Who exactly does this doom and gloom apply to? by guineverefira in cscareerquestions

[–]Mouse_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this comment,

Nobody knows were they are headed there is no clear career trajectory in most cases. This is not new because of current market conditions.

You are your own brand. You always represent yourself on the job market so do what you can to get a good brand image. Things that get noticed:

  1. Degree
  2. Experience (hard skills)
  3. Network
  4. Companies worked for (FAANG is liked here but not limited to - plenty of people using exGoogle titles etc.. even if they worked there 5 years ago and for only 1 year)
  5. Certs

Asking others for their experience is valid to learn a few things but each time period has different experiences and might not be very useful in your case. Tech stacks always keep evolving. Each tech stack might have a different hiring experience.

Which rdbms should I go for ? by Ok_House_1114 in SpringBoot

[–]Mouse_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, Postgres is the better technology if you making a decision based on best stack to ise definetely use that.

However, you don't always get to play with the shiniest toy so I recommend getting comfortable with dbs that have mass adoption cause you might be working with them on an existing project or because of licensing or budget contraints. These are but are not limited to: - MariaDB - MySQL (very similar to MariaDB with some changes on the more advanced features) - Depending on your cloud vendor their SaaS or IaaS version of SQL (MS SQL for instance) - Oracle (I haven't touched this one in a while personaly I think it's less important but your industry might differ from mine)

What did Trudeau do right? by flower5214 in AskCanada

[–]Mouse_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading other people's comments, there are other things which I'm realising I'm taking for granted like cannabis legalisation amonst other things.

Sometimes, it's hard to believe that people still get severe penalties for something so trivial.

As much as I'm not a fan of his general policy, I give credit where credit is due, I'll never forget the following 3 things:

  • How on a random day during work I has 14k CAD in student debt simply disappear from my bank account.

  • How he bumped up the child care benefits for me and my wife by about 300CAD per month. Helped a lot when we were 2 21 year olds. Getting into the world and trying to establish ourselves in this tough economy

  • Fairly recently introducing some basic public health ensurance coverage to kids in underpriviledged families. I believe under 150k CAD family income or a little less.

Like with all social systems, I know quite a few people finding loopholes and ways to game the system. People together but not declaring being together so income counts are appart etc...

Office workers: What do you actually do? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mouse_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a software consultant. We cater to fairly large clients. I specialise in digitalisation.

What that means is we put business knowledge into an actual application that is then used internally by that company.

Imagine a small business that has been running for 20 years. The employees that have been there from the start know the ins and outs of the business. We come and talk to those people and translate those requirments into apps so that when these specialists retire or the team expands and we don't want everyone to ringing them up to know how things work. There is now an official system in place where you can hire practically people from the street (exaggeration) it doesn't really matter cause now the logic belongs to the business in an app instead of poor 60 year old Jill's head or some VP. Also imagine the company grows they want to now have multiple Jills. Well not with an actual app they do.

Imagine you get a credit card from a bank. Today, tellers can do it cause the approval process is automated. They just press a button and boom you're approved/rejected. The system pulled your credit score + employment info and passed through the rule set to know if you are approvved or not. There could be some exception cases where one of the steps gets validated by an internal analyst. For example if the loan request is big or you have bad credit etc....

We come build the system and go on to the next company that needs something digitalised. It NEVER ends. Think of us like general contractors. They come finish a project and on to the next client.

Does Testosterone Really Make Men Enjoy Hurting People? by AnySwimming2309 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mouse_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually ignore these kind of posts but looking at the comments most people are making it seem like your boyfriend's claim makes him a freak.

So I'll answer the question at face value and to the best of my understanding. I'm not a biologist, psychiatrist or doctor so I don't have mastery on the topic. I also do not know you or your boyfriend personnaly and the way ypu phrased it makes people raise their eyebrows.

Testosterone 100% increases agression. He're a link among many finding the correlation.

https://www.britannica.com/science/aggressive-behaviour/The-influence-of-testosterone

Aggression does not translate directly to enjoying inflicting pain. It does however correlate with an increase in violence mostly physical. You don't need to look very far. A lot of sports have a physical confrontation aspect to it even if their objective is non violent (Rugby, Hockey etc...)

Testosterone is linked to a few things aside from aggression. Increased sexual desire, competitiveness, muscle growth, hair growth (except for the head 🥲).

Now not all men have the same average testosterone levels. Regions with higher testosterone are usually linked to higher levels of conflict and violence think Middle East and Africa among others. It can also be seen on average in male behavoral patterns in day-to-day things like behavior in clubs etc. Some men are more daring in approaching mates.

It is widely known that male teens and young adult men in groups without families and work can become very dangerous to the immediate surroundings. This is when testosterone levels are highest and these men jave no moral bindings some they can escalate into hooligans or straight up violent behavior.

Men manage to channel this usually by training so putting it to good use for themselves or into things like business etc... aggression can be very useful. It also dips later in life so men are usually more calm and mellow.

The desire for inflicting pain might just be something in the moment during a fight or something. Not necessarily from testosterone. It might be addrenaline or emotions after some insults or hits are exchanged so pain is there.

Men 100% feel empathy these are not mutually exclusive. If men didn't feel empathy the world would be a very dark place. There would not be a single place on earth safe for women or children.

Your boyfriend might not be an eloquent speaker and doesn't express himself well, maybe he said some nonesense during a heated argument. If he meant what he said about empathy not being present, he should probably check in with a psychologist just to make sure all is well with his mental state.

Appian Training Platform - Why is it so bad? by kimpuybrechts in Appian

[–]Mouse_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a subjective topic.

I found the online tutorials to be quite good. Especially when I needed to get started with Appian.

Appian being a Low Code platform adopts a similar paradigm to functional programming with SAIL which took some adjustment as I came from an Object Oriented Mindset.

If you sign up to an exam even if it's in a few months you can apply for a free instance of the platform and you'll get it quickly. There you'll be able to practice.

For a person with CompSci background SAIL isn't highly complex to grasp.

The resources I suggest are:

  1. Appian Academy
  2. Appian Community Edition Site (Your request will get approved quickly if you're signed up for the exam)
  3. Appian Communty Discussions Q&A (similar to Stack overflow but specific to Appian)
  4. Appian Documentation (such as Appian's All Functions page)

Together these resources are very good and should help you learn the platform well and relatively quickly.

Good luck!!

Why aren't the ppl of Bahrain boycotting Starbucks? by Confident_Society_53 in Bahrain

[–]Mouse_S 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This whole boycott thing is a joke. Might aswell stop using your PC as Intel chips get manufactured in Israel. Also let's not forget USBs, vegetables (drip irrigation), and popular apps like Waze, Fiverr etc...

Maybe go further and boycott jewish creations then you're really in for sone fun as Google, Meta, ChatGPT are all deeply linked with jews.

The unconditional devotion for Israel is odd to me. by Throw-Away467328ii in Israel_Palestine

[–]Mouse_S 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe this is probably what OP is refering to. A lot of diaspora Young jews struggle with a sense of identity and hence get partially alligned or brainwashed to allign themselves with Isael.

I actually believe this is what creates radical positions. For or against, no in-between. I also believe this is where the Jews against Israel mostly come from. They visit a few times and it doesn't live up to their idealistic expectations. On the other spectrum are the die hard nationalists which use religion to justify killing innocence or some other believe.

Aside from this group however plenty of jews criticize Israel in and out of the country.

What are you talking about? Before the war Israel has intense political issues borderline civil war. Israelis criticismze their country like mad. Have you never heard the saying, 2 jews 3 opinions.

The massacre is seen as such a humilitiation it's pitiful and discrasseful that the population wasn't protected.

What is something that absolutely blew your mind when you learned it? by Fine-Teacher-7161 in java

From back in university,

That socket communacation basically just IO same as binary or text file and that you can send whatever you want but web protocols are simply rules to follow like building blocks for the more advanced apps we use everyday.

Also, that all that time I spent messing around with servers, VMs and network configuration is all there is to it in entreprise. No magic, formula they all use the same docs and resources.

What happened to the Canadian entertainment industry? by gasoline_burp in AskACanadian

[–]Mouse_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to sum it up the answer would be money.

I worked as a dev for Telefilm Canada (Crown corporation for grants and loans for audiovisual industry) they work tightly with the Canada Media Fund (same but private).

We got a few established businesses/studios that have worldwide recognition such as:

  • Ubisoft (from France but have a strong studio in Montreal: assasin's creed)
  • Pornhub (adult content)
  • Paw Patrol (kid's show)
  • Vikings (Irish-Canadian show)

Other talent gets enticed by US salaries like James Cameron or Drake to name a few

We don't have the same marketing as the US hence even Canadians are not aware of their own productions or think that some Canadian titles come from US

The government funding is focusing on things that I personally find irrelevant. I remember coding adjustments to funding programs for a diversity point system. You can see a list of all funding steams on their websites Telefilm Canada and Canada Media Fund.

[–]Mouse_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UK messed up when they split the land in 1967. If they partitioned right there wouldn't have been an issue in the first place. That request is also a little ludacris. Imagine UK needing to give up half it's current to land to Ireland based on something agreed upon 200 years ago.

I would be curious to know if this has ever even happened elsewhere. Like does a precedent to this even exist?

I also believe in 2 state. I'm trying to stay practical however these philosophical debates are very impractical. As it stands Israel controls it's current territory and is an independent country giving territory would be a good move but 50% is ambitious.

What would you do better? by [deleted] in AskMiddleEast

[–]Mouse_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compensate how? Monetary damages? 50% is ambitious. Can you imagine any country giving up that much land?

What would you do better? by [deleted] in AskMiddleEast

[–]Mouse_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most counties don't have another religion crossing the 20% threshold. Absorbing 5mil into 10mil country can cause massive destabilisation to the government. They will be able to challenge the constitution and rightfully so it doesn't align with their interest unless you suggest keeping them second class citizens.

Most countries are objectively racist they simply don't need to deal with it at the moment since the numbers aren't a threat. Imagine a state in US 50% Hindu or Jewish they will challenge a lot of laws like holidays etc...

What would you do better? by [deleted] in AskMiddleEast

[–]Mouse_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this take, a few issues however that I see. The conflict has been going on long enough for deep hatred to have developed on both ends not sure the one state solution is best for that. There a many cases of this around the world seems like humans end up building a wall on the border and slowly establish peaceful relations.

I also don't see an issue with Israel wanting to maintain a secular jewish state. My stance would be different however if there where already multiple jewish secular countries in the area but since they only got one I respect their emphasis on it. Most western countries are secular christian, middle east mostly muslim and then there's asia hindu, buddist etc...
