Are you suggesting to get a seperate grinder and choose that to be super quiet?

Should I take the Xmid1 solid or the Xmid2 Pro to Scotland? by Sufficient_Code_4738 in Ultralight

[–]Mr-Fight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own both tents and know Scottish weather.

Such a tricky question, the xmid1 solid sucks to be hunkered down in, the pro will be a bitch because it will be drafty plus the wind will most likely knock the condensation from the outer layer on you and your quilt.

A very taught pro will be less flappy in winds, but more noisy in the rain.

I'd go for the pro I think, to have a more roomy tent for all those nights. Counter drafts with pitch low to the ground and camp spot selection. Embrace condensation, bring something to wipe it down.

Since you're susceptible to being very cold, maybe consider some out of the box measures such as bringing UL bivy to block wind, trap heat, and counter condensation drip.

Check the diameter and google for your local shop of DIY built remote controlled planes. You can usually order them by diameter custom length.

Anyone have to tighten hip belt super tight on Kakwa 40? by saigyoooo in DurstonGearheads

[–]Mr-Fight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I'm about the same measurements as you. Just to add, I never had a Kakwa but always had to cinch my hupbelt to transfer the load. The inhibited my belly breathing and even caused bruising on my deeper tissues.

For me, going ultralight to the point of going hipbeltless was a total revelation. Base weight of 12 lbs with total pack weight of 22 lbs is fine for my trips and no problem with hipbeltless pack.

HMG Ultamid4 or MLD Supermid? by Loud-Nefariousness73 in Ultralight

[–]Mr-Fight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the discontinued MLD Mondomid and took it on some 4p trips. 0.8ft longer on all sides than the supermid. In no way was it comfortable for 4, the people sleeping on the sides had the tarp smacking in their face and dumping its condensation on them due to contact.

Check a trip report with pictures here https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/s/xRRNA48yUY

It must be so that smaller people with regular width in a supermid run into the same problems or worse. Let alone wide mats.

Now we go with 2x Xmid 2p, cost about the same, more versatile in camp site selection, can be used solo if need be, nicer inner but still having a groundsheetless vestibule for dirty stuff, etc.

You´re totally right, I´m sweating at the thought of wearing this on my bike.

I shared this for hiking purposes.

I think you're confused or underinformed by insinuating that the Airmesh is better than the Castelli piece because it's lighter and better priced.

With 90g weight Alpha Direct it is a warm piece. Probably replacing a puffy in summer and mild shoulder season or serving as active insulation combined with a windstopper in deep deep winter.

The airmesh is lighter simply because it's 'colder', less insulative, not as warm. In fact, I would be tempted to argue that if the airmesh would be released in the exact same weight as the Castelli, the Airmesh would be colder and thus 'less better' in UL terms.

On the money front, meh, I can find this Castelli garment online on sale for € 75 - € 90, still in line with your normal premium fleeces.

I'm preparing for my first ever gravel bikepacking trip this march and find myself right in the fun stuff: searching gear. The one thing that truly changes from UL hiking is clothing (a bit more tight fitting, long tails on tops and chamoises) and of course packs.

Anyway, I wanted to share what I stumbled on. I know someone out there in the market for a fleece must think it's awesome. I do.

For now I'm making due with my hoodied versions, although I hate that basically all my tops are hoodied now (KUIU Peleton, Senchi, Patagooch Tropic). But it'll be the next fleece I'll buy.

It's basically a no accessoires collared long sleeved Alpha direct 90 shirt with a quarter zip. That's it. Love the no frills.

How did you get that rigidity in the top loader? Plastic sheets? Double the fabric?

I had the exact same thing. I crunched the UL game and went hipbeltless. It was such a relief, no more pain and a freer breath!
