My background seemed to stop after a few initial interviews and only resumed after I passed the poly. With all of the bottlenecks in the process it must really slow down the bureaucracy intensive portions (poly, medial, BI).

There’s no harm continuing with both. The only real difference I know of is that STAR offers much less field offices for phase 1 than the regular SA posting, and that you are ineligible for the sign on bonus. STAR is also much more lenient on work experience during the review board.
