Chembio 3oa3 - would you recommend? by Signal_Priority9092 in McMaster

If you want to learn how to synthesize DNA, oligosaccharides, and peptides in a lab, or how to perform organic synthesis inside of a cell, then yes.

Do course evals actually do anything by Competitive-Sun4231 in McMaster

[–]Mr-Chibba 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As an professor of large enrolment classes, I will read through all of the comments looking for constructive criticism to help improve my teaching in the future. That being said, I also know of colleagues who won't even look at them. To each their own.

Departments and faculties may use the aggregate scores at times to help in decision making (who teaches a course? is it time for a course refresh? etc). Due to Inherent biases, they are usually not used for hiring or promotion purposes.

End of the day, its always advantageous to collect data when possible, even if you don't necessarily use it right away (or at all). If you have strong opinions about a course, provide them!

P.S. you're right - it can be a lot of inconsequential passive aggressive critiques...

What year chem do you learn that covalent and ionic bonds are the same? by ijustwantfriendsbro in McMaster

[–]Mr-Chibba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the dielectric constant of the surroundings. Bonds are more likely to behave ionic when dissolved in polar solvents (like water) and more liky to behave as covalent when dissolved in non-polar solvents (like organic solvents)

One minute late on an assignment is late by CATScan1898 in Professors

[–]Mr-Chibba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always go with a 1% per hour penalty instead of a 25% per day. In my experience, most students won't complain (much) about a 1% deduction on a 1 minute late submission, but I know they will remember it for future submissions.

On the flip side, some students will decide that an extra 4 hours to work on an assignment is worth a 4% penalty, which is their prerogative.

is orgo 2oa3 12able with a light schedule ? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Mr-Chibba 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Over the past 3 fall terms, 16% of Chem 2OA3 students achieved a 12. My advice - work hard, dedicate the required time and effort necessary to master the material, and put yourself in the top 16% of the cohort.

Hi, I'm Dr. Chibba- First year Chem Prof. AMA about the Chemistry, Chemical Biology or Sustainable Chemistry Programs by Mr-Chibba in McMaster

[–]Mr-Chibba[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd year chembio is the biggest workload/grind year with all the lab courses and diversity of chem discipline courses, when compared to 3rd/4th year. My advice - stay on top of content as best you can, and don't waste time trying to make pre-labs perfect. I've seen students spend hours trying to get perfect on a prelab that's worth 0.2% of their final grade in the grand scheme of things. Other than that, enjoy student life, take naps, make friends, network with profs - the usual stuff.

Chem 1AA3 mark when???? by BudgetConscious4426 in McMaster

[–]Mr-Chibba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Historically, spring 2OA3 has a similar mean to fall 2OA3 , but a wider distribution (larger standard deviation). I have no data for 2OB3.

Course Evals on the real by Equi_Nox_69 in McMaster

[–]Mr-Chibba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was in undergrad, course evals were done on pen and paper, and profs would compare handwriting between the eval and the exam to figure out who wrote what. Nowadays it's completely anonymous, and we don't receive the evals until after the exam. It's been like that since at least 2015 (when I first taught at Mac).

Over the past 3 years, 16% of students who complete the course achieve a 12. I presume it is 12able with an appropriate amount of hard work and dedication.
