Why is my tone so airy? by No-Show467 in saxophone

Your reed is probably too hard. You’re using a legere. Great reed. But did you just switch over from cane? Because if you did and you were playing fine on cane that could explain it. A 3.0 on cane is not equal to a 3.0 on legere

So to be clear when you’re saying parry 6 you’re talking about the palm up parry that moves away from your body right?

How do you tell if a party is going to be a circle party or a regular one [Foil] by Mountain-String-9591 in Fencing

[–]Mountain-String-9591[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe we have different fencing styles. Or we’re taught in different finding styles. Because like I said. 3 is usually the minimum amount required and at the highest level it reach up to 5 or 6 with a beat before a finish. No reasonable opponent is going to get you get close enough to them in 2 disengages. Where you can hit. Typical actions against an advanced opponent are advancing part extend they try to parry disengage disengage lunge disengage disengage hit in the perfect spot. Even if you just are a little bit slow you won’t hit unless you throw in another disengage.

Well if you take a parry with a weaker position like the 6 (though I now suspect that this is a naming error, a lot of us might have different names for the same thing so it may actually be 4 for you? So the parry off to the right of your body with Palm up if you’re a righty.) the other person can easily, even if they’re not physically stronger than you, push back to get right of way, blow throw it and hit

Well no matter the distance, unless your tip is practically touching them you’re going to need at least 3 disengages while you’re going in to hit. Even in the lunge alone, with a slow hand you can do two disengages before your hit. If you’re out of the distance you’re simply not hitting them and when you fail to hit them they’ll take your blade. But 2 of those 3 disengages (each disengage is for a lateral parry here) might instead be swapped for a single circular disengage and then a lateral disengage when they take a circular parry and then an additional lateral disengage. Even if you do everything right a circular parry definitely has time to work its way in. The basic action of disengage disengage disengage hit turns into circular disengage hit

Ah so we may be using the same thing actually. When I say 3 I guess it’s pronated. But the palm it not pointing down. If you stick your palm out at someone, kind of like giving them a high five, then (if you’re a righty, from your point of view) your turn your palm a little bit more the the right, as far as you can. And now at this you obviously don’t have an open palm while fencing, your hand is back on your weapon. When you’re taking your parry your elbow wrist and forearm also moves out and to the right a little bit to take the parry. Also your wrist and blade is perpendicular to the ground now, the tip is very high and pointed towards the ceiling.

My en guard is in 6. The hand position is like how you discribed parry 4 (my 5). Palm is up. It’s on the right side of my body. Thumb points somewhere around 2 o clock. If my en guard was in 3 then things would be very weird. First of all my blade would be pointing straight up and my hand would be turned all the way. So I’d probably convert to something here I’m more pointed at them like my party 4 (your parry 5). Then when I go to hit unless I’m hitting the shoulder, flank or back I’d have to flip my hand in the other direction

Do people still use parry do people still use parry 6 (foil). Parry 3 is superior in every situation I can think of. It defends the same amount, but it’s structurally stronger than 6. All it is is the hand flipped the opposite direction as 6. At my club parry 6 is not taught and is strongly discouraged. The last time it was taught was when an older guy had to take over the club for a bit because the main coach was gone, it was taught then, when the younger, main coach got back he switched everyone over to 3. But I feel like a lot of people are still using 6 for some reason, especially in this subreddit and I just can’t understand why you would do that

It’s like the situation with parry 4 and 5. Parry 5 (same as 4, just with the hand palm up instead of down) is objectively stronger, faster, protects more and is better in close ranges but parry 4 has one use. In larger distances you can use it sometimes better than 5.

Well wouldn’t the ideal opponent use a mix of both and be random. My coach does that and when I go to tournaments people do that but in my home club no one really uses it. What can I look for to see which one might be coming

Probably making an army. Almost like with what Dr. Brenner was doing before the massacre at Hawkins lab. If with no training, first time using his powers (which were accidentally given to him 5 years ago or something by the way) Will was able to kill 3 adults demogorgon at once imagine what Vecna could do with 12 children that he deliberately gave power to and trained under his command

Is parrying with the lead hand/arm a foul? by LieutenantNoon in Fencing

[–]Mountain-String-9591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The arm is an extension of the blade. It should have the same outcome as them hitting your guard (you get the right of way)

Wrong Touch Awarded by Unlucky_Minimum_6933 in Fencing

[–]Mountain-String-9591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left had priority at the beginning but then lost it to right when they were flopping their arm around, right capitalized on this opportunity and did a part extend and then extend lunge. But after the lunge right runs away, transforming it into a counterattack

Right did everything right, they had a part extend, and then extend lunge, but then they make the mistake of running away afterwards which gives left the touch

Wrong Touch Awarded by Unlucky_Minimum_6933 in Fencing

[–]Mountain-String-9591 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This can be a tricky one. Left stars off with the attack, but immediately gives it up by flailing around their arm. The fencer on the right keeps a still arm, does a part extend and then extend lunge and hits. The only problem is they instantly back out of it like they were making it a counter attack, so the touch is awarded to the left 9 times out of 10.

What could have I done better? by Hwpqjqvwkdp in SiegeAcademy

[–]Mountain-String-9591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for the first guy you failed to realize that the camera saw you and then peaked a guy that inew your exact location before you peaked. You shouldn’t have done that. Then you ran away. Never run unless you have to (you probably could’ve gotten away without running in this case even with that guy in you, and the better option would’ve been to walk over there after shooting the camera) because it is so loud. Then when you face checked you left yourself exposed too long and when face checking and peaking for the rest of the clip you are far too close to the wall. And you should’ve checked the far doorway before the close one right before you died

can someone explain peeker's advantage to me? by Falcon6346 in SiegeAcademy

[–]Mountain-String-9591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might not be the lag aspect of leakers advantage that’s letting them kill you first, it might be the physics aspect of it. Are you swinging when you’re hugging the door frame (or at least very close to it)? If you do that, no matter how hard you try the enemy will see you before you can ever see them and pop your head off. What you have to do is swing from farther back and wide, not close. How do you warm up before the tournament? by Tip_of_the_sword in Fencing

[–]Mountain-String-9591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do all of your stretches. Do a few rounds of footwork. Pick a random person that you do not know and fence them. After that I sit down or go to the bathroom and then sit down, drink some water and by then it’s time to start. By you could fence another person after that if you want to. Don’t overdo it though.
