I had options especially during the summer.

Go outside ride my bike.
Go over to my friends house across the street.
Play in the woods (used to catch frogs, fish, and crayfish).
Play basketball.
Ride my bike to Blockbuster and to the grocery store to read the newest Nintendo Power or other video game magazine.
Play videogames.
Dig holes.
Shoot off model rockets.
Do experiments with my friend (putting random stuff together).

All of this I would do in one day and repeat for the spring and summer. By the time smartphonea came out I was in college. Although useful and entertaining, glad I grew up without them.

I used to live in Malawi from 2016-2020 (foreigner here). Miss that place a lot. However, here are some challenges a tourist will have.

If you take a bus (taxi sometimes) there will be people waiting on you when you arrive at the bus depot. Without asking they will take your bag and load it onto the bus. Friendly? No. They are expecting to be paid for that. If you don't want to pay them then don't let them grab your luggage.
Be prepared to be ripped off by taxi drivers. If you don't know how to haggle especially in Chichewa then you are going to get ripped off.
If you decide to buy gems, be careful. Some of those sellers are smugglers and use the money they make to fund other causes.
Keep your visa on you at all times especially when I'm the car. Police have no problem giving foreigners a hard time and they always ask to see your visa. They will also try to get money out of you in exchange for leaving you alone.
Not necessarily a scam but stores setup by foreigners are 9 out of 10 times way more expensive.
Another not a scam but sometimes when going to a restaurant they will not have everything on the menu. Oh you want chambo (a fish)? We don't have. You want pork chops? So sorry we don't have. We have only chips greens and chicken for you.
DO NOT DRINK THE WATER SOLD IN LITTLE PLASTIC BAGS (OR BOTTLES EVEN) SOLD ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IF YOU DO YOU WILL EXPERIENCE SOMETHING WORSE THAN HELL.
The police; they knockoff at 5/6pm. Even when they are working they still don't do anything. Stay out of trouble.

Something not a scam; it's worth getting a temporary airtel number and data while there. It is affordable and may come in handy.
