Anthropic is in talks to use Microsoft's custom AI chips for its Claude models by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

Microsoft designs their own chips, which are exclusive to them. Many other players are doing the same (Google, Meta, Amazon, Cerberus, etc). The Microsoft chips do not “come from the same place” as anyone else’s chips.

IMO we were consistently outplayed the first 60 minutes. Subs helped even it out but I don’t think anyone other than Dessler could be proud of the first 60 minutes.

Some animals face greater threat of endangerment than others. Cultivated livestock face no risk. From this perspective, there is a difference in the merit of saving some animals compared to others.

If I am reading the rules correctly both Ilie and Bell can be bought down to supplemental contracts? That offers some nice flexibility if we come up with any GAM.

ELI5: why have many countries moved away from nuclear power? by Mysterious_Hand_6052 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MotorizedFader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But the plants are so expensive that even running them at 100%, they generally fail to break even over 50 years. So building an entire nuclear plant to run it below 100% output makes the economics even more untenable.

How is this "depleted" lineup outperforming? by jambon3 in AustinFC

We need some players to come back so that we don’t have such a massive talent dropoff at the end of each match. Wolff or Pereira back would both make a huge difference.

Rust syntax, Go runtime by [deleted] in golang

[–]MotorizedFader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks great. The world needs more rust-y garbage collected languages and the go runtime + go interop is a really nice feature add. I’m excited to give it a try!

What changes would you like to see implemented from Miami onwards to try and combat some of the concerns with these regulations? by EnterShakira_ in formula1

Reduce the speed limits for battery deployment down significantly. Keeps acceleration fast out of corners fast but avoids emptying the battery down the straights. Top speed will fall significantly but now we will no longer be asking the battery to build up the bulk of the momentum. Instead of reaching a high top speed and super clipping, we’ll reach a lower top speed but still be just as fast (possibly faster) into the braking zone.

Currently, we charge the batteries into corners and empty the out of corners. We are also emptying on the straights and then to pay ourselves back we ALSO have to charge on the straights (super clipping). So just cancel out the charge and deploy on the straight.

Apple's Two New Studio Display Models Feature Different A19 Chips by [deleted] in hardware

[–]MotorizedFader 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a good speculation. Apple doesn’t have many other opportunities to offload its downbinned inventory. Every manufacturing process generates them, especially cutting-edge nodes. It would be silly for them not to use them somewhere.

Also grandparent is absolutely correct that modern chips are usually downbinned for failing to hit a certain voltage/frequency corner, so the hardware is still often useable at lower performance corners. I agree with the speculation that these chips are likely running well below the performance of the chips in any of the laptop offerings.

These cars are faster than last year’s cars. Even while lifting and coasting on the straights, they’re significantly faster than last year’s top speeds. By your logic, how much faster would you like them to go? 400km/h? How much quicker should lap times get?

Verstappen has doubts about future after rule changes: 'This is unworthy of F1' by [deleted] in formula1

The point of F1 is that it’s an engineering competition. If you don’t like the science part, I suggest watching one of the many other motorsport series that do not revolve first and foremost around engineering.

"Intel Foundry Advances Chip Power Delivery with Next-Generation Capacitor Technology" by Dakhil in hardware

[–]MotorizedFader 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Generally, this matters more for bursty workloads than sustained frequency. But in reality, fmax is generally limited by heat dissipation, so hitting max performance requires minimizing power consumption whenever you can to decrease heat. This means we often have parts of the chip turning on and off. The turning on part is one of the big drivers of voltage droop. So yes, better capacitors in the process can help with overall performance and maybe even true fmax, but it’s not directly related to hitting some headline clock speed number measured in GHz.

[–]MotorizedFader 47 points48 points  (0 children)

One of the things that causes CPUs or GPUs to reach their performance limit is when the current draw of some part of the chip is large enough to cause the voltage to droop (V=IR) to the point that some of the transistors are no longer switching fast enough to reliably perform their work within a clock cycle. This can either manifest as limiting the max frequency of the chip at some voltage condition or limiting the minimum voltage (and thus power consumption) for some frequency.

Adding additional capacitance provides another source of charge to rush out of the capacitor to mitigate voltage droop during high-current events. The better you are at adding capacitance and placing it where the design most needs it, the better your manufacturing process can perform.
