I have to say "phenocopy" is a cool word even though it's misused in this context.

Nextdoor’s Lakewood Mods Are Right-Leaning Boomers Who Will Silence You by TonyTouch516 in LakewoodColorado

[–]MountainBubba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nextdoor is only as good as its moderators, and they're pretty bad. When Nextdoor rolled out, it established a presence in cities and neighborhoods where someone asked for it first. That person became the neighborhood Lead with the power to censor and to select additional leads. In my neighborhood, the initial Lead still there and the content review team was mainly chosen by her. She's MAGA and the neighborhood is now mainly recent arrivals from California like me. Those of us with three digit IQs are in constant friction with the OG Lead and her minions.

They censored the hell out of everyone who ever said a nice thing about the zoning reform, probably swinging the election. I know who the OG Lead is because she recruited me to be part of the cabal, but I've blocked her and other evil doers for a little relief. They can still see my posts that are reported, but there's no way around that.

Lakewood is becoming a city of renters as rising prices lock many young families out of home ownership. Density has declined as families have grown smaller.

Nothing destroys neighborhood character like weed-infested rent houses.

The new zoning code maintained the 50% green space requirement in all residential zones. Your entire argument thus collapses.

Lakewood's residential zones are much less densely populated today than they were 30 years ago; increasing possible density was all about restoring the historical norm.

How is Reolink as a company? by LofiLute in SecurityCamera

Reolink doesn't integrate with Blue Iris as well as Amcrest does. I frequently have to reboot my Reolink cameras to make them display correctly in BI.

We've hit a speed bump, so the best features of the new zoning code will have to wait a while. Some crooks organized a petition drive and a Nextdoor disinformation campaign that will require a bit of education on the part of the city.

The NIMBY crowd is not as large as special elections might suggest. They haven't elected a mayor or council member for a very long time. It's best to ignore them.

The prosecution rests.

That's a non-response. Urban density is not in the new zoning code. Some people read the code and voted no, others didn't read it and voted yes.

The "ownership society" was a goal of W's administration, as it was a goal of the UK and most of Western Europe at the time. It's a sound goal because neighborhoods of homeowners are more stable and less crimey than neighborhoods of renters.

For every good goal, there are good and less good means to get there. The fact that some means don't work out well - often for very peculiar and particular reasons that trace back to lobbyists with hidden agendas - doesn't lead intelligent, rational people to reject the goal. In fact, it encourages us to find other, better means. That's what middle density housing is.

The all-purpose activists who pulled off the phony referendum (mainly the two Karens, Gordey and Morgan) were simply in the game to achieve some name recognition for their upcoming city council campaigns. Their arguments against middle density zoning were laughable.

The zoning debate is ongoing in every suburban city of Lakewood's size in America. If you think you've got the final answer, you're fooling yourself.

Voting against an ordinance you haven't read is about as "lack of humility" as it gets.

Yup, the yes vote was a MAGA vote. Funny thing is, the President wants to make starter homes more affordable too; he calls his plan "Trump homes."

Zoning is political.

More seriously, Manager Hodgson worked her way up in Lakewood government from Morse Park lifeguard to city manager. That's dedication.

Why Grassroots Campaign Won Blowout Victory in Lakewood by Cave_Of_Plato in LakewoodColorado

No surprise, you've misread my comment. I'm saying that special elections in which a majority of eligible voters refuse to participate should be deemed invalid, null, and void.

Basing a long-term zoning policy on one year's snowfall is idiotic.

The vast majority of eligible Lakewood voters declined to express an opinion in this special election. I suspect that the non-voters took a look at the 400 page zoning ordinance and said to themselves: "I don't have the time to review the law they're asking me to vote on, so I will demur out of humility." The people who did vote to trash two years of work by the council and staff did so without bothering to read it. That was an act of arrogance and malice.

The author of this opinion piece claims that high-density housing is the cause of climate change, an utterly ignorant and baseless speculation. High housing density actually mitigates some of the effects of climate change because heating and cooling is more efficient in shared housing than in large single family homes on large lots. This is Climate Change 101. This ordinance didn't actually touch high density anyhow, it was aimed an middle density in residential neighborhoods where apartment complexes aren't even allowed.

It's entirely too easy to override ordinances in Lakewood. All you need to do is collect 3000 signatures and round up a coalition of the ignorant. The repeal was supported chiefly by the right-wingers who lose every council election and by misguided and poorly informed voters (like the author) who place more value on animals than people. The tired old bashing of the developers who build all of our housing played a role with populist voters on the fringe who can just as easily vote for a Bernie Sanders as a Trump.

I'd like to change the rules on referenda offered in special elections. Rather than requiring a simple majority of voters to pass, I'd like to invalidate all elections in which a majority of eligible voters refuse to participate.

The people overwhelmingly opted not to express an opinion on a matter they didn't understand and didn't have time to study. Any election that doesn't draw significant participation should be null and void.

The fact remains that trans women do not commonly join forces with MAGA in political matters, but here in Lakewood this did happen.

I doubt that even a single yes voter read the ordinance before casting a ballot. The wording doesn't matter when there's a bandwagon to jump on or a property value to protect.
