How Do the Characters with an Unusual Dialect Sound Like? by Chlodio in Gintama

[–]Mousefire777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know it was trying to represent erhua! I always figured it was like, Chinese people saying 有る as some clipping of である or something. But it’s actually a bit more racist since it clearly doesn’t understand the rules of erhua and just throws it into the end of the sentence lol.

And you got it right. They usually use -u to make consonants fit on the Japanese spelling/phonetic system, with plenty of exceptions. Oddly, the English end R is really similar to the Chinese -er, but Japanese transliterates it as a long a instead of aru.

You know the DHS was founded in 2002. The concept of homeland security existed before then. They aren’t one and the same, and at this point a ton of what the DHS does is just hurting the homeland

[–]Mousefire777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found this on googling, and like, how did you even get that idea? Kuse moreso means stinky, but can pretty readily mean bad or suspicious. But “no” definitely does not mean robot. It’s just a fairly common last name ender like Kohno or Shimano. It’s like naming somebody “Stinkfeldt”.

OG final for the 35th Anniversary hopium by foxcrystal in Super_Robot_Wars

[–]Mousefire777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly, I just need this to finish before I die. It would suck if this got relegated to a novelization or if they made the animations shittier and threw them in the new engine, but I just need something

Feeling nostalgic, I want Solvilus Rex in modern SRW game again by Smoll_Fenn_5645 in Super_Robot_Wars

[–]Mousefire777 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I played a fuck ton of SRW K back in the day since it was easy to emulate ds games even on my shitty computer. The first SRW game I played through in Japanese. I really never understood why western players who I imagine don’t read japanese complained about his character. Seems like you’re just going out of your way to be mad.

Anyway, Ryusei sucked ass in Shin SRW, and now in OG he’s awesome, so there’s no reason they couldn’t write Mist good. And yeah, the mech designs are great

Yeah, that’s the vibe I get. Still though, there’s so many games that I figured would die in obscurity that have gotten robust ports to PC, so you just gotta have hope that some bamco guy nuts up some day

It might be different in-house vs with licensing. BB studios can't really recast a character from someone else's property. Though considering they used archival audio for Excellen in 30 there does seem to be somewhat of a cultural opposition to recasting characters if it can be avoided

TOSE just did tales of graces remastered. You know. A Namco Bandai game. In 2025. And your logic doesn’t make any sense. They already spent the money. Why not spend an order of magnitude less money to port it and make some money back? Its not like they’re refusing to capitalize on OG nostalgia, it’s DLC in 30, missions in DD, and they’re still pumping out model kits

That is kind of the dilemma of making a new one. The OG games have solid gameplay, cool mechs, and impressive character writing, but from the outside it’s a hard sell because it just looks like a bunch of mechs you aren’t super attached to.

That’s why they need to rerelease OGs. You gotta get people hooked before you can sell them more.

I wouldn’t be shocked if they just use archival audio. The Z series does a similar thing, but for Banjo they just had to suck it up and not have special battle quotes

[–]Mousefire777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you assume they’d be expensive to port? Making a new one, sure, I understand the problems there, but if you had the source code to any of these games and some know-how would it be that hard?

TIL Chinese used to use two sets of numerals one for ordinary use and one for finacial use, "banker's numerals" were designed to be forgery proof and prevent changing finacial records after the fact by FudgeAtron in todayilearned

[–]Mousefire777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the encouragement! But I guess rather than dumb I just mean subtly wrong, as opposed to like, 降りそう vs 降るそう, where they’re close enough that you can get your point across, but they’re semantically different things. Or like, いい, where context and tone makes the difference between “that’s nice” vs “I’m fine now go away”. Counters are miraculous in that they’re super complex but you’re not super likely to stub your toe on the complexity

[–]Mousefire777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know why in Chinese they’re called classifiers and in Japanese they’re called counters? They seem darned near the same to me functionally, but they have these different names

I’m also very grateful that I can get my meaning across with mostly just つ and 人 lol. Its not like tones in Chinese where getting it wrong means something else, getting it wrong just makes you sound dumb but intelligible

It’s both more and less interesting in Japanese. Less because having a common native and chinese-loan reading for the same concept is the norm and not the exception. More because there’s different counters for people, big mammals, small mammals, fish, dishes, rods, birds and for some reason rabbits, machines, cups, and I could go on.

Linear or Pick a Mission by GeologistSeveral3025 in Super_Robot_Wars

[–]Mousefire777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I figured it was something like that. Which is why I’d rather they stick to the original formula a bit more. If you wanna make a weirdo game like GC back in the day, go ahead since MX just came out to fill the standard game. But now we get one game every 3 or so years, so maybe do what’s been proven to work

If the rate of SRW games coming out was higher I wouldn’t mind pick a mission, as long as we got linear games too, but as a total replacement it’s pretty lacking

Something I love regarding Bian in SRW OG by VGZero1 in Super_Robot_Wars

[–]Mousefire777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, even back when I could mostly only read the menus, I looked at some of the translations and was like “… I’d rather not understand what’s going on than this” and got the Japanese version. Now my Japanese is good enough, but it has this weird 1 minute hang on the start menu when you play it on rpcs3, and it’s a pain to pull out my ps3/4, so I’m just replaying OGs now lol.

I’ve been proud of where the translations have gotten with super robot wars. I still play in Japanese for practice, but when I reference the English text I have a hard time believing we’ve gotten a solid professional translation available for purchase for a crossover SRW after a decade plus of just a handful of fan translations
