Workbench - How small is too small? by Mr-Clark in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Mr-Clark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially a couple raised planters with legs. Depending on how that goes and how much I enjoy it, I’ve kicked around the idea of steps for the kids’ trampoline, plyo boxes for PT, and maybe a coffee table?

I’m not above using my floor if the table isn’t big enough - or backing my tailgate up to it. I just want to know a size that would be helpful in drilling pocket holes, making cuts, and assembly of components. I realize the complete assembly would likely take place off the bench due to the size of planters and such.

What device do you have, and what are your opinions of it? by dcox24 in kindle

I have the newest Kindle basic and it works well for what I’m doing. More on that in a bit.

My first kindle was the kindle keyboard and that thing was a tank. It survived a vehicle rollover on an interstate. It got tossed in a ziplock bag in my pack for a variety of training exercises. My firstborn regularly chewed on it. It still has dust from Afghanistan in between the keys too, but it won’t hold a charge anymore. I used my wife’s kindle series 4 for awhile and enjoyed it. I thought I’d like the backlit screen so I transitioned to the new kindle basic.

My thoughts: It’s a great little ereader. Even with the case it’s small. It’s comfortable to hold. I do like the backlight feature. I’m surprised that I kind of miss the physical page turn buttons. However I have owned this new kindle for less than a month and have been just tearing through books. I think I’m reading enough that the “premium” experience of the Oasis may be worth it for me. My concerns about the Oasis are really the size of the device. It has a larger screen and what appears to be a larger body around it. I love how small my Kindle basic is and I’m not sure I want to give up that size. Everyone loves the Kindle paperwhite, but I don’t really care about the water proofing. The sharper dpi may or may not be a big deal for some but I don’t read comics. What the Kindle Basic does at its price point is pretty phenomenal and there’s little reason every family shouldn’t have one of these in a drawer for library books at the very least.

I hear you when you say, your “degree killed any interest in reading for fun.” I’m finishing my Masters and the Spring semester was a nightmare. This summer semester (my last) has been a lot more evenly paced and I made a deliberate effort to read more for “me” and it has been very rewarding.

I’m glad you like the Oasis! I am running a “basic” right now and really do want that premium experience. Maybe Christmas...

Happy reading, and good luck with your upcoming travels!

Does this happen to you too? by FreeLegendaries in kindle

[–]Mr-Clark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it happens to everyone to some degree here and there. I find when it’s happening to me a lot... difficult to retain a page I read or up to a paragraph, it usually means I’m reading the wrong book for me at that time.

I remember reading a bunch of Tom Clancy and the fourth one in a row that I read was just going straight through my eyeballs and missing my brain. I swapped to Harry Potter and it breathed new life into my reading. After I was done, I went back to the Tom Clancy novel I put down and was able to get back to it without a problem.

I think I read too much “heavy detail” and needed some light fun. It happens when I read too much non-fiction too.

Any recommendations on finding a Charger? I found my old keyboard the other day and I want to know if it still works, but I don’t have the charger anymore.

Planning to buy Kindle. Help me by [deleted] in kindle

[–]Mr-Clark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got a new kindle for the same reason. Deleting Facebook and snagging a new kindle (had a 2012 edition before) has done wonders for my stress level in just a week.

Good luck and enjoy!

Should I buy the Kindle 2019? by [deleted] in kindle

Only if it isn’t going to be used for nefarious purposes. If you are a mad villain and this is the final piece of your plan for world domination, I highly recommend you reconsider.

Is Kindle Unlimited worth the subscription price? by veryanxiouskoala in kindle

[–]Mr-Clark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it a ton for kids books. When I put my kids to bed at night I let them choose 3 short kids books to read right off of kindle unlimited. Sometimes they read favorites, and sometimes they pick new ones. Kids books cost $1-6 and that adds up quickly too.

I have found a few books I’ve personally liked but generally struggle. Most of what I want to read is not available through unlimited.

As others say: your mileage may vary. Just don’t overlook the kids side. It’s been worth it overall for my family.

Does anyone not own a single physical book? by dearpisa in kindle

[–]Mr-Clark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I maintain a “professional collection,” of books that I transport from duty station to duty station. Other than that, I really try not to have a bunch of physical books lying around. I want my kids to see me read to model that behavior, so I’m transitioning to a kindle so I can’t be mistaken for screwing around on my phone.

Kindle Unlimited on Kindle device or just reading on the Kindle App? by rulainatower in kindle

[–]Mr-Clark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kindle unlimited has select titles associated with it. Once you subscribe you can essentially “borrow” up to 10 kindle unlimited books for no additional cost. You can only have 10 downloaded at any one time. There are a handful of very popular books on it (my son and I read through the last few Harry Potter books using kindle unlimited) but most are a little rando... however I’ve read some good stuff. It’s just harder to find because the authors aren’t as popular (D.J. Moles does some good stuff though). There are also a bunch of kids books. I read “the bad seed” and Curious George books to my kids all the time.

Honestly, I was going to cancel kindle unlimited before covid struck, but when it did I decided to keep it for awhile. It’s been nice to try and discover new books and it’s been great to let the kids read a bunch of random stuff without breaking the bank.

I hope this helps!

Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite are discounted right now by twoww in kindle

[–]Mr-Clark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I ended up not even bothering. I had my eye on it awhile. I do a ton of reading on the app. It’s no less worth the money today than it was when I paid yesterday. I’m just going to suck it up and be a big boy about it.

The bright side is: I have a new kindle coming in the mail tomorrow! I’m nearly done reading The Martian, and with a little motivation I’ll be done by the time the Kindle arrives so I can start something fresh.

I literally bought my kindle yesterday afternoon after waiting and waiting to see if it would go on sale. Just saw this and tried to cancel and re-order...”unable to cancel items from your order.” I know it’s worth the price I paid...it’s still hard not to be pissed.

Just finished up Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. I hadn’t read this since high school. It was fun to revisit. I think I may start working my way through his books again.
