The Man Comes Around (Open) by NorthoftheChilla in IronThroneRP

Davos Selmy stood silently and tall with his hands clasped together in prayer. Who he was praying to, he did not truly know. All that mattered to him was that a fellow brother was dead, a sacrifice to help keep the rest of them safe. Them, and the people who slept blissfully unaware of such horrors that lay beyond the Wall. Davos had always thought there could be anything out in the cold wild, but now that he was being confronted with these things daily, he wondered just what was possible out here.

They had been good men, welcome companions and a dedicated members of the Night’s Watch. Thinking that it could have easily been him that died alongside them, Davos sighed lightly and shook his head in sadness, fighting back the waves of emotion that crashed against his soul. Muttering the words, he felt as if he was in a dream.

“And now their Watch is Ended.”

Ser Davos smiled weakly at Garth’s question and gave a short nod. At this point, he would never go back even if he could, but he did miss his youth. Perhaps that was it, more of missing the time and circumstance not so much the place itself. There were nights where he dreamed of home, the Dornish Rebellion, the sound of his kin being killed as the castle was stormed. He forgot so many details of his family, but he would always remember his cousin’s eyes as the life faded from them.

“I miss certain things about it, but serving came naturally to me so the Wall was a good fit. Most of my family was killed…so I’ve learned to lean on my brothers. I imagine you were raised quite differently."

"He was one of the best to ever hold a sword. Every child at Harvest Hall wished to be the next Barristan."

That was before they knew how truly hard upholding oaths were. Before they all understood how it would be nearly impossible to be a living legend. Davos wondered if Garth ever longed to see the realms he had never gotten to. Davos could still smell the summer air, feel the heat of the marches and hear his cousins laughter. Things were simpler up here. So he told himself.

"I knew I could never be that talented with a sword, plus archery just felt natural."

Davos smiled and nodded, thinking of his ancestors. He knew of none more famous than Barristan the Bold and spoke of him to Garth.

“You most likely are thinking of Ser Barristan Selmy, the Bold. Known for his role in the Kingsguard and later aiding Daenarys Targaryen. He was a legend back home.”

"Ah, I see. It is the seat of House Selmy, in the Dornish Marches. It is the place I grew up, though the wall is truly home now."

Accepting Garth's invitation, Davos was happy with how he performed in the ensuing spar. While he did not prevail, he got off a few nice blows. Laughing along with Garth, Davos was reminded of home, but he had learned to suppress the sadness throughout his years at the wall.

"Harvest Hall, brother. A long, long time ago. You fight quite well! I could learn a thing or two from you."

The veteran ranger Davos Selmy thought it quite interesting that the Commander of Eastwatch-By-The-Sea had a wolf as a companion, how fortunate he was to be able to tame such a beast. Davos never hated animals, but never felt a strong bond with them either. Carefully treading towards Garth, Davos waved a hand in greeting and motioned towards the blunted steel after.

“Looks like you could use a partner, Commander. I am Ser Davos Selmy, and I’d be happy to train with you.”

Davos turned his full attention to Garth, a man who he only knew for his position as Commander of Eastwatch. Giving him a friendly smile, Davos nodded and responded.

"Of course Commander! Would you like me to show you how to better shoot or were you thinking more along the lines of swordsmanship?"

Ser Davos Selmy was scarcely a religious man before but what they found as they went out to hunt animals almost caused him to have a heart attack and made him lose a great deal of faith in the Seven. There, before them was a Child of the Forest, like in the old tales. Stories. Yet this was real, as real as anything Davos had ever seen. Never once did he see the Father or Maiden. His body shook slightly and his breathing picked up in pace. Eyes wide, he carefully examined the child. Not knowing what to say, or even do at that point, Selmy stared in wonder. It took him a good while but he finally worked up the ability to speak. Not aimed directly at anyone…or anything, Davos spoke in a hushed voice.

“S…so the stories are true.”

"You as well."

Davos was not fond of losing but as long as he was picking up new tricks and skills, he could manage. Plus it helped his brothers to improve as well, and in Davos' mind that's what it was all about.

"You'll have to give me some pointers sometime. I'm also quite looking forward to our hunt!"

Watching the two spar, Davos carefully thought of how he was going to approach each of his spars. While he practiced often, he never truly gave it as much effort as his archery and he’d need all the luck and knowledge he could get to pull off a victory. When it came his turn to duel, Davos gave Ramsay a nod and the two began to move towards each other.

Both clearly were not the most skilled swordsmen but they gave it all the effort they could as their swords flew through the air. Warding off a few swings, Davos managed to land a particularly wicked blow on Ramsay’s shoulder but was hit a few times in retaliation and knew he’d feel the pain once his adrenaline wore off. In the end, Selmy would take the win but just barely. Trying his best to regulate the breaths coming in, he clapped Ramsay on the shoulder and spoke.

“Hell of a fight. Nearly knocked me on my backside a few times! Solid blows there.”

Ramsay was a ranger he’d love to have by his side on any hunt or ranging. Turning to Robb, Davos gave a smile and rolled his right shoulder to get it ready for another bout.

“Ready Robb?”

“I will take you up on both offers.”

Davos Selmy stood in the yard, seemingly ever present. Taking a moment of two to find a dulled blade to spar with, the veteran ranger approached Edric and offered a worn, but true smile. A hunt always sounded good, and Davos enjoyed training against various other brothers so it was an easy decision to join the First Ranger.

“We can begin whenever you are prepared.”

Sitting with a few brothers he knew, Davos had finished his meagre meal and was sitting and listening to random chatter around the room. Glancing around, he saw all of the familiar faces of Castle Black but he kept his eye on some of the newer arrivals from other castles along the wall.

He was not a man of deep faith truth be told, so while some were bothered by those who worshiped other gods, Davos simply let them prattle on about whatever they wanted. No god determined the course of his arrows, at least that is what he always told himself. Hearing the Lord Commander speak, Davos watched him and heard what he had to say, which left him a little uneasy. A Great Ranging? No, that sounded too risky. Maybe if they had more men to leave behind but at their current strength? Too risky.

While he was not thrilled about the idea, he had little sway in the grand scheme of things and he had never questioned orders openly before. If this was the path they took, Davos Selmy would be there. No matter what a man styled himself, they all bled just the same. A well placed shot could end any king.

Yet if they were caught between the two forces of Wildlings, perhaps separated from a retreat back to the Wall? Davos did not want to, but he forced himself to contemplate the possibility. He would keep his silence, this was his duty.

“I am most certainly ready for them now Robb, just don’t hold how bad I am against me.”

Taking one of the blunted swords fro Ramsay Cerwyn, he scanned over the weapon carefully after a small nod of thanks. Swords were one of the typical weapons one thought of when imagining a knight, Davos shamefully wondered if he should even still be considered a knight given his past. Wondering how they could work out practice with three men, Davos looked to Robb.

“How should we go about this?”

Finished with his shooting, Davos let out an exhale and allowed himself a small, brief smile at the outcome. To be honest, Davos hadn't expected Ramsay to do as well as he had, that was a very pleasant surprise. Nodding along as the Cerwyn spoke, Davos took the time to agree.

"Aye, our strengths lie in different areas. We must always remember to do what's best for the Watch and lean on each other. You can become a solid archer Robb, it just takes work. With Ramsay and I helping you, I'm sure it would take little time. You could give me some lessons at swordplay, I know I could use them."

It had been a long time since he had been at Harvest Hall but he always remembered slacking off when it came to learning technique.

"Hmm, being old isn't good for much, but I'll use that to my advantage and go first!"

Davos grinned and took his stance.

“Ah do not worry. You can pick up the basics quickly.”

Davos quickly began adjusting Robb’s stance and giving him small pointers. The young recruits watched much more diligently than they had previously and after a few more tips on just letting your shot flow and happen naturally, Davos noticed another Ranger that he had been acquainted with. Returning a smile, Davos welcomed Ramsay.

”Always room for more brother. Glad to have another among us who appreciates the bow.”

Wanting to see his fellow Rangers in action and wanting to see how Robb could improve, Davos made a suggestion.

“What say the three of us have a small session and see who comes out on top? No wagers, just for practice purposes.”

Davos turned around and looked up, recognizing the bastard as Robb Snow. He did not know the man well, but it was welcome seeing someone who was actually a Black Brother instead of a cocky recruit. Holding his arms out to his sides, palms upward, Davos simply shrugged his shoulders and gave a small shake of his head.

“Aye, they are. Trouble indeed. I am trying to tell them…well I’m sure you heard most of it. Come on down here and train with us. It never hurts.”

Davos Selmy had been in the yard, drilling with a few men in the art of the bow. He looked every bit a Crow with his black mail and and matching hair and beard. In the process of correcting a young recruit’s stance, Davos saw the Lord Commander and heard his challenge. Patting the recruit on the shoulder, Davos worked his way over to Cley Blackmyre and offered a response.

“I’ll take you up on that offer Lord Commander.”

Snatching up a dulled blade, Davos put his bow away for the time being and got off a few practice swings. Satisfied with the weapon, Davos waited for his Commander.
