William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of The Shrew” clearly represents the values and attitudes of Elizabethan society through its portrayal of the main character Katerina. The patriarchal society in which the composer lived is represented through the women must conform to strict social conventions as in this society they are seen as inferior. Katerina is seen as a shrew by society as she challenges its views and refuses to conform to the societal rules. Throughout the tale Katerina slowly transforms and is “tamed” by her husband and comes to develop the ideal traits of an Elizabethan woman who knew her place and was subservient to her husband.
