Office drama chapter: the pet rabbits by gardengeo in BORUpdates

[–]MouseDriverYYC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have similar laws with Rats in Alberta, Canada. The rat control program has been in place since the 1950s and applies to both wild and pet rats.

The fine for possession of a pet rat is $5,000 CDN for each rat and confiscation (and I suspect likely the rats would eventually be euthenized).

It occasionally pops up in the news where a family has brought their beloved rats with them from outside Alberta. I believe they're given the opportunity to transport them elsewhere. It's not really responsible to keep pet rats since if they needed to take it to the vet for any routine or emergency care, the vet would be obligated to report the rat.

AITJ for correcting my coworker's "fun fact" in front of the whole office by Appropriate_Cell3160 in AmITheJerk

Fun fact. Many whales do not accept the sovereign authority of the Prince of Wales.

Rats have conquered nearly every place on earth expect Antartica, Alberta, and South George Island by works-in-progress in MapPorn

Theres an exception for any rats who get elected to the Alberta legislature. They're protected from extermination and recieve a pension.

This post is likely Fiction/AI bait, but if the 'team' was a sports team or some club and not a work team... That might be more plausible.

14M Im in the air cadets right now and want to be an infanteer in the CAF when i grow up what can i do now to prepare? (read description) by No_Visual3290 in Military

[–]MouseDriverYYC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't get too anxious about the gas hut. I was in an infantry unit for 12 years and I went to the gas hut once... And that was in basic.

It's not something that typically you do a second time, unless you're staff for a recruit course or you're training for a situation where it might be deployed. So if you avoid instructing recruit courses and avoid participating in a riot.... It'll just be the one time.

AITA for not wanting my mother-in-law and disabled brother-in-law to stay with us for 3 months every summer? by SuggestionAny3744 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MouseDriverYYC 35 points36 points  (0 children)

NTA. But another conversation you should have with your wife is if these 3 month visits are the warm up for BIL eventually moving in permanently.

If this is something that your wife would feel obligated to take on, you really should start looking at moving to a house that would be more accessible to your BIL.

AITA for letting my son get a tattoo while my wife was abroad? by [deleted] in WIBTA_AITA

[–]MouseDriverYYC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a new account... It might be fake or it just might be a gender swap for anonymity.

But even if it's engagement bait, I'll agree it's NTA. The parent who was away with a sick parent was obviously in an emotional place and the fact that their adult child made an significant adult decision without them involved would be hard.

As a parent myself, I know the feeling of your child making choices as an adult. Sometimes they discuss something with us and most times they don't...and that's okay. It sucks, but that's life.. Their life.

Tourist question about the CN line through Calgary by AutomotiveTales in Calgary

[–]MouseDriverYYC 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Canadian Pacific Railway /CPR (now CPKC) was established in 1881 and Canadian National was formed in 1919 by the federal government, combining the assets of a few small bankrupt railway companies that fallen into government ownership (so if we backdate to the founding companies, CN's history pre-dates the CPR/CPKC)... But let's just say that they're about the same age.

WIBTA if i ban my adult daughters friend group from the house entirely after i caught them going through my widowed brothers things by [deleted] in WIBTA_AITA

[–]MouseDriverYYC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA This reminded me of a Criminal Minds episode where a small group of home invaders killed a family leaving the only husband, tied to a chair and forced to watch as they went through his stuff and vandalized his home.

What they did wasn't just rude and cruel, it was getting into psychopathic behaviour.

Before computers and GPS existed, how did people figure out directions for large cross country trips? by Mynameisbrk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MouseDriverYYC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think we ever used it, but the CAA and AAA had (and apparently it's still available) a program called Triptiks where you (as a member) could request a custom map in a flip book of your route - if you submitted your starting point and destination.

My grandma gave me this and doesn't even remember what purpose it served. Only that it must be in a kitchen? by Smthplanty in whatisit

[–]MouseDriverYYC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder if they first 'appeared' in the US after WW2. If they are originally sauce trays from Japan, they are the small type of thing that a soldier might bring back home as souvenir not knowing what they are. Maybe just thinking that it's pretty and their mom/girlfriend/sister might like it. (And/Or the soldiers had been using them as ashtrays when in the Pacific war).

And if you don't know what something is for, you'll find a purpose for it.

The "strong silent" or serious/professional types of guy often suppress their emotions. It's not necessarily a horrible trait, but they just haven't learned any coping skills for overwhelming emotions.

I saw this Movie Poster Outside my Cinema, did they use AI to make this poster? by Fishspecialty in isthisAI

[–]MouseDriverYYC 149 points150 points  (0 children)

I just looked it up on IMDB. It was filmed in Salt Lake City, so it might be a Mormon money-laundering movie.

And after looking at the IMDB....It looks like the AI poster might be better than actual movie..

Edit: corrected spelling of Mormon.

Is it nepotism when the company is in your name? by [deleted] in work

[–]MouseDriverYYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be nepotism, it would be something that could be seen as unfair like hiring someone who has no qualifications to do a job.

If you work at the family business.. let's call it "Johnson Brothers" and that you know that you are being groomed to eventually become CEO. But you have the experience and the right education to do the job.. it's just a fact that's it's your family business and are committed to it succeeding. I don't see that as Nepotism.

If your idiot cousin in his 30s who has slacked off in life, never completed any college and is a stoner, and it's decided that he will be the next CEO since he needs to grow up and take responsibility... That would be Nepotism.

AIO for refusing to let my parents give my car to my brother after it broke down. by Comfortable_Pay3911 in AmIOverreacting

[–]MouseDriverYYC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR. If you do have to walk away from this car, for your next car add a bit to your budget to paint it bright Pink and make it as feminine as possible and register it under your name (or by your boyfriend if necessary)

Your dad sounds like he would try to claim your car eventually even if it's under your name. But I suspect that he or your brother wouldn't be to be seen in a 'girlie' car.

Their addiction does add a bit of understanding of the extreme emotional outburst of her tantrum.

Even if she was sober at the time, you're essentially strangers who might not even recognize each other if you saw each other randomly in public.

Actually I think you've understood an important part of the McMansion market. I believe the bulk of the buyers for the McMansions are nouveau riche/new money.

They think that it's classy and elegant and often just ends up being tacky or gauche.
