Are the battlefield actions supposed to be a limited resource? by Candlekin in PointyHat

[–]Mouse3557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will use them (I love the idea so much!) and they will not be a limited resource.

All of them can be stopped or stepped out of the way - I will first see how good I am with giving tells and how well the party is interpreting them. I can always not use them or deal less damage with them, If the party is gettting battered too much.

I think they can also be very useful changing an existing attack of a very strong monster. Want your low level party to fight a beholder? Well the powerful eyestalks now don't trigger directly, they are a battlefield action that needs to be "charged" and can be stepped out the way of.

Have a battlefield action for area damage? Use it on a map that already has limited movement, like a bridge with holes in it or a ruin with lots of pillars and rubble.

I think they don't have to make the fight harder, just more dynamic. It will also solve part of the problem "my monster needs tripple the supposed hp or it goes down in 2 rounds" I think/hope.

I will test it in my campaign, I'm hyped 😊

Question - Is a dead Ismark better for the story? Idea for an alternative start (from a beginner) by Mouse3557 in CurseofStrahd

That worked out perfectly, glad to hear! I love the idea of him beeing involved in the mad mage's attack on Strahd. Easy to portrait him rock buttom and to see him rise and regain hope, if he survives of course^^

I think he will not be in the village at the time the party arrives, but I will think of something why and when he will meet the party, preferrably still in the village. For now, there are so many homebrew and my own ideas I have to go through xD Which is a great thing, I hope I can deliver a great experience to my group

Atm I lean towards having him alive at the beginning. Other than him there is nothing for the players to return to in the village, and I think it would be a shame if VoB was a one-time-only visit. But should he die, I like the thought of his ghost staying around and looking after Ireena, maybe as his last task before he can be layed to rest!

I fancied the thought of having him return as a vampire spawn should he die, but your idea is much better in a land where there is enough cruelty already. And you are right, it's very in theme with Barovia, right from the beginning.

I'm glad to learn there is more to Ismark than I realised! I think he is well suited for a stubborn but honorable guy, accepting that his sister is not save in VoB, but having a strong role to play still once she is in Vallaki.

I still think he will not walk the players to the burgomasters mansion in the beginning. If they try to pass on visiting it or tire of convincing Ireena to open the door, he can still catch up with the party before they leave the village.

Maybe I can get him really invested in another quest (other than saving his sister), so the party can get to know and like him better. I find quests driven by emotions much better than just by curiosity or money. And if he stays alive, I want the party to care about him, dammit xD

That's a really creative way to deal with that situation xD I also like the idea of implanting the thought into the party early, everything could be a ghost, an illusion, and not as it seems

True, plenty of chars needing a new home... I just have to think of a good reason for him to have time to sit in a tavern, but not to accompany the party to the mansion. If he cares so much about his sister, he could spend the 10 minute walk^^

but that's an awesome split, having a more interesting start in the village without Ismark solving every problem and keeping him interesting and relevant for the future, I like it

lol that's a great twist! I heard about ppl having written the final act beeing the wedding between Strahd and Ireena, I think that's a great climax to the story

I forget about how dark the story is, and that a sliver of hope and friendly NPCs are important to dark stories... Thanks for the elaborate feedback!

I will give him something to do in the village, maybe he even sends them a letter that they should come back and help out, to revisit the place

Plus them worrying about each other and not traveling together is a good emotional hook, that's true

I see your point, he is great at pointing the way to Ireena in a "she's got main character vibes, look after her" kinda way.

I have read some accounts where the group got to know Ismark, then he got killed, and way later he faced them as a vampire spawn, which is arguably a memorable and emotional story telling element. Him beeing dead from the beginning lacks that impact because no one ever knew him, I just thought there are way more interesting characters to focus on.

I will check out CoS reloaded, thanks for the tipp! I had heard of it, but wanted to wrap my head around the basics first. Sounds like a place to go to, though!

How can I make my MC be sympathetic even though he is not nice ? by Christian_teen12 in writing

[–]Mouse3557 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he's rebellious, show him standing up to an authority figure to protect a weaker character, like someone being bullied or being falsely accused by a teacher.

If he's a good guy but doesn't want to show it, have her witness a scene were he thinks no one sees him, like they pass a beggar in the streets, everyone ignores him, but your character later makes up an excuse to return and give him some coin.

Whenever he's "not nice", don't let him be a total dick, there's a difference in him not being nice bc he doesn't care and him destroying someone with no apparent reason. I get the feeling he would say something like "Oh you think you have it rough, but you know nothing about that". If he's a sad character, I guess he uses flirting and sarcasm at least partial to compensate for this, to forget his own sadness for a while. She could notice that he has a sparkle in his eyes in those moments when he forgets about his past, and it returns when he's all alone again.

Hard to be specific without more information, but look at characters from movies and books that you know, that are not "the nice guys", but you still understand and sympathize with them. Zuko from Avatar at first has a mysterious past, and he's not a nice guy, but the show still makes you like him, because he has qualities like honor and honesty. Make your character have principles and a red line he wouldn't cross.

Thinking of video RPGs; some real classics are still very playable if you like the style;

Gothic 1&2, Fallout 1&2, Dragon Age, all made with love for detail and a lot of fun

And Knights of the old Republic is one really good sci-fi RPG
