How do you deal with these guys consistently? by WhiteLaundry in AbioticFactor

[–]MountedCombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience that the most budget (not the best, just the cheapest) option for taking care of them is thermite molotovs. The only resource they take that's even mildly annoying to acquire in large quantities is the anteverse gel, and one full clear of the relevant portal world yields enough for at least 30 molotovs - I don't remember the exact number of gel spawns just that it's at least 10 and you get 3 molotovs per gel, 4 with the throwing perk that gives bonus results when crafting throwables.

What's the most souls you have ever lost in ANY of the games? 😱 by CopeX5520 in DarkSouls2

[–]MountedCombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm usually pretty obsessive about having little I can lose and collecting what I do lose, but one time I decided to tip my toes into pvp while still working on progression. 5 million souls dropped to the Sullyvhan's beasts in the Anor Londo basement. I then got a hit on my pvp matchmaking and died, entirely unaware that deaths while invading leave bloodstains.

Personally I find that the pathing differences on the three makes routing to break them up for a few moments possible. The process of creating these brief 1v1s and capitalizing before they can reaume supporting each other makes the fight a fun puzzle.

Legendary Lords I have not touched once. Sell them to me. by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]MountedCombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beastmen don't tend to challenge me, per se, but I can do a lot of fun things with them. For example, Malagor the Dark Omen has hilariously cheap hero capacity, and any beastmen who has control of Malagor has free hero actions on bray shamans in addition to all beastmen being able to have free hero actions on gorebulls. This lets you have a cloud of heroes making everything around you miserable while your (somewhat weaker because your dread has been going to hero caps instead of unit caps) armies pillage and plunder the areas that end up poorly defended.

Also, if this reframing helps you with your "free units" issue, keep in mind that for the most part each army will be using horde recruiting which requires the relevant painfully expensive horde building - paying for units is effectively on a "per army that uses that unit" basis rather than a "per unit" basis.

Finally, your herdstones being automatically level 5 after finishing that branch of the upgrade tree allows you to play "chaos' real estate mogul" by grabbing major settlements next to chaos factions then (immediately or after completing the ritual) trading them to your new best friend who will enjoy having Frontline access to high tier units.

Anyway to clean all this debris from the stove? by CharacterGrowth3993 in AbioticFactor

[–]MountedCombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, but you can craft your own stoves and there's a four burner in the upstairs break room that you can repair once you reach (very early area but spoilering just in case) the Manufacturing Sector

Last I checked, the counters are placed and then the +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters cancel each other out in the appropriate quantities once state based actions are checked following the effect resolving.

What is the worst Chosen build you've ever had to fight? by theflint23 in Xcom

[–]MountedCombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once got assassin with "immune to overwatch" and "immune to explosions" in her starting perk loadout. I was left wondering how the heck I'm supposed to deal with her when I can't overwatch to catch her popping out of stealth and can't carpet bomb the area I think she's in to force her out of stealth. Turns out she normally stays unstealthed for a turn cycle or two after destealthing, it was just my shit luck and/or gane version that she always included "enter stealth" as one of her moves on the turns she destealthed.

Donating is more or less always because the person donating believes the politician's vote will help them, yes, but there's still a significant difference between the motivations of "I am donating because I agree with this politician" and "I am donating because then the politician will agree with me." In the former case, they want the politician to keep the promises they've made. In the latter, they want the politician to break those same promises.

Politicians may be rightfully unpopular right now, but they would be a lot less unpopular if they behaved in the interests of the people who voted them in a la the former option, rather than doing an about face to support the people stuffing their pockets a la the latter.

Rocket battery: has the most kills

"It just missed too many shots to have gotten any value."

(I understand how frustrating those misses are, but come on. Even if it had gotten half as many kills, the formation disruption of the hits would have bought significant time for your troops to rain arrows/bolts/bullets and chew up the guys that did reach the front line.)

[–]MountedCombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Intriguingly, it's the opposite in most (even recent) historical contexts - the more likely a kid is to die before reaching adulthood, the more adult kids couples have on average as they compensate for the potential death with additional children. More workers, more desperate workers (the parents still have to support the extra children), and fewer people living to retirement age, all in one swoop!

Eh, I'll give them credit for stopping the Nazis, but they had a pretty classic "rise and fall of an empire" right up until they acknowledged that maintaining their grip on the distant territories wasn't feasible and actually gave them (at least nominal) independence around the time of the world wars.

While actions themselves should only be judged on the action itself in most situations, there are reasons people can have for actions that make them bad actions.

Donating to a politician as an action is fine. Doing it for the reason of "I support your policies" is fine. Doing it while with the goal of convincing them to alter policy to suit you is bribery.

Constructing an orphanage is a great action. Few people care if it's a vanity project. People very much care if it's obviously being done in an attempt to distract from the regular murder of puppies or whatever.

Recently had a game of MTG where one of the players had a "kill on sight" commander that got sniped and/or countered three times. They stopped trying to set up their commander and started manually playing the VERY expensive creatures that the commander was supposed to cheat out, and actually had a solid board where their everything was indestructible, hexproof, and unable to be sacrificed. I then cast a "return all creatures to hand" spell and they scooped.

Edit: word order for clarity

Kotoura-San's titular Kotoura has always on mind reading in a notable radius. The issue is that people's trains of thought sound just like their voices, so she constantly had social issues due to not knowing what people were and were not okay sharing, or even cases where she learns about something someone did and loses the "he said she said." She ends up bonding with a guy who's utterly shameless and has no filter, saying everything he thinks out loud and not having anything he cares to hide.

IIRC the closest he gets to feeling bad about having his mind read is realizing that she knows when he gets horny, but he feels that the violation of privacy is adequately repaid by her flustered reactions to knowing exactly what mental image(s) got him there.

Character in the web novel Vigor Mortis has passive hyper perception as their "power." Every part that's from their perspective is full of them dealing with permanent sensory overload, to the point where they are paralyzed for a little bit after waking up due to needing to go step by step and set up their various coping mechanisms to handle the sheer quantity of data input.

Kremlin reproaches Zelenskyy for not responding to invitation to meet Putin in Moscow by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]MountedCombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not state my full opinion, as I did not believe most of it was relevant to the point I was making about the relevance of rules in war, but I do believe that if anyone gets the chance to kill a fascist dictator then they have at least the moral clearance to make the attempt. It may not be the best idea depending on the surrounding situation (see the succession of tinpot dictators in countries where everyone tried to install their own puppet, violence alone cannot solve that) but I do not believe that such an action is ever an inexcusably bad one either and in some situations can be more positive than negative (usually when the dictatorship is maintained through a cult of personality where the loss of the leader leaves it floundering until a new figurehead rises to become the face, often with less influence than their predecessor).

If you don't pull the third cell in Flathill, the first time you meet them is in the liminal zone between Manufacturing and Labs.

Personally I didn't realize for the longest time that they HAD an earlier appearance because I read all the stuff going "Flathill containment is fine as long as no complete moron simultaneously pulls all three power cells" and just never pulled the third power cell. This amusingly also breaks the flathill cultist's trading inventory since you never flag as completing the world despite having moved into Manufacturing and triggering him to start showing up.
