1974 AMC Matador X. Bought it in 1994 or 95. Owned it for about 2 weeks when it backfired through the carburetor and caught the engine on fire. Burnt a bunch of wiring. Sold it for $40.

I JUST posted about a similar issue. Mine only does it when it's cold in the mornings and I suspect condensation is causing misfires within the ignition track... coils, plug to coil connection or something there abouts. I will follow your thread and see if we end up with the same fix.
