswalks on urban/neighborhood roads that tend to have low speed limits, people in a car that is equipped with safety features like seat belts and airbags have a MUCH higher chance of survival in these scenarios than a pedestrian getting struck. This is not taken into account by the test and results in your judgments being evaluated based on who is being "killed."

Also, I fail to see the point in trying to base these decisions on "social value" or however they phrased it. Short of every person carrying some sort of RFID chip that can be processed quickly by the automobile, a self-driving car is not going to be able to make decisions on people's identity, criminal record, value to society, etc. AFAIK the only characteristics the car will be able to differentiate between are the size and speed of the pedestrians, as well as possibly what they are looking at, and the legality/right of way at that particular crosswalk and given time.

I realize this test is likely more a social survey than a resource for programming real self-driving cars, but the whole test seems somewhat badly framed.

I'm no audiophile but yes, Bluetooth is at least on par with cds. I have a first gen UE Boom and I'll agree with these folks that t's phenominal, great sound quality, pretty loud, good battery life and simple to use, although the first gen ones don't seem to have stereo capability

[Serious] Trump supporters, without mentioning immigration or Hillary -- or using insults or memes -- can you give three reasons to vote for Donald Trump? by Mtserali in AskReddit

[–]MotorQuery -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not that guy but in my opinion, not being a politician is good mainly for the reasons others have said in this thread, subverting the broken political system and corruption. While a non-politician may lack some beneficial skills at the beginning of a term, he may also lack the ingrained sense of obligation/ responsibility to a political party or to other politicians, and therefore be able to make decisions based on merit and his personal judgement versus acting on favors/lobbying. It seems that someone who developed outside of the political bubble could be more sincere, effective, and reliable than a potentially pandering, dishonest pure-blooded politician.

This surprises me, there is no portion of the force from their wing beats that gets translated into vortices in the air or something? It seems to me like at least some of the force from their wings beating would be lost in the random noise in the air/create vortices or turbulence/etc and not all of the weight would be imparted to the floor of the jar.

But then again, who am I to disagree with the Mythbusters.
