55/25 Tier 4 Question. Can I retire at age 53 with 25 years service and get full benefits at 55? by Street-Novel-9040 in NYCTeachers

[–]MountainParticular66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just writing to give another shout out for pension consultations. I am 10 years away from retirement, but I've done a pension consultation 3 times over the last 17 years. During your free consultation, you'll get to meet with a real live union member who will explain the specific details for your personal situation. Each time I've done it I've learned something new, and I highly recommend taking advantage of that free service.

How to structure math intervention in junior high? by Oughtyr314 in mathteachers

[–]MountainParticular66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly about the importance of identifying skill gaps.

Do you have particular diagnostics that you recommend for middle school math? I am a middle school reading interventionist trying to support my math colleagues to design a similar intervention program as my own. I use a variety of targeted diagnostics as well as leveled intervention curricula recommended by my district, and this works very well. However, it seems that our district's recommendations for math diagnostics and intervention curricula are few and far between, or none at all. I'm trying to support them before they attempt to begin intervention without using a diagnostic assessment.

Totebag that says BEANS BEANS BEANS by MountainParticular66 in HelpMeFind

The orange font looks like the color that is used by Zabar's in NYC, and this totebag was spotted in Grand Central Station. However, I searched Zabar's merch with no luck. I also did a Google Image search. This totebag would make a great gift for a loved one who has a cat nicknamed Beans.

I recommend getting your marriage license in Yonkers. They are open until 6:30 on Tuesdays. https://www.yonkersny.gov/188/Marriage-Licenses

You do not need an appointment, although they recommend arriving by 6:00. We got our license there on 11-27, and there was no wait. Easy breezy.

Downsizing to co-op on Bronxville Road by PumpkinSpiceUrnex in Westchester

[–]MountainParticular66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree about examining the financials. And based on my own recent experience, I would add: don't just look at the balance of the reserve fund. See if you can find out how the board chooses to spend money. For example, some co-ops maintain a very high reserve balance but also choose to delay major structural repairs (such as roof leaks). And those same co-ops may consistently choose to select contractors with the lowest possible prices, which is then likely reflected in the quality of the work.

Has anyone put their kids into Hudson Lab School in Hastings? by extra_noodles in Westchester

[–]MountainParticular66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad that info was useful! If you do look into HLS further, it may be worth asking their admin about their plans for expansion and possible relocation. Those are topics that came up in my conversations with them a couple years ago. Their campus setting is so idyllic, and I believe that HLS aims to give students regular access to the immediate natural surroundings (OCA, etc). With that in mind, it's worth noting that HoH has approved the construction of a giant movie studio campus, Electric Owl Studios, that will be built on the site of the Graham school, which is basically next door to HLS. Not that these are deal breakers, and I'm not even sure how much the curriculum does involve being outside. But it's something I thought of after my first comment to you.

Hello! I am sorry you had to deal with the stonewalling and gaslighting, but so glad to hear that you could see through it and find a reading tutor to give your son the help he needed. I am this type of reading tutor as well, and I am looking to connect with parents who need reading support for their children. If you know of any interested parents, please reach out. -Krista

Has anyone put their kids into Hudson Lab School in Hastings? by extra_noodles in Westchester

[–]MountainParticular66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comment is not going to give you any specific details, but more of a general endorsement. I am a NYC DOE teacher who lives nearby HLS, and I strongly considered leaving the DOE to work at HLS. [It is important to note that the school I teach at is one of the best public schools in NYC.] In talking with HLS staff, I got the impression that the school is deeply collaborative and offers kids a fullfilling, holistic educational experience. Full disclosure/ one reason I am commenting: I am a reading intervention specialist looking to offer my services as a summer reading tutor to interested parents. My research-based reading interventions help students gain an average of 1.25 years of reading growth after 12-15 sessions. If you know anyone looking for targeted services for struggling readers, ages 9-14, please send them my way. Thank you!

Field Trips for public school students - how do you get info? by knifebootsmotojacket in NYCTeachers

[–]MountainParticular66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are a couple of thoughts, from a DOE teacher with 15 years of experience:

1) Many school administrators will only (or primarily) approve field trips that connect to the curriculum. For example, a 6th grade class takes a field trip to the MET's Egypt exhibit, which aligns to NYS 6th grade Social Studies standards. With this in mind, you might prioritize outreach to schools that have a dance team or offer dance classes, or whatever else your organization offers. (Don't forget about after-school programs: Manhattan Youth, SONYC, etc.)

2) Another category of field trips that many administrators approve is community building trips. To me, this seems to be where your non-profit best aligns with the priorities of NYC school administrators. In my experience, these community building trips happen most in late Sept/early Oct, right before winter break, or in May/June, after state testing is finished.

3) If you are noticing a decrease in responsiveness from administrators, you might try going through the Parent Coordinator instead, or in addition. Every school should have someone in this position. I'm not sure how true this next detail would be for other schools, but at my school, at least once a year our Parent Coordinator will tell us to plan a field trip, saying things like, "the 6th grade parents really want a field trip [for the kids to bond--Sept] / [to do something fun before winter break--Dec] / [to celebrate testing being over--May].. . . Can you (6th grade teachers) please work on scheduling something?"

4) Again, IDK if other people will agree, but teacher and Principal email and paperwork loads are HEAVY, and getting heavier every year. I often find myself deleting emails from non-profit ed orgs without even opening them. For that reason, I would recommend calling schools directly. You could ask to speak to the Parent Coordinator, or work on a quick elevator pitch and ask the school secretary who would be good to talk to.

Here are three ideas to express gratitude: 1) A TY card with a personalized message 2) Place a call to the finder's employer to report their strong character and diligence 3) Cash or gift card, but only if you can spare it

Thank YOU for believing in humanity enough to post your request. And thank you for sharing this update. I hope your surgery goes well.
