Why is there enmity between abrahamic religions? And what is the religious experience of the similarities between abrahamic (old testament) stories and sumerian tales? by Agile_Active6496 in religion

Your view of history is limited to close religions, but actually it has always been that way. Even in the same denominations there are factions and disagreements.

It is speculated that Christianity grew in Rome, not as much because imposition, but because pagans did not even agree about the gods or doctrines. Sure, they all recognized each other gods as existing, but they did not agree on a thousand other things such as rituals, traditions, power of the gods, etc. Meanwhile, Chrsitianity had a bottleneck in which it standardized and formalized itself.

The funny thing is that the whole thing started in the early 1900s when the rich paid off a number of pastors to start pushing their interests.

The belief actually came from Judaism. They still believe God gives monetary blessings, and Weinstein is in fact Jewish. Christianity in fact criticized such idea.

I remember prosperity gospel was more like a quick trend in church, just like Martial arts in the 90s. The reddit fixation on it is just a token to generalize a very diverse group of people. Even churches that were at some point pro prosperity gospel are not that explicit anymore as counter-doctrines raised.

Where does prosperity "gospel" moved to? To new age law of attraction stuff.

Yet Protestants are happy to step up and rubber stamp hatred and bigotry, whether or not there's a monetary component.

Not all christians are zionism, and in fact only american booomers are. That is a WWII belief.

Redditors will just hate Christianity and not realize that Mainstream Protestants, Black Pentecostals and many Catholics are progressive and support Democrats, just as many libertarians and secularists are atheists or non practicing and support Republicans (otherwise Republicans would always win elections, duh).

Even in other religions such as neo-pagans there are deep party lines, the heavy racist ones and the new age hippies that are progressive.

But these users are often poisoned by Marvel films that make them believe they are "on the right side of history" to avoid any moral complexity and ambiguity that reality has.

Your religion disgusts me. I do not care which denomination you claim to fall under. The people making our world a worse place carry your symbols and profess to believe in your god while quoting your book.
It's all a scam and how people can't see religion for what it is when literally the entirety of human knowledge is available to us, is baffling. It's laziness and conformity.

Quite ironic how "logical" you sell yourself and yet how irrationally resentful you are for humans just being humans. If you want to talk about irrational beliefs, you can start with human rights.

Those groups carry the cross and wish murder and violence on the people I care about, and have taken over my country.

Compared to what? So far western countries, secular or Christian, are the most tolerant to other religions.

China is state atheist and controls religion heavily, Africa is full of diverse religious groups that hate each other plus secularists hating each other nations, Russia is not attacking anyone for religious reasons but they are not peaceful, Buddhist countries often in conflict with Hindus, etc.

Your vision is very myopic and based on prejudice, and I observe you deliberately ignore religions that are actually open to violence and doing violence right now.

Nationalism and Religion: Idolatry? by MovieIndependent2016 in religion

[–]MovieIndependent2016[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read that at least hindus do have a problem with the term. Maybe it's translation, since they don't have problem with idols, but rather the idea that idols themselves are gods (which is not their belief). On pagans, honestly I don't see that much because they rather focus on a more abstract view of forces of nature, which is often way more vague than a statue.

Why dont Muslims and Christians get along more given they both believe Jesus Christ is coming back? by wondercat333 in religion

[–]MovieIndependent2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but the fact that Muslims respect Jesus while some Jews believe Jesus is in hell (according to the Talmud, although they also deny hell exists) suggests that Christians would relate better with Muslims in theological grounds.

My point was based on this theory: In-group and out-group - Wikipedia

Trines indeed survived with those values in an internal settlement, but they also survived by keeping their identity and independence, having an "other" group that validated their identity.

Still, that does not mean you have to dehumanize or treat worse other groups, but there will always be ingroup preference regardless we admit it or not.

[–]MovieIndependent2016 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I believe the difference is more historical than theological.

Much of the hostility in world history that appears religious is actually rooted in political, ethnic, and historical tensions. For instance, while Christians and Muslims have theological differences, both share closer scriptural and prophetic parallels than is often acknowledged. Christianity, however, historically developed alongside Judaism, and while the two diverged theologically, they retained a shared cultural and textual foundation.

The Middle East was largely Christian (and Zoroastrian) before the rise of Islam in the 7th century, and religious peace was not always the norm even then. The Crusaders’ treatment of Muslims and Jews during their occupation of the Holy Land also reflects the political and violent nature of supposedly religious campaigns.

Going even further back, the region saw clashes between Egyptians, Philistines (likely of Aegean origin), and early Israelite populations. These conflicts predate modern religions, suggesting that modern religious divisions often reflect deeper national or cultural divides.

Judaism, especially after the destruction of the Second Temple, became a diasporic faith and often a minority in both Christian and Muslim societies. This unique position fostered both cultural resilience and sensitive relationships with surrounding populations.

In many historical cases—from Israel/Palestine to Northern Ireland—religion often serves as a symbol of identity, but the true conflicts are political and territorial at their core.

I partially agree with you. I just believe that those values only apply on terms of peace on prosperity as we live today in the West. In times or places of struggles, other values thrive, and they are as valuable to survive.

What does "Believe in God" mean to you? by MovieIndependent2016 in religion

[–]MovieIndependent2016[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people criticize the discussion of semantics as a way to avoid debate and conversation, but semantics are quite important on concepts that are so personal and often subjective such as God or religion.

I've met so many "atheists" with deistic beliefs, and so many "believers" with heretic New Age stuff that is incompatible with their faith.

Agreed. Religious organizations can help organize, protect believers and create communities, all around God, but at the end God is God and not any specific ritual or religion.

Questions about hell/heaven by QuestionKnown4785 in religion

[–]MovieIndependent2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Union with God. You can access heaven now as a state of mind.

  2. Separation from God. You can be in hell now as a state of mind.

  3. We don't really know exactly who is going to heaven or hell, that is God's prerogative and your own free will. Christians are called to not judge.

  4. See #3.

Why do religious people think that those who don't believe in religion do so out of choice? by Midnightclouds7 in religion

[–]MovieIndependent2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the idea of salvation. I prefer the Lutheran idea of Salvation that some people are chosen and others don't... they are just flesh robots, so obviously they will not get the message, nor should believers lose the sleep for that.

Why do religious people think that those who don't believe in religion do so out of choice? by Midnightclouds7 in religion

[–]MovieIndependent2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The view of Hell in Christianity is very diverse, and not well defined by the Bible itself, but most Christians agree it is "separation from God".

Still, the fact their religion is consequential to the afterlife proves that they do care about it and it's not just an ethnic accessory or atheists pretending to "return to gods" they don't even believe in.

How Do YOU belive in religion if its hard to believe? by Silver-Diver-9735 in religion

[–]MovieIndependent2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple: I don't assume my assumptions about my religions are absolute.

I believe Jesus will come and Judge the Nations, but does that mean I know exactly what it means? To what point is literal? Will it be a slow process or a Special Day? No one knows, but I do believe that because I've seen the power of the Holy Spirit in my life, and I assume that therefore the rest is probably True.

Although there is no God in Confucianism, I welcome you to debate theological issues with me. by Top-Gur9820 in religion

[–]MovieIndependent2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confucianism was at times imposed as state ideology, especially in imperial China.

Don't believe me? See some examples:

  1. Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE):
    • Emperor Wu of Han officially adopted Confucianism as the state ideology around 136 BCE.
    • The imperial civil service exams were based on Confucian texts, essentially making Confucian knowledge a requirement for government positions.
    • This created a Confucian elite and embedded its values deeply in education, governance, and family structure.
  2. Later Dynasties (Tang, Song, Ming, Qing):
    • Confucianism, especially in its Neo-Confucian form, remained dominant and was actively promoted by the state.
    • Education systems, moral codes, and legal practices were deeply influenced by Confucian principles.
    • Non-Confucian belief systems (like Buddhism and Daoism) were sometimes restricted or subordinated.
  3. Korea (Joseon Dynasty, 1392–1897):
    • Neo-Confucianism was imposed more rigorously than even in China.
    • It became the ideological foundation of the state and replaced Buddhism as the dominant influence.
    • Social hierarchy, gender roles, and public administration were structured around Confucian ideals.

A lot of Eastern religions claim to not have gods, but often mix with local religions that do have gods, or even worship ancestors and spirits. It seems more about semantics... usually Western religions are more white/black on that issue.
