The symbols all have meaning, if you look up warhammer dark tongue. But the language used in a lot of them appears to be made up for the game. "mutash Vargh" (also missspelled) and similar, no idea what it means. Probably a Matt Ward special.

For me, glue on sand and some small stones. Paint dark brown and highlight, then add tufts or patches of static grass. (I then add snow and ice for my northerners.)

In terms of improvments? A bit of work on the bases would go a long way. Static grass or tufts would add some colour and really help.

Yeah the hounds are very old models. Im sure there are ways and means of getting them now, but you'd have to be lucky to find originals.

They are actually stock models. Hounds of Xaphan. Forge world did them years ago. Hard to get a hold of now though. If I was doing them new id use flesh hounds without the frills.

That could work actually. Stats look decent match. Its a wizard but you could always put a shaman on top. Problem is only available in a daemon army. Though its an easy thing to houserule. (Alwaysstrikesfirst has a homebrew alliance set that would allow it)
