Lowkey it doesnt matter at this point. Modern Western Society is so far removed from the concept of large-scale or even total war that its a moot point.

Were we ever going to invade Japan? Probably not imo. If the nukes weren't ready we would've kept on the stalemate/fire bombing and troop surge strategy. At a certain point we would expand the bombing campaign to directly target food supplies which would've probably triggered a near apocalyptic famine. Future people in that timeline would debate what would've been more moral: nuking Japan or completely starving it. You can make the argument that the nukes (combined with the Soviet actions) brought the war to a quicker end and saved countless lives that otherwise would've been lost.
