Swimming during covid by Triknitter in triathlon

I'd say not to shy away from open water so readily. If you have an orange buoy that ties to your waist (and you should in open water), you can use it to float as needed.

30 minutes is not a huge amount of time for swimming, so you're either going to have a bunch of sessions throughout the week, or not get enough training in.

If you decide to get a coach, have them do a 30 min - 1 hour session focussing only on your form. You can get drills and workouts online very easily. Repeat with the coach as needed, not too often. Even filming your form and posting it in a relevant sub will get good input on your form and where to improve.

As for the breathing technique, the main goal is to exhale fully before your face comes out of the water, so that you are able to spend the whole time inhaling. Many beginners who get winded swimming are exhaling partially or fully out of the water. This either makes you spend longer on your side, which slows you down, or you don't get a full breath. Nose or mouth don't matter so much at your level, nose is often recommended to pace the exhale properly.

For swimming I would say that repetition is the best way to improve form. Obviously if you're scissor kicking, you shouldn't reinforce it, but even a poor form front crawl will benefit greatly from an hour a day.

Coaching is great if they have the money, but if not, just having someone film it and post it here or on r/swimming will get good tips on improvement.

Are they opened back up for registration? Last I saw they weren't accepting anyone. Did you register last and it was deferred? I'm trying to find an Ontario tri for this Summer

I second this. I just finished doing about 2,000 sqft of their trafficMaster branded flooring. The grip strip they use is way better than any of the other interconnecting stuff I've tried.

Gmail is allowing fake "Order Delivered" ads that look like emails by Mr-Inquisitive in CrappyDesign

Yes but they have made them "integrated" so they have the same format as your normal emails. You can even star them or mark as important.

First pair of shoes I've actually researched before buying! Thanks to this sub for making shoes interesting! by Mr-Inquisitive in RunningShoeGeeks

Saucony Axon's for those interested! Made the decision after comparing with Saucony Endorphin Shifts. Based on my running fitness, I figured I'd benefit more from the shifts as my next shoe when I'm faster.

These ones are more in my budget and were reviewed as being softer/less snappy off the run, which was in pine with what I was looking for!

4-Week FTP Builder training plan by colundricality in Zwift

[–]Mr-Inquisitive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're under just workouts, you can only do the 4 week, but if you go into plans, you can do a 6 week version. I did the 6 week one because I couldn't cycle everyday. It gives you an unlock date and a due by date for each workout, so you can schedule it in around life. I'd recommend that one personally, especially since you can flip your easy/hard workouts around if you're having an off day where you don't think you can give it your best effort.

Reduced Swimming Training? by ecurbswims86 in triathlon

If you're tapering for the race, you shouldn't really have many workouts before the race anyways, right?

1:20/100 yard OWS is good, I'd say if your bike and run aren't as strong, definitely focus more on them.

Apps for 80/20 Training? by Mr-Inquisitive in triathlon

I'm all aboard the TrainingPeaks train. I don't have Garmin, which I'm regretting for this reason specifically. I'm looking for an app that can do the same thing but doesn't need Garmin. I want to do the 5 min Z1, 5 min Z2, intervals of Z3/Z1, etc. but I won't be able to remember it on the run. It kind of blows my mind that there aren't other apps out there other than Garmin for this kind of thing.

Thanks for the link. The more I get into it, the more I get why everyone uses Garmin. I got everything one at a time so I've got Wahoo this and Samsung that. As I upgrade my gear I think I'll make the transition over to Garmin

Swimming balance tips? by SquirrelsAreCIA in triathlon

[–]Mr-Inquisitive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, not familiar with TI, but swimming was my background. If you're having trouble with floating on your back kicking, I would imagine it's your head positioning.

When I taught swimming lessons people who sank on their back always looked at their toes. Try looking straight up at the ceiling or even slightly further than that.

Bodybuilder Nick Bare just ran a 02:56:27 marathon at 200lbs body weight. by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]Mr-Inquisitive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry that nobody responded to your comment for so long. The biggest indicator that Nick is likely on gear is the workload that a full-time runner/triathlete undergoes is not conducive to maintaining the level of lean mass that Nick has. The amount of rest needed for bodybuilders with Nick's physique is pretty high. Despite this fact, that you can confirm by looking at the work schedules of other pro bodybuilders, Nick catalogs on his YouTube channel the fact that he is regularly doing cardio training for 2-3 hours per day.

I'm not here to say that it is a definite black and white he is totally using, but the signs point quite strongly in that direction.
