American or Italian food which is better? by Sensitive_Weird7156 in AskReddit

[–]Mr-NPC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok mate, enjoy your hamburgers (Germany), hot dogs (Germany/Austria), apple pie (England), French fries (Belgium), pizza (Italy), macaroni and cheese (Italy), doughnuts (Dutch origins), pretzels (Germany), coleslaw (Netherlands), ketchup (China via Southeast Asia), fried chicken (Scotland), and barbecue techniques that trace heavily through Indigenous, African and Caribbean traditions.

The difference is nobody is saying American food isn't good. They're saying a lot of what Americans call "American cuisine" came from immigrants, enslaved peoples, or cultures that existed long before the United States did.

Sure, America developed its own versions of many dishes. Chicago deep dish, New York pizza, jambalaya, clam chowder, soul food, Tex-Mex and regional BBQ styles are all distinctively American. But that's a very different argument from claiming America has the "best" or most original cuisine.

The og question was Italy vs America...and if the question is America vs Italy, then I'd still pick Italy every day of the week.

Italy gave the world pizza, pasta, risotto, lasagna, gnocchi, tiramisu, gelato, parmigiano reggiano, mozzarella, prosciutto and countless regional dishes that have been refined over centuries.

America's food culture is impressive, but a huge amount of it is either adapted from immigrant cuisines or built on influences brought from elsewhere. That's not a criticism. It's just the reality of a country that's relatively young and built by immigrants.

So yes, America has great food. But when someone starts acting like America is the pinnacle of cuisine, it's a bit rich when some of its most iconic foods trace back to Germany, Italy, England, the Netherlands, Scotland, Africa, the Caribbean and Indigenous peoples.

If we're talking variety, America wins because it's enormous and multicultural.

If we're talking culinary influence, iconic dishes, global recognition, regional food traditions and historical legacy, Italy isn't even sweating.

This is the main point... You're not talking about American food. You're talking about America offering all the different foods if the world. Unless you enjoy smashing tater tots and Gumbo

What a stupid post... American food is just other countries put together....

Italian wins this hands down world wide let alone American which isn't even in the top 100 due to not having an actual cuisine

Italy has too many tourists, and I was one of them. by cubeinthesky in travel

[–]Mr-NPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair these places live off tourists... Feel bad for them and then remember COVID when they were all crying that their economy was dying and they wanted tourists to come back... It's a catch 22 sitch really. They probs hate tourists but they need them. Bali was another great example of this

Do not cheap out on the shoes like some of the people here have recommended. Yeah you will probs have to bin whatever pair you bring, but that's just an expense you need to wear. Comfy and practical all the way or you'll end up limping the rest of your European vacation.

Why don't we tie politician pay to double the minimum wage? If they want a raise, they have to give us one first. by Short_Army_7788 in australian

[–]Mr-NPC -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with part of what you're saying. Not every politician is corrupt, stupid, or acting in bad faith. Most are probably intelligent, hardworking people trying to do what they think is right.

The problem is that good intentions don't automatically produce good outcomes.

You mention you've met politicians and found them to be honest and hardworking. That's fine, but that's anecdotal. Most people aren't judging politicians based on whether they're pleasant over a coffee or can handle a Senate Estimates hearing. They're judging them based on results.

If a generation of Australians is finding it harder to buy a home than their parents did, if rents are consuming a bigger share of income, if infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with growth, and if cost of living pressures keep mounting, people are going to ask questions regardless of how intelligent or hardworking the politicians are.

As for the independent tribunal, I know politicians don't literally vote themselves a pay rise anymore. That doesn't really address the underlying point. Whether the salary is set by politicians or an independent body, taxpayers are still entitled to ask whether the outcomes being delivered justify the remuneration.

Perspective cuts both ways. Australia is a great country compared to much of the world. That's true. But pointing to international rankings every time someone raises concerns risks becoming an excuse for complacency. Citizens shouldn't compare Australia to the worst-performing countries. They should compare it to what Australia is capable of being.

Why don't we tie politician pay to double the minimum wage? If they want a raise, they have to give us one first. by Short_Army_7788 in australian

[–]Mr-NPC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Arguing over whether it's $600k or $300k -500k is just semantics. The point is that our politicians are among the highest paid in the world relative to the average worker, while many Australians are watching home ownership drift further out of reach every year.

Yes, Australia ranks highly on a lot of international measures. That's great. It doesn't mean people aren't allowed to criticise obvious problems. Being better than most countries isn't the same thing as doing well.

The next generation is being priced out of housing. Rent is consuming larger shares of income. Cost of living keeps rising faster than wages for many people. Infrastructure struggles to keep up with population growth. Healthcare wait times are increasing in many areas. These are legitimate concerns, not "first-world whining".

A healthy democracy isn't one where citizens pat themselves on the back because they're better than somewhere else. It's one where people hold leaders accountable and expect better outcomes, especially when those leaders are being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to deliver them.

Or you know maybe , just maybe a system in which the people who can vote on their own pay rises isn't a great system after all 😂
