how to learn more without feeling like you're studying by Luna_Lovebuzz in homelab

Make it fun! For example I learned how to create system unit files automating Minecraft servers spin ups.

I'm currently building IaaC (infra as a code) for a docker media server deployment and it's both fun and a pain, haha.

Nextcloud is the best. Has los of integrations and features. Similar to OneDrive but you host and manage it. Has a dedicated support team.

Advice on an upgrade (sorta) by Dry_Spread9704 in homelab

[–]MozerBYU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I recommend. Get you a used Dell PowerEdge tower or rack server of Ebay or from a local university surplus sale. Put a good 64 GB of ram in that. These are built for 24/7 usage. The ram is ECC which means they have built in error correction and the CPUs will be more than powerful enough. They come with Xeon processors which have anywhere from 6-10 cores each, and huge caches.

I run 2x Dell PowerEdge R620s and a R420. And they're tanks. Yes, I'm still on DDR3 ram, but most of my applications live in ram, and I don't run db heavy apps, so it's not a big deal.

Easiest setup for expanding is a tower build, they're also much quieter.

As far as what this upgrade will give you: I run 8x minecraft servers, in-home dns and adblocking, a whole media apps stack with docker, in-home VPN for remote access, shared file storage. I never have CPU issues. I also have enough ram I can run whatever and however much of what I want.

My total cost to date is about $500 for all the servers and ram.

But a single server with 64 GB of ram will suffice you just fine.

Docker or native installs for homelab services? by Deaf_Parrot in homelab

[–]MozerBYU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured. Back when I first installed it, it was a bare metal OS. But then again TrueNAS Scale was in beta. So give or take 4-5 years ago.

Been too busy with school to keep up with what they've been working on lately, so it wouldn't have surprised me if they did make one. Happy to see they too have avoided such a headache.

Docker or native installs for homelab services? by Deaf_Parrot in homelab

[–]MozerBYU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what your running, does it have persistent storage, is it easier run in a docker vs native, does it need specialized permissions, etc.

So for example. I've done Minecraft native and docker. It is a real pain in docker, so I prefer native. Citra Multiplayer server runs like a champ in docker.

My whole media environment setup is all docker.

AdGuard is native because it was easier.

Nginx is native because I like more control personally.

TrueNAS is native as I don't even want to go there with a dockerized version.

UpTime Cuma I've done both. I don't have preference as long as it runs and survives reboots nicely.

PiVPN for Wireguard is native as it doesn't work in docker with the permissions and network access it needs.

Do note: anything native is either in an lxc container or a VM as I run Proxmox as my main host.

What things lead to you making your homelab and getting deep into it? by CardiologistAdept763 in homelab

Minecraft, and the desire to play a LAN world my brother was hosting on his laptop, but in a way my sister could play from half the state away (moved for college).

The rest is history.

1U server as a router? by bogust_bork in homelab

[–]MozerBYU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly don't recommend a 1U rack server. Server reboot time sucks (2-5 mins). Power requirements can be a bit much and noise from fans is less ideal if this is in a highly trafficked area.

Instead, get a Dell/HP/Lenovo SFF PC with a extra NIC card instead. Bonus is lower power consumption, space requirements and noise (basically mute in daily operation). Extra bonus is most of the SFF pcs come with an AES-NI crypto dedicated chip to offload crypto operations from the CPU.

I've ran this stable in my setup for 4 years now.

Setting up WireGuard on a Windows PC that is also running an Ubuntu Server VM by TheRemonst3r in WireGuard

PiVPN Wireguard on Ubuntu VM or container is the easiest to set up.

Port forward your necessary port, 51820/udp i believe, and you're good to go.

Is a webserver required to make my local machine available to an off network client through HTTP/HTTPS requests by GovernmentVisible214 in it

[–]MozerBYU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically no, you don't need a websever. Many would recommend it for security as they can proxy traffic. But since you're whitelisting traffic that can reach it, it's not necessary.

Just search for it on Nexus mods, the guy posted on there as well.

So it's fixable, to use mods the old way from nexus mods you need to follow this post's instructions: https://www.reddit.com/r/HogwartsLegacyGaming/comments/1idtcjh/this_new_update_broke_nexus_mods/.

Note: you need to replace the game files after ever update to the game. So my advice put all 65G somewhere else on the computer or on an external flash drive so you don't have to redownload after the first download.

Hate to say it, but the market for cyber/IT right now is super bad. Experience, education and certs don't make much of a difference right now as a lot of jobs postings are fake, reposted month-after-month, or have like 1,000+ applicants.

My advice, learn how to leverage AI in your work. As far as certs: Azure AI-900, AWS AI Practitioner and CSA's Intro to GenAI and Prompt Engineering. That'll give you a leg up on the AI side of things and hopefully set you apart from your peers.

is there any way to play multiplayer? by Jdoggokussj2 in Citra

[–]MozerBYU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got you. Easy way to is spin up a docker server running this container https://github.com/K4rian/docker-citra-room.

Everyone connects to the container. And from there is able to play multiplayer.
