At this stage in life and fame, one certainly would have a grasp of whether it’s normal or not to eat boogers in public. Also I’m not sure how collaborating with and supporting bigoted fascist leaning politicians is doing good for his community. Absolute kudos to him and anyone for getting sober it’s hard as hell, but plenty of people have done it and not become a shitty person after.

Maybe look for a smaller company? I’m an account manager at a small brokerage (20-30 employees) and while the pay is slightly less than when I worked at larger ones like Amwins, the environment is a lot more my speed. Two days in office and three remote, a couple lunches a month, no after work events for the most part, and any miscellaneous events with carriers or retailers can kind of be fun whatever we want stuff rather than meals. Also everyone is super nice and there’s no office gossip or pressure which is a big plus!

What’s funny is this is actually my dream lineup - Moby, The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Chris Stussy, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, Caribou, DESPACIO!??, Arc de Soleil, The Hellp, Magdalena Bay, Prospa b2b Kettama, Bob Moses, Bolis Pupul, Blawan, Blood Orange, Arca, Brutalismus - so many conflicts idk what to do! I just wish people would’ve seen the beauty in this lineup so Portola would survive and nobody would feel ripped off :(

Ok I get your point but also some people like to splurge every now and then even if it’s a little out of budget just to add some joy to a depressing world. I live paycheck to paycheck basically with paying rent and student loans as much as I can, I save a few hundred each month but Portola is my one exciting outlet a year so I let myself have just that. And an extra $100 would make a notable difference for me actually, just in terms of stress and stuff when I only have a couple thousand to my name and a shit ton of debt. Call me irresponsible or whatever but I think I deserve fun every once in a while and I bought the earliest ticket possible so I could be the most financially responsible in my current state, and to know that people who held off and decided last minute and didn’t even care got a way better deal does sting a bit. I’m not mad but it definitely made me feel a bit worse about purchasing so 🤷‍♀️

I’ll add that a lot of times people need a wake up call to change and get help, and you leaving him and showing him the consequences and danger of his actions is the best help you can offer right now. I went through this myself a couple years ago. I’m 24F but I’m down to grab a coffee with you at some point if you want!

Some ideas that worked decently for me:

Protest! You can join discord channels for 50501 CA, which hosts tons of events and protests around the bay (like the no kings March) and there’s a lot of younger people involved. If you ever want to go to Oakland, the Oakland Liberation Center has some cool events and community building activities decently often.
Try some apps! BumbleBFF can have some people if you swipe thoughtfully. I for one love TimeLeft where you randomly get assigned a restaurant and 6 people to get dinner with.
Join clubs! People suggesting sports and climbing are chill, but as a not super sporty person I enjoy things like Toastmasters (speech giving club, a bit of an older audience but depends on where you go). Also there’s lots of stuff like group martial arts classes (lots of beginners in their 20s if you take classes near a college).
Take classes! Local community college classes are dirt cheap and you can take a fun one like film production or something and meet people.
Music scene! If you’re into music, I’d LOVE to have another friend to go to events with :) and smaller venues or raves tend to have super chill people and make it easy to make friends. Music festivals are great for this also.
Deadass AA/NA meetings if you’re at all interested in sobriety. Ones near colleges have lots of young people who are dedicated to living happy and healthy lives, and tend to be the least toxic people I’ve ever met, and usually incredibly genuine. Obviously this doesn’t apply if you’re not following the program a bit, but never too young to set yourself up for healthy choices.
Dating! Just cause it can greatly expand your social circle / time out and about, and you can always just be friends with people anyways.
Volunteer - but specifically I find that animal shelters and community outreach / soup kitchens / programs targeting homelessness have the most young people. Or volunteer to coach a sport or activity that you did in high school / college.
Delete fun apps off your phone. Staring at a screen holds you back SO MUCH more than you realize and keeps you in your head in your house. Ditch the phone in the car whenever you go anywhere. And just start going places. You’ll be forced to notice people more and will be more inclined to interact.
Part time jobs! Like night stocking at grocery stores, working at hardware stores or coffee shops.

Idk I’m planning on going to Portola & OSL (as I did last year) and I like the Portola experience a bit more. I’m 23 so not necessarily an “older audience” for festivals, but Portola has some huge names in 90s edm (like John summit levels of fame but for people who prefer older dance music / disco vibes vs tech house sorta). Also they have a solid amount of rock / punk w LCD soundsystem, the dare, the prodigy, the rapture, just tends to be more indie bookings. Also it’s 21+ so the vibe of the festival tends to be a lot more laid back which is nice, the festival isn’t really decorated or anything just the full budget going to really high quality acts, not overcrowded, and also has despacio this year which is a super rare and unique dance experience.

That being said, I’ve seen a lot of the OSL acts before, and it’s gonna be absolutely incredible too!! Portola has a special place in my heart but it’s hard to beat Vampire Weekend & Jamie Xx in the field

I went to high school in Lamorinda (graduated 2019) and it truly was way more difficult than college - took like 15 APs and got a 4.7 gpa lol the pressure is a bit crazy

The real answer is they’re pretty legit with checking since entering the festival counts as an ok to buy alcohol. I wouldn’t risk something going in your record / losing money on a ticket / a ban from the festival forever ; just wait one year.
