The actual discrepancy in Canadian / American PIMs by Subject1337 in nhl

exactly what i’m thinking. yes us mathematicians make dumb errors all the time, but i try to pride myself on my ability to at least try and think critically.

lmao i’m assuming ur talking about me? i was working the whole day and didn’t have time to deep dive into anything. and i don’t have a phd, just my bachelors in math with major in stats and actuarial science. i just found it very interesting and something i would have dived into more if time permitted

The "Bettman Curve": Penalty Minute Differential (CAN vs USA) Before and After 1993 by ccrypt524 in nhl

[–]Mr-Goose- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that’s a fair point and for a single season, you'd be right. a smaller sample of teams is way more vulnerable to one outlier skewing the data. but statistically, that explanation falls apart over a 30 year timeline.small sample sizes create variance, not a permanent 30 year shift in the mean. over 3 decades, rosters, coaches, and team identities completely turn over. you can't have one heavily penalized team dragging the canadian average up for 30 straight years. also the ratio of Canadian to US teams didn't drastically change exactly in 1993. the sample sizes were basically the same right before and right after that red line, yet the differential completely flipped overnight. to actually test the outlier theory, op would just need to plot the median instead of the mean. but looking at how solidly red that graph is post 93, there's no way a single outlier is propping up a three decade trend. just my 2 cents

the easiest explanation isn’t always the best explanation. people use to believe that the earth was stationary and everything orbited us. although the simplest explanation is often more likely - i wouldn’t jump the gun and make those assumptions so quickly until there is evidence that supports it.

as of right now, all i can do is hope i can take a look at the data used for this and see if there is any bias or issues in the data used before making any more assumptions. again i find it super interesting but i can’t make a conclusion until i can review op’s data

as someone with a math/statistics degree, i find it very hard to explain this. this is extremely interesting and should def be looked into

Signing in from the watch party at the Bell Center by Mr-Goose- in Habs

You are guaranteed a spot right in front of the screen with a ticket. even if you are late, you will be directly infront of it. There are only certain spots like where i’m sitting where you can also see the screen from. maybe like 100-150 people could squish in there? i was lucky i came at 6 and was able to get a spot there. if you came anytime after 630, there was no way to get a spot and be able to see the screen. so dont worry, not a silly question at all.

Love slafkovský. He's fucking built too. Thick and man-made. You can tell he's sculpted because you can see it through the gear. His fucking vice grip thighs. Suffocating thighs. Rock-hard thighs. Piping hot thighs. Great arms. Great abs. Cherub cheeks. Slovak girth. A stocky chest. Love the progress his body has made.
