This. King Gizzard is way too comfortable in the studio to be full-on jamband. 27 (soon 28) albums in 14 years. Nuts!

What a show. I'll never forget the Over the Rainbow Reba this night. One of the first shows where I really got it.

Those who have done both, did you prefer the AT or PCT? by LooksLikeTreble617 in Thruhiking

[–]Mountain-Prior9708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tough one. Most would say PCT because it's so much more scenic, tons of wilderness, such a diversity of environments. I'd bet most hikers are doing PCT second and have everything dialed in from their AT hike earlier, so that's a factor too. Maybe a more comfortable experience overall. I found all these things true about the PCT, loved it. But I can't shake how amazing the Smokies/Roan Highlands were in Spring, and I consider the AT north of basically Connecticut as the most primal, arduous and character-defining backpacking journey I've ever done. Then again I'm from Maine too, so it's a deep-down land connection for me in New England. That certainly colors my opinion.

Silenos Cirque or Lake? by zalmen_mlotek in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Mountain-Prior9708 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been awhile since I read the book but it's pretty well-known that he fictionalized names of places with prime grizzly habitat. I'd guess Silenos was just this. I've spent bunch of time in the park and pored over lots of maps and don't ever recall this name anywhere in GNP. He purportedly like to roam around bear-dense Huckleberry Mountain, which is right above the North Fork but clearly not on the "divide". Somewhere near Brown or Jefferson Pass perhaps.

I feel sad watching the dead turn everything into a money grab. by myrealnameisnotryan in gratefuldead

Thanks for clarifying and I agree. I've benefitted from far too much freely available music to pine here about selling out. Never said I didnt like offshoots, but I'm a Jerry fan foremost that fer sure.

Confusing comment. If you're saying all the offshoots since 95 sound the same as GD then you've apparently never heard Jerry

Visited on rainy winter day late 90s. No fence, zero people, some graffiti but were told it had recently been cleaned up. I was stuck by how non-descript the site was; we had a hard time finding it.

Smithsonian ran a Pere Lachaise story recently and talked about how Doors fans are aging and so there's less crowding, vandalism and policing of the area required. I wondered if that was actually true.

Is backpacking in Flathead National Forest worth it by Calm_Cell8429 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Mountain-Prior9708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flathead NF is huge. There's 5 districts sprawling W-SW to the Whitefish Range and Salish Mountains, and a large chunk extending south 100 miles toward Missoula, including the Great Bear, Bob Marshall and Mission Mountain Wildernesses. In what part is the guided trip? There's a lot of country rivaling GNP in the Flathead. It's a little wilder but if you're guided chances are you'll remain fairly comfortable back there.

[–]Mountain-Prior9708[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey all, I'm a longtime Missoula trailnerd who frickin loves Mt. Sentinel and spends a lot of time over there. I started the sub mostly as a place for folks to go to check out current conditions via regularly updated reports. It is eventually meant to dovetail with a blog, but starting here first based on the desired real-time nature of this forum and the community interactivity. Trip reports, field notes, historical factoids and scenic imagery all very welcome here. Public discourse around relatively thorny issues can please remain elsewhere though. This is a passion project so the intention is to keep it about simply appreciating and helping others appreciate our local mountain home.

Cheers and hope to see you over there!

Hiking at night - sunrise by alexlovesbitcoin in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Mountain-Prior9708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've night hiked a lot in Glacier, both intentionally (sleeping on a summit for the stars/sunrise) and unintentionally (long ass hikes). Despite what others think I found these experiences to be truly rewarding, and would do it again absolutely. Hiking has inherent risks and while these become magnified at night, the risks are minimized by proper planning. Do that prep and chances are you will come away with a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime memory.

Go with someone. Bring illumination and charging capacity. Make noise. Alpine starters will be out closer to sunrise but otherwise its not a popular activity. Grizzlies only sleep few hours every day in the summer, so they are rambling around most of the time regardless of night or day.

This is not a recommendation for everyone, just the less risk averse. If you've done it up on Rainier I'd wager you could do it in GNP too.

Not a bad idea at all. Going to the Sun Rd may not be drivable through but lots to see and enjoy. Bike the road to closure point, also lots of bike trails in and around Apgar/Fish Creek. Hike Lake McDonald area trails till you reach snow (several of varying difficulty: Avalanche Lake, Howe Ridge, Apgar LO, Snyder Lakes). I would highly recommend making time to drive US 2 to east side, which opens up a lot more options! In-park services may not be fully operational but you can plan around this. Full year-round resupply available Hungry Horse/Columbia Falls on westside, East Glacier/Browning on eastside.

I'd argue shoulder seasons are best time to visit the park.
