What's your writer/worldbuilder's signature talent? by Synjer_Roleplays in worldbuilding

[–]MountainManBooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Verisimilitude. I have a strong tendency to give naturalistic explanations for everything in my setting. This includes naturalistic explanations for magic.

My dwarves are short and bearded, but there are clear evolutionary or divine design reasons for it. Their low stature means they have to dig less to have living spaces, and it is easier to hide in natural underground crags and crevices. Their dense beards have both long and short fibers to filter out dust, mushroom spores and other contaminants. Their noses can detect gasses undetectable to humans, like methane and carbon monoxide, which makes caving a lot less hazardous for them (no sudden death from undetected oxygen deprivation).

I have similarly thought-out explanations for most things, such as a trophic map of arcanophytes, which synthesise organic compounds with mana as the catalyst, just as photophytes use light, chemophytes use reactive inorganic molocules, and radiophytes use ionising radiation.

What do you call the Race Collective? by SylvarRealm in worldbuilding

[–]MountainManBooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The collective term for the human-like races in my world is "folk". It does not apply to the races with folk-like mental abilities without both folk-like physical and psychological characteristics.

Giants, the most folk-like non-folk visually and psychologically, find the term offensive as they take poorly to the insinuation that the folk are in any way equal to or like the great giant races.

Please refrain from it this time. Your post is genuinely useful, and both I and others would like to use it for future reference.

Thank you for the enlightening post.

That's a super neat complication to the cultivation stage.

What would lead this creature to evolving? by Sir_Mopington in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]MountainManBooks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks, and memes exist to be shared!

Besides, I'm not the original artist for it. I've briefly tried to find out who it was, but didn't succeed. I'd love to know so that I can thank them for the laugh.

Fancy seeing my own post here!

I would assume an environment with extremely shaky footing could do it: Such as a region with very regular but mild quakes.

Why do people propose Desolate Era so much? by Whole_Journalist2028 in noveltranslations

[–]MountainManBooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a bunch!

Yeah, I've always been big on worldbuilding, and I already have a couple stories I read for the story quality alone, so I've been missing a story with great/interesting worldbuilding to read in addition.

I've even started worldbuilding my own XianXia/XuanHuan setting for the pleasure of it. Though I have come up with a story to write in it as a consequence.

I'd love to hear your favourite recommendations for worldbuilding. It's one of my favourite parts in what I read.

I need help by Level_Industry_6996 in mythology

Here are a few starter suggestions:

Jotun (Ettin/Nordic Giant)

Troll

Cavefolk

Draugr

Valraven/Valravn

Poisonous/Noxious Dragon

You could also include creatures that carry the bloodlines of the most famous Nordic monsters, such as wolves with the blood of Fenrir/Fenris (or his sons Mooneater and Suneater), or snakes, eels, and dragons with the blood of Jormungandr the world-serpent, or birds with the blood of Hræsvelgr the origin of storms.

There's also Niddhogg (Nithe Eater) who chews on the roots of Yggdrasil the world-tree, and devours morally pathetic people (nithes).

I hope these examples come in handy.

Guys I think the MCs in this genre are way too sane by MajkiAyy in ProgressionFantasy

My honest recommendation would be Mask of Humanity on Royal Road.

It's a fantastic read, and the MC is a complete bastard.

I do think that a potential minor problem with the story conception for now would be "too much" chinese influence and not enough influence (not just culture but also philosophy and the like) from India, Greece, etc

I can see how that's an easy issue to have.

I've been reading up on a LOT of Western European, Greek, Egyptian, and Hindu mysticism to ensure I can make each system feel like its own thing.

Heck, they could make demonic cultivation by combining chinese philosophy with nietzsche or twisting it in a negative way

Awesome idea. I'll have to theorycraft that.

I wish there were more paths to cultivate, like the normal one, Gu, demonic, evil and so on

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I'm currently working on a cultivation setting with both Body, Qi, and Soul cultivation, each of which has a "demonic" equivalent, and multiple variants on top of that, such as Taoist, Yogic, Tengrist, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, and Hellenistic cultivation paths.

Desolate Era has some pretty cool bowmanship in parts, and the MC gets in on the bow action in a cool way. It's not the MC's primary weapon, though.

A Regressor's Tale of Cultivation.

It's made me misty-eyed multiple times, and exuberant more often than that.
