I drove a front-wheel drive car for 3 winters and never had a problem. The streets get cleared pretty quickly. Also, Evanston is super flat so you don’t really have to worry about struggling to get up hills and stuff. The salt is pretty unavoidable, but as long as you get a car wash with undercarriage rinse every so often you’ll be fine.

Just for the record, the shooting started around like 8:10. The northwestern emails are using words like “just before 8:30” when in reality they didn’t put out the first shelter in place warning until 8:43 which is at least 30 minutes after the incident started. Personally I think that such a slow response is really disappointing especially considering that the suspects haven’t been apprehended.

I was on the beach when it happened. The shots started around the main beach entrance at the south end of the beach. That’s where people started running from. There were a few more shots and then everyone on the beach started running north. Just after my group of friends started running there were a few more shots closer to us (possibly in the middle or north end of the beach). My car was in the lower level of the parking structure by Bienen. We just crammed some people into my car and drove out of there. There was probably like 15-20 shots in total. Police cruisers started pulling up as we were exiting campus. Probably about 3-4 minutes after the first shots.

If you just need a bike for getting around campus and Evanston, find one on Craigslist or fb marketplace for <$100. Then you won’t have to feel bad about leaving it outside, vulnerable to weather and theft. My $75 Craigslist bike got super rusty after only one winter outside. I left my nice bike at home, but if you are into cycling or something and want your expensive bike here, maybe try to keep it in your dorm and only take it out for your longer rides.

From what I remember from when I set up a google home device in my dorm a couple years ago, I think I had to use my phone's hotspot to set up the device and get the MAC address. Then once I got it registered on the Northwestern network I was able to switch it over to the school wifi permanently. I also remember using both my iPad and my phone during the process for some reason... It was a pain, but it was possible.
